CentOS Live CD for System Rescue - How to get full root access to HD?
Booting from the CentOS 5.2 Installation DVD (or the first Installation CD), one can type "linux rescue" and then "chroot /mnt/sysimage" and have full root access to the OS on the HD. For future reference, I would like to know what I did wrong, the past couple of days, when trying to use the CentOS 5.2 i386 Live CD, for rescue. From a terminal, "su -" did not seem to

Bricked my system
Updated to CentOS 7.4 No wifi. The wifi was using wl-something driver that had third party firmware but it wasn't seen. Attempted to get network with ethernet from the mobo to router but it wouldn't come up. So I rebuilt the wl-whatever kernel module and installed the updated version built against the newer kernel. Now when attempting to boot it gets stuck at "i8042 no

Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode
I boot from the installation DVD, with an already existing CentOS 5.5 system on my hard disks. I have separate boot, root, and home partitions. I have moved the boot partition and now I need to re-initialize grub from rescue mode. Attempting to use 'rescue mode" to automatically mount my system under /mnt/sysimage eventally fails with an error message, which essentially says

Unable to mount devices in rescue mode
Booting to CentOS 5.5 works and I am able to login with all my devices mounted. When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens mount my partitions in read/write mode: "An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage." But nothing

/mnt/sysimage/dev folder in rescue mode
If I boot C5 from DVD in rescue mode, chroot to /mnt/sysimage, and try to do a grub-install /dev/sda it will fail because the /dev folder is empty (in the chroot environment). Until now I've then created the missing nodes manually, but is there a smarter way of doing this? Some devfs that needs to be mounted on top of /dev? CentOS 7 install on one RAID 1 [not-so-SOLVED]
Let me see if I can, um, reboot this thread.... I made a RAID 1 of two raw disks, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, *not* /dev/sdax /dev/sdbx. Then I installed CentOS 7 on the RAID, with /boot, /, and swap being partitions on the RAID. My problem is that grub2-install absolutely and resolutely refuses to install on /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. I've currently got it up in a half-assed rescue mode, and have

OT: Dropbox - Fedora Core 9 RPM will work on CentOS 5.4?
Dropbox has an RPM for Fedora Core 9 (x86). I am running CentOS 5.4 on my Desktop, which I believe is based on Fedora Core 6. Are the libraries Fedora Core 9 uses substantially different than those CentOS 5.4 uses? If Dropbox had an SRPM available, I would Download that and Rebuild, but I'm sure it is Proprietary and they won't release an SRPM to me. TIA! Lanny

OT: Package to truncate .mp3 file
I have a 2.9 MB MP3 file. Would like to use about the first 10%, to embed sound on a web page. The Packages I have in Applications > Sound & Video don't seem to be able to edit the file like that. Is there a Package I can get from a Yum Repository that will do that? Using CentOS 5.5 (32 bit). TIA!
