Adding RAM
I have a server running Centos 4.7 32bit. Will moving from 4Gig of
RAM to 8Gig do any good? Since its 32bit I assume it will only be
able to address the first 4Gig not? When I installed CentOS I did not
do anything special to enable using more then 4Gig if thats required.
Exim, spamassassin and Clamd seem to be the biggest load on this
machine. My biggest bottle neck is disk I/O anyway.

LVM Input/output error
Hi,
I recently installed centos for the first time and I like it!
Also, I just started working with lvm. The following warnings
are genertated whenever I run one of lvm commands on the external
usb disk (MyBook by Western Digital).
* What could be the source for those messages?
* Should I worry about them (writing into the created LV's
seems to work)?
* If yes, how to fix them?

RAIDs and JBOD?
Hey Guys,
I have some questions?regarding?a new home server I am going to build
in the hopefully very near future (ASAP, I just need to finish
planning everything and this is the penultimate?hurdle), I will be
creating a software RAID...
Lets say I have three drives "knocking" around which are all 1TB SATA
II drives but each made by a different manufacturer. I am going to

/etc/fstab and windows share problem
Hi,
I`ve got a problem with samba and /etc/fstab.
I have a second computer running Windows XP SP2 with Western Digital
MyBook USB2 external hard disk attached. The Disk is shared over windows
network with a label "My Book (J)".
I can manually mount this samba resource by typing "sudo mount -t smbfs
-o fmask=777,dmask=777,guest '//win/My Book (J)' /media/MyBook", but

Hi,
quick(?) question: Has anybody seen that problem below? More important
question: Did anybody solve that?
This is my smb.conf (well, only the most important parts):

server string = My Server

local master = No

Newbie question about acts_as_taggable
I installed the acts_as_taggable plugin that DHH wrote.
Now I have met problems on using it:
class Book < ActiveRecord::Base
acts_as_taggable
end
mybook = Book.new
mybook.tag_with(''red library book'')
But the system tell the wrong message:

getting a CentOS6 VM on VMware ESXi platform to recognize a new disk device
Hello all,
Is there a way to recognize a hot-plugged disk (i.e., to get the system to
recognize it and build the appropriate /dev/sd* device for the new device)
without a reboot?
Thanks.
Boris.

getting a CentOS6 VM on VMware ESXi platform to recognize a new disk device
Hello Julius,
Thanks - but it doesn't seem to work.
I installed sg3_utils and ran
#scsi-rescan
but that seemed to have done nothing for some reason.
Cheers,
Boris.

While I believe that this URL has technically correct advice, it's
basically doing a subset of the commands in the scsi-rescan script in
the sg3_utils package.
I wonder if you need to be

mounting WD mybook World Edition 2 via samba
Hi there,
I have found a bunch of sites explaining how to mount the WD mybook
World Edition 2 via samba. Fine and Dandy - I've been able to mount the
drive.
I still am unable to write from the ubuntu server to the drive mounted
via samba. What are some things I can check here?

RE: standby mode
I think you answered your own question. Samba (smbd) is a service. It is
doing its job and ready to offer service at any time. Apparently this
involves periodically accessing the disk. There is nothing wrong with this;
it is normal operation. Samba won't work anyway when you are in standby, so
you might as well stop it when you are done using it.

Help with External USB drive on RH/Centos 5
Another issue to tackle - I have an external 1 TB drive (2 500GB on a RAID).
When I plug it into the server, it sees, via /var/log/messages, that a USB
device was plugged in, but that's it. fdisk -l doesn't see it. dmesg doesn't
do much, either. It is a Western Digital My Book II device.
I want to format it and use it for external storage, but can't until I get to
it.

openldap mmr + heartbeat hot standby
Hi List,
I've setup 2 openldap servers in n-way multimaster replication mode in a
test environment, both run centos 6.2,
this works well but now i'm trying to make these 2 servers failover
using heartbeat.
i've got no experience with heartbeat (or setting up clusters in
general) however from what i understand heartbeat starts/stops the
service if the server has the virtual IP

Windows not reconnecting after Standby
Thank you very much. I can confirm that the TAP-WIN32 driver behaves
differently. The quick tests so far revealed that it either reconnected
after Standby and Hibernation.
I think that at some point I started using the OpenVPN drivers when I had
either had trouble with unsigned drivers or the network detection and then
just stayed with it. Thanks for pointing out my self-made problem.

drive to standby after idle timeout?
I'd like to to put the hard drives in standby mode during periods of
no activity. I'm just running a file server plus a couple small
things on a Qube 3 from home, although the web stuff will increase
it's still minimal.
On my NetBSD systems I can use atactl to do this via:
mount -u -o async,noatime,nodevmtime /
mount -u -o async,noatime /usr
atactl wd0 setidle 5

no longer goes to standby when lid is closed
I've heard this happening to someone on IRC, the solution if I remember correctly is to update MATE from epel-testing.
See if that works for you.
