init script question
Hi all, is there a function (or variable) I can use in a custom init script that identifies the init script name? i.e. I'm porting some init scripts from gentoo, where the $SVCNAME variable identifies the init script name within the script itself... d /* Davide Cittaro Cogentech - Consortium for Genomic Technologies via adamello, 16 20139 Milano Italy tel.: +39(02)574303007 e-mail:

bioinformatics repository?
Hi all, I'm new to Centos, just moved here from Gentoo Linux. I have to install a server for bioinformatics purposes and I see that default yum repositories do not include any bioinformatics software (i.e. ncbi-toolkit, blat, and others). I'm googling a bit but I can't find a valuable solution: which is (or which are) the best repository I should add to have a satisfying list

Two NFS issues
Hi, I was hoping someone would have an idea of what's going on here... We have two NFS issues. One of which is certainly centos based, one of which we're not sure of. First issue is: As of Centos 5, we can't make simultaneous access to a directory via NFS. To duplicate, I cd into a share in two windows, copy a 1G file in the first window, and just do an ls in the other. The ls

ZFS on Linux
I am planning to use ZFS on my Centos 5.2 systems. The data I am storing is very large text files where each file can range from 10M to 20G. I am very interested on the compression feature of ZFS, and it seems no other native Linux FS supports it. My question are: Is ZFS stable? How does it scale for very large filesytems, ie, 2TB to 9TB? How is the performance of fuse? I plan to use it on my

waiting IOs...
Hi, We have a storage server (HP DL360G5 + MSA20 (12 disks in RAID 6) on a SmartArray6400). 10 directories are exported through nfs to 10 clients (rsize=32768,wsize=32768,soft,intr,nosuid,proto=udp,vers=3). The server is apparently not doing much but... we have very high waiting IOs. dstat show very little activity, but high 'wai'... # dstat ----total-cpu-usage---- -dsk/total-

ext3 heavy file fragmentation with NFS write
Hello, Does anybody know how to avoid the file fragmentation when a file is created over NFSv3? A file created locally is OK: dd bs=32k if=/dev/zero of=test count=32x1024 conv=fsync filefrag test test: 10 extents found, perfection would be 9 extents When I create the file in the same dir, but from another machine, mounted over NFS: filefrag test test: 4833 extents found, perfection would be

"Too many levels of symbolic links" with glusterfs automounting
I set up a 3.3 gluster volume for another sysadmin and he has added it to his cluster via automount. It seems to work initially but after some time (days) he is now regularly seeing this warning: "Too many levels of symbolic links" $ df: `/share/gl': Too many levels of symbolic links when he tries to traverse the mounted filesystems. I've been using gluster with static mounts

[PATCH] use reliable nfs mount options per default
Peter, we found that nfs over udp will corrupt data under very extrem load, there is no way to fix it due to the way how UDP works. TCP will not have these problems. I also wonder why the package size is only 1k. Everyone who wishes a slow connection can pass the desired options via the kernel cmdline. Everyone else prefers probably the fast mount. The defaults should look more like that: ---

IOwaits over NFS
Hello. We have a number of Xen 3.4.2. boxes which have constant iowaits at around 10% with spikes up to 100% when accessing data over NFS. We have been unable to nail down the issue. Any advice? Problem with large files
Hi we have samba 3.0.14a on FreeBSD 5.4. We tried with different kind of locking and oplocks (both enabled and disabled). If we try to copy from a Windows XP client a file larger than 3g, we get these error: Cannot copy XXX. The specified network name is no longer available. We traced this problem in the logs (log level 10) and we got this error ------------ [2006/09/19 10:29:41, 5]

gcc 4.1 and OpenMP?
I was modifying a source to add OpenMP capabilities. I knew that gcc supports OpenMP since version 4.2, so I've compiled a recent (4.3.2) gcc and installed in my home directory, this because gcc shipped with CentOS 5.2 is 4.1. I've then noticed that my executable links /usr/lib64/libgomp.so, installed with gcc 4.1 from CentOS rpms... Is CentOS default compiler OpenMP ready? Does

Mount locations are pretty consistent based on primary group/userid Needs to work on Linux. Existing entries look like this... # /u,

NFSroot is acting strange in CentOS5
Hello all, I have observed a problem with a diskless PXE client I am attempting to configure. PXE/NFS/DHCP/TFTPd server is running CentOS5.1 and the Diskless workstation's root and kernel was extracted from a CentOS5.1 (custom kernel due to setting to enable Root File System support). Problem: When the diskless client boots and logs in I notice that my root user is being squashed, even if I

extlinux device trouble
Hello, i'm using version 4.07. On my computer extlinux does not work. after debugging, i found the trouble. in the function parse_mountinfo there was using a function get_string. in the function get_string there was a line (42) } else if (ch == '\\') { but in my mountinfo list, there was \ , but not with octal digit. so the function get_string will fail. here are some information

specifying mount options in /etc/auto.master
I have this NFS client that used to be on Red Hat 7.3. For mounting user home directories I used this line in /etc/auto.master file: /home yp:auto.home rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 Moved the box to CentOS 4... The format of the file changed, so I attempted something like this: /home -rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 yp:auto.home No habla. Doesn't work. The rsize and wsize options seems to be
