"User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored" after compilation
Each time I compile Wine and restart Ubuntu (8.04), there's an error just after I log in: "User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users." These commands fix this, but when I

GUI login issues over NFS
I am at my wits end, googling, trying various things, and nothing seems to really solve my problem, so I thought I would break down and write to the community to see if anyone else has run into the issue and actually solved it. My environment of interest contains a mix of various Fedora and CentOS workstations that all participate in NIS for user authentication which then, upon a successful login,

NFS issue
I am currently running K12LTSP on Centos 5, which is working well but without sound on most machines(ok all). So in order to remedy this and the cd-burning issue I have decided to try to install CentOS locally on one machine and then apply the personalizations via NFS. Steps: I editted the /etc/exports to export the /home dir as per the NFS howto and that seemed to work as the user homes were

mounting an AD share upon login
Hi everyone, I am having trouble mounting a share on my AD server upon login. I am using pam_mount. Here is log activity when user 'peter' logs in (with Ubuntu client) and is authenticated by AD server. There is a share called 'peter' on the server (netbios name WIN2003) and the mount point is /home/PRIVATE/peter (see later for pam_mount.conf file): ===================== Jul

Centos 7 member server login fails
I have a problem that is now becoming very annoying. Namely I have a Centos 7 member server running Sernet Samba 4.7.4 for which everything seems to work except gdm or ftp logins. On the linux client it seems winbindd is set up correctly. For example (the data shown below has been sanitized): > getent passwd testuser2:*:3001108:3000513::/home/testuser1:/bin/bash

Can't configure GDM after update to CentOS 7.6
Hi, It looks like the upgrade to CentOS 7.6 has been unusually disruptive with the GNOME desktop version bump and a series of moving targets under the hood. The result is some wreckage at my client's desktop installations, which I've been busy to repair since yesterday. First things first. I have a custom configuration of GDM, which consists mainly of two things. 1. Display my

Disabling the shutdown buttons in graphical login screen of CentOS 6.3
Hi, I am not sure if I probably have overlooked some important clue, but I am stuck with a problem with the gdm-greeter in CentOS 6.3 here since three days without finding any suitable solution. The problem: * I have to somehow deactivate the "Suspend", "Restart" and "Shutdown" options in the login screen. * This has to be done in CLI mode, as I have to change

XDMCP - no GDM login, only gray screen with X
I'm having trouble getting the GDM login screen to show up when I connect from a remote host. I'm using Xming on the local Windows machine, but every time I connect to the remote server all I get is a gray window with the X cursor. I have "Enable=true" in the [xdmcp] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf. IPtables is disabled. I've googled around and read through the xdmcp page

Possibly OT: FreeNX and Gnome Language
If this is too far off topic please let me know and I'll send this to the Gnome list or something. Today I recently had a thai friend want to experience linux. Their limitation is language of course. I set up an account for my friend and had them log in after changing through GDM their language preferences to Thai. The Thai language shows up for me when I log in as the user on the machine. I

Changing the appearance of the login box
I'm the founder and lead developer of the lightweight Linux distro Swift Linux. I'm currently in the process of switching from the old antiX Linux base to the new Linux Mint Debian Edition base. The new Swift Linux will be using LightDM instead of SLiM. I've found that replacing LMDE's default GDM display manager with SLiM disables many functions (like audio). Restoring these

can't login as subsequent FreeIPA users
When I set up a machine with CentOS 8, I used the "Enterprise Login" in the initial setup wizard to authenticate against my FreeIPA server. This worked fine, and I have no issues logging in with that initial user. However, I am unable to use GDM or the console to login as any *other* valid user from FreeIPA. From GDM I get something like "Sorry, that didn't work" and

using command line to setup auto login
I am trying to find a way to set auto login for a machine under X using the command line. I presume I want to use gconftool-2 to do that. Under the old X centos 4 I edited /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf This file no longer exists under X 7 for centos 5. I cant find a way to "show all" under gconftool-2 so that I can see what the key/value pair should be. When I do "gconftool-2 -a "

Package group "X Window System" has disappeared
Hi, Until last week, I could install a CentOS 7 based desktop using the following approach: 1. Install minimal system. 2. yum groupinstall "X Window System" 3. yum install gdm gnome-classic-session gnome-terminal liberation-fonts 4. Install applications as needed. This morning, the package group "X Window System" seems to have disappeared. This is embarrassing. What
