rsh problems in CentOS 5.2 (was "cvs command failure on 5.2")
Okay, I've narrowed the problem down quite a bit. As previously
reported, in CentOS 5.2 I get this:
$ cvs log Makefile
poll: protocol failure in circuit setup
cvs [log aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)
Turns out this is a problem with rsh:
$ rsh khan ls

rsh/rlogin on CentOS4.2
Hello all,
I'm not quite sure what has changed in the recent rsh commands, but I
can't seem to get around the password promting. I need a clnk rsh between
two machines in order to run my backup script.
I added all the usual .rhosts with the proper permissions et al added the
xinetd.d confilg files, opened ports 543 and 544 in my firewall, yet when
I use the rsh commands, I get either a

AIX SSH 2.x ssh and /etc/ftpusers rcp rlogin WRONG !
IF ssh is a replacement for rlogin, rsh etc I can accept it respecting
rlogin=false as rlogin does and rsh does not, however scp is a replacement
for rcp, and rcp does NOT use rlogin attribute, so the implementation is
NOT standard as scp fails if rlogin=false, but rcp succeeds, as documented.

rsh issue/update (access denied)...
hi...
i've got an "access denied" issue with rsh on one of my boxes (and before we
start, no "use ssh" comments.. rsh is what i'm dealing with for now!!)
i've got a few boxes in my network, and i can successfully rsh into them
with no issue. however, on one box, i can't access it using rsh, and i'm
running out of things to try... kind of curious.
i can

ssh - NO SALE or NO GIVE ?
Thanks to everyone who has replied to my emails so far - to summarise:
AIX allows setting of rlogin=false and and a su group, or a list of users
that are permitted to "su" to root. ( or other functional ids )
This means with entries in /etc/ftpusers, it is possible to :
1/ Track who used root via sulog and or external logging
2/ Protect root even if the root password is compromised

Password-less daemon or rsh setup
I'm new to rsync and trying to configure it to run through either the daemon
or rsh (ssh is not avalilable). Doing an 'rlogin production' results in a
password prompt - which I want rid of, as we're basically going to have a
robot user running a cron job that utilises rsync. I'm at a loss as to why
I can't configure rlogin to user hosts.equiv or similar - any help on this

AD returns only one group for all users
Dear list,
I'm trying to get a Thumper (Sun Fire X4500) to play nice with AD so
that we can offer a nearline storage service. Since many of our users
will have multiple group memberships, it's imperative that samba be able
to recurse through the groups that a user is a member of to determine if
they have access to a resource.
What happens instead is that every user who authenticates is

Fw: winbind, active directory and solaris 8
I sent this the other day, but did not get any replies, can anyone help?
Hi All,
I have a sparc solaris 8 server running samba 2.2.11 (which i complied with
winbind).
The server has been running for years and has about 20 local users setup
using local files for openssh and rexec logins, and samba shares.
They each use samba to map to their home directory and a common shared
folder.
They also

remote Asterisk console
Hello group,
what is the preferred method to connect to asterisk cli over network? I
need to run asterisk cli commands remotely.
Sharing the unix socket through NFS, if that's working?
Or any other approaches, despite using SSH or rlogin, rsh.
Thank you

should vsftpd be disabled in favour of sftp for security reasons?
(another in an ongoing list of things i just want to clarify for the
sake of future courses taught on centos.)
from this RHEL doc page:
http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Deployment_Guide/s1-openssh-server-config.html
the reader is advised to, for the sake of security, remove/disable
vsftpd, ostensibly in favour of sftp/sftp-server. really?

rsh with passwords
I am doing rsync over a private network. Encryption is not required.
Currently rsync over ssh works, but requires too many CPU cycles
(especially when doing a lot of transfers) on a CPU-bound system. I need
to use rsh instead.
The problem is, I can either set rsh to allow transfers without a
password, or it won't let me transfer files at all.
I need rsh to ask for a password. The network

PAM config file installation
This might have been covered before and I've missed it. If so, sorry in
advance.
The file sshd.pam.generic didn't work for me on Linux RH6, I guess it's
a Solaris file. Instead I copied the file /etc/pam.d/rlogin to
/etc/pam.d/sshd . I wonder if this isn't a good way to go about things
anyway, have an install target that does just that?
Perhaps the rsh file is more appropriate

Understanding iptables
In following up on the rsh "problem" I was having earlier, I decided
to try out the suggestion Felipe sent about using
system-config-securitylevel-tui to open up ports 513 and 514, but that
doesn't seem to do the job, either.

Solaris Winbind LDAP pam_mkhomedir.so
Dear list,
How do I test whether I have access to my winbind LDAP backend from my
Solaris 9 machine? My LDAP database is held on a Redhat 9.0 machine also
running Samba 3.0.0.
I know winbind works because getent and wbinfo show up my NT users and
groups.
I would also like to have people log into my Solaris 9 machine with their NT
usernames, I have this working on Redhat already but Solaris is

Re: Security Concern..
[Mod: This message is a reason *why* linux-security is moderated list. This
is also a reason why Rogier, myself, Alan Cox and others really do not want
to have completely open lists that deal with security related aspects of
running a system as way too many people just jump to conclusions and give
suggestions without doing any reasearch on a subject. -- alex (co-moderator

R and sun gridengine
Hi
I am looking for assistance with setting up R under Sun grid engine 6
(6.0-update7). I would like to set up transparent interactive access
to R using either a qlogin or qrsh solution. While it basically works
using either method, I reach the same sticking point. There seems
to be an issue with signalling or something, as R works ok until a
non-R command is typed in - eg "blah" - at

OpenSSH public key problem with Solaris 10
Hi ya'll-
I've got this odd openssh problem with Solaris 10 I was hoping someone
could shed some light on. Not sure if it is a bug... Basically I'm
trying to use pubkeys as an auth method, but am having issues. I can
log in using passwords no problem, but as soon as it notices a matching
public key it closes the connection. I ran the sshd server (on Solaris
10 box) in debug
