pst: timeout mfa=0x00327b90 cmd=WRITE
I installed a Promise SuperTrak SX6000 ATA RAID controller on 4.8-RELEASE. The following message is logged when the device is under load (equivalent of make release): pst: timeout mfa=0x00327b90 cmd=WRITE Should I be concerned? Does the I/O fail and the driver simply not report the failure to the application? -- Scott

storage servers crashing, hair being pulled out!
I have a trio of servers that like to reboot during high disk / network IO operations. They don't appear to panic, as I have kernel.panic = 0 in sysctl.conf. The syslog just shows normal messages, like samba complaining about browse master and then just syslogd starting up. The machines seem to crash when I'm not near the console, usually when I'm trying to pull data off them to

Hardware RAID Controller
Hi Everyone, Has anyone had any experience of using the Promise FastTrak SX4000 or SuperTrak SX6000 IDE RAID Controllers under Centos (if it matters I'm using version 4). I've seen it listed on linuxcompatible.org as working but would prefer to find out any first-hand experince before I buy. I'm looking to build a new mini server based on Mini-ITX and have found a great 1U case

again, nic driver order
I have two servers with identical hardware ... TYAN i3210w system boards with dual intel gigabit interfaces, and a PCI intel gigabit nic. I'm running Centos 5.4, x86_64, 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 Every other time I reboot, the nics initialize in a different order. anaconda had setup /etc/modprobe.conf with alias lines for the cards: alias eth0 e1000 alias eth1 e1000e alias eth2 e1000e However,

OT: iscsi target bind to two addresses?
Does anyone know off hand how to bind iscsi enterprise target to two distinct addresses. Lets say I have a machine that has a bunch of interfaces on it, with different subnets. Rather than have ietd broadcast itself on all interfaces (the default), I would like to limit it to only two interfaces. I have edited the init.d startup script with --address x.x.x.x which works, but I tried using the

GNOME + Firefox - Mouse froze - what key combination to revive?
Earlier, I was using GNOME and Firefox and the Mouse died. I had to kill the power, to get the box going again, because it doesn't have a reset switch; which is *not* an elegant way to get going. What key combination would get me going or to a shell? CentOS 5, fully updated, 32 bit. TIA!

kernel-devel largesmp or ELlarge?
I'm having trouble updating my iscsitarget modules, and it seems to be related to a naming convention mixup? here's the output of the build command: [root at vmhost ~]# rpmbuild --rebuild --sign iscsitarget-0.4.14.96-0.amherst.src.rpm Installing iscsitarget-0.4.14.96-0.amherst.src.rpm error: Failed build dependencies: kernel-devel = 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELlarge is needed by

bacula rpm --rebuild on x86_64?
I tried to install the latest bacula last night, rebuilding from the source rpm ... this is the command line I used, following the instructions at bacula.org: # rpmbuild --rebuild --define "build_centos4 1" \ --define "build_x86_64 1" --define "build_mysql4 1" bacula-1.39.26-1.src.rpm but the rebuild fails, citing all sorts of dependencies being required. problem

mirroring with LVM?
I'm pulling my hair out trying to setup a mirrored logical volume. lvconvert tells me I don't have enough free space, even though I have hundreds of gigabytes free on both physical volumes. Command: lvconvert -m1 /dev/vg1/iscsi_deeds_data Insufficient suitable allocatable extents for logical volume : 10240 more required Any ideas? Thanks!, Gordon Here's the output from the

libata-core kernel errors
This is a repost of sorts, and for that I am sorry; I do not think my original posting subject was very clear, and I have more data about the problem. I'm experiencing lots of kernel errors when reading or writing to a disk that is part of an mdadm softraid-5 array. Since originally detecting this problem, I have isolated it to one disk, but I'm not sure what the cause of the error is. I

SAS raid controllers
Is anyone running either the newish Adaptec 5805 or the new LSI (3ware) 9750 sas raid controllers in a production environment with Centos 5.3/5.4? The low price of these cards makes me suspicious, compared to the more expensive pre-merger 3ware cards and considerably more expensive Areca ARC-1680. I've been 'burned' by the low cost of Promise raid cards (just as this group pointed

virtual gigabit
Is there anyway to get gigabit networking for a fully virtualized guest? I''ve tried searching for this one, but all I get are results about gigabit networking for the host / dom0, nothing for domU. Copyright versus Licenses
My company recently started using a R library from RCRAN that is licensed under the LGPL Version 2 or greater per the DESCRIPTION file, but contains no copy of the LGPL notice, or any copyright notice. I've grown accustomed to paying attention to copyright and licensing as a Debian package maintainer, and sent the author of the package an email expressing my concern. The author believed that

Please help with configuration
Thanks Michael, I will proceed like this. I think I didn't have UDP 655 forwarded on the remote server, will do that (had it at my client's router). If tinc connects, will both server and client see each other, for example I will be able to access all webui's running on SERVER from CLIENT side? For example, SERVER is running webui of Tvheadend on 192.168.0.4:9981 How can I access that

ot: vlans and vmware
Does anyone have VLAN tagging working from within a guest on vmware-server? I'm running a centos 4.5 guest on a centos 5 host with vmware server 1.04and I've tried creating vlans using both the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts method and just doing it from the cli via vconfig. Either way appears to work, the OS creates the vlans, but I think vmware's network adapter must be eating the

SiL311x SataRaid (sata_sil)
Hi, On my x86_64 system I have a SiL311x controller that can do RAID. If I configure my 2 identical disks in a RAID1 setup, I would expect to see only 1 block device on Linux. Still I see 2 block devices. Is this intentional, and if so, isn't that dangerous ? (i.e. writing to both disks at the same time) Anyone with an insight, please explain :) -- dag wieers, dag at wieers.com,

[RFC] Require PRs for XFAILing tests
This may be an unpopular opinion (and I don’t have the full context on those specific issues), but I believe that these are an abuse of XFAIL, and should probably be written in terms of REQUIRES instead of XFAIL. I believe XFAIL tests actually execute, and are just marked as expected failure. If a test is not expected to ever succeed, we shouldn’t bother running it, which is what the REQUIRES
