HAL Daemon failure on boot up
I've been having a problem for a while: when booting, haldaemon will fail, leaving me without CD/DVD and floppy drives available. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? If so, can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks for listening, Dick -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Strange browser displays with 5.x on Dell GX-260
I had been running CentOS 4.x for quite some time with no problems. Apparently I stubbed my toe when installing CentOS 5 final. Symptoms: various web sites are not properly displayed in Firefox 3.0.1 (or predecessors). In particular, cnn.com and any calls to Google display with a screen full of ascii characters rather than images. When I look at "page info" within Firefox, it

Problem burning DVD+RW discs
Good Day-- I've been backing up my essential stuff to DVD+R discs for quite a while with no trouble at all. Last week I tried backing up to a DVD+RW with no trouble at all. This week, when trying to re-write my weekly backup, CD/DVD Creator told me it could not write to the disc because it was read-only. Is there a bug in CD/DVD Creator or am I doing something incorrectly. Obviously,

X works fine with 2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 but only with xorg.conf as written for 4.5 Haven't seen traffic regarding this problem. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks, Dick -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither

How to stop automount
I just put a USB hard drive into service, but find that unless the drive is connected to my PC the machine won't boot and drops to a shell. Below is the line I added to fstab. I thought that the option "noauto" would prevent the machine from trying to mount the drive /dev/sdb /usbdrive ext3 user, noauto,rw 0 2 What am I doing wrong? Any advice is

Xen4CentOS6 project longevity
We've been using CentOS 5 with Xen on our machines for a while now and have really grown to appreciate it. The lack of Xen for Centos 6 is the reason we haven't upgraded yet, but with Xen4CentOS6 we have all the tools we need. The concern some of are having is that when CentOS7 comes out, which will be probably less than a year, is that Xen support for CentOS6 will evaporate. I know this

Found the answer!!!>>[Fwd: Error when clicking on link>>text error correction]
In FC2, I had installed both Firefox and Thunderbird from Mozilla.org. They were not "resident" as part of the distro. With CentOS4, they are "standard" features. After I adjusted "Preferred Applications" applet to accommodate the change of locations, all started working properly. Thanks for allowing me to take up space and bandwidth. Dick -------- Original

COLUMNS and LINES environment variables
Hello openssh developers, Instead of just playing nethack, I've been building a client that would log in to nethack at alt.org and using a pipe to get the login data from pwsafe directly onto the server. All of this works brilliantly after playing with some stty magic (full script in [0]), however, this way the terminal size is burned into 80x24, which is way smaller than my graphical

Virtual machines booting PXE - PXELINUX
Hello, new to the group. We have been using PXELINUX for some time now with great success. However, with the recent spawn of virtual machines now supporting PXE boot, has anyone been able to mount the disk in this enviornment? Could someone direct me to any information on how to mount and or partition drives? I have discovered the same issue with the HP DX2200 model of PC. For example if I run

A long digression on packages
Hello again, First, thanks for the help that got the latest plotrix package finished. I had been planning to write something about packages since Scott Waichler offered the gantt.chart function. Then Ben Bolker (who helped me to write the axis.break function) asked if I would be willing to include some of his plotting functions and almost immediately after that Sander Oom kindly donated the

Plugins ''speced'' with rSpec?
Hello, I''m trying to figure out how to setup a spec structure for plugins. I''m getting pretty lost in figuring out how to isolate a plugin enviornment emulating rails, but not actually being reflected upon the current rails project. What I mean is this, let''s say I have a comment plugin. This has two things in lib, the comment model (comment.rb) and then the module

Benchmark GlobalsModRef in non-LTO pass pipeline
Greetings folks! I would like to enable globalsmodref-aa in the non-LTO pass pipeline so that it gets tested more and there are fewer differences between the two. For all of my benchmarks, this is performance neutral, but I'd appreciate others benchmarking this combination to see if they see any benefits or regressions. You can demo this mode easily: -mllvm -enable-non-lto-gmr Please let me

Centos 5.7--desktop icons are now a blank sheet of paper with the .desktop filename and they don't work
Just rebooted my box (switched keyboards, and since it's a PS/2 keyboard, it needs to be done at poweroff) and when it came back up, (almost) all the desktop icons I've created (as distinct from the ones that came with the system) now don't display correctly. Instead of the graphic assigned to each, it's just a picture of a blank sheet of paper with the corner folded over, and the

Enabling interpretation of desktop.ini and alphabetical sorting when icons are grouped by type
Hi, How can I make it so that on Samba shares the desktop.ini file is interpreted (responsible for displaying the folder customisations such as icons like My Music or My Pictures folders or others folders customized with the "Customize" tab in the properties window). It is interpreted OK on local folders or on Windows Server 2003 shares, just not on Samba shares. Further more, on Samba
