ls and rm: "argument list too long"
Since when is there a limit in how long directory listings CentOS can show
(ls), or how large directories can be removed (rm). It is really annoying to
say, for example
rm -rf /var/amavis/tmp
and get only "argument list too long" as feedback.
Is there a way to go round this problem?
I have CentOS 5.2.

Email pid issue
Hello gents,
First time poster here!
Current system running Centos 6.8. Buddy of mine posted a few days back about me wanting to move
from Postfix 2.6.x to 2.8 to above, still under centos 6.8. I might move over to 7, but probably
not for a while, don't have the resources presently to make this happen.
Running Centos 6.8, postfix 2.6.6, clamav 0.99.1. Basic Centos 6.8 box fully patched

Openwebmail dependency problem
Ok, I have to ask. I tried to yum install the latest openwebmail (from
the openwebmail repo), and got a transaction check error about a
conflict with some packages which are needed by amavisd and spamassassin
(packages originating from rpmforge, I think). Below is the yum output.
By googling I found a lot of descriptions of the problem, but no solution.

Sendmail problem - baffled
Our backup mail server (which I have just re-configured) tries to
contact the primary mail server, and fails. My log shows repeatedly

Sendmail with TLS, permission problem
Hello, list,
I have a problem with Sendmail configuration.
I'm building (on CentOS 5) a "dual-MTA" setup with amavisd-new (as specified
in amavisd-new documentation, file README.sendmail-dual).
So far so good. But when I tried to add server SMTP-AUTH and TLS, I get a
strange, permission-related error, and STARTTLS will not start.
In my .mc conf, the Sendmail user is now the usual

Installing 4.4 - problem on 386
I tried installing with several options (noacpi noapm; noprobe; noprobe
skipddc noacpi noapm nodma). Always I get the same error.
BUT this is not in fac a CentOS problem at all, because I get the same error
always when I boot from hd (Fedora Core), IF there is a CD in the CD-ROM
drive. (I tried with CentOS 1/4, CentOS 2/4 and a HP printer software CD.)
It must be something with the CD drive!

Amavis on Centosl help
I'm moving from Ubuntu to CentOS 7
Previously, on Ubuntu, installing amavisd would lead to
etc/amavis/conf.d that contained:

15-content_filter_mode
20-debian_defaults
21-ubuntu_defaults
25-amavis_helpers
30-template_localization
40-policy_banks
50-user
However installing amavisd on centos leads to a spaghetti config file

Yum loses memory when kernel is upgraded
Centos 5.x
Why could this be? After I loaded a xen kernel (by mistake), yum seemed to
lose its knowledge of my CentOS version. I had that fixed by "yum install
centos-release" (I had first to fix the repo addresses for this to succeed).
But after that, I noticed that yum did not remember anymore, what packages
were already installed. It seems that the something happens to the rpm

Not firewall, but what?
I have a strange problem, where some clients see the website on my
server and some do not. It is not about the iptables, and seems to be
not about tcp wrapper. Still it is something within the box.
More details:
- the problem is only with some clients, with no geographical connection
between them; other clients see the website just fine
- the problem-clients get timeout with their browser

Mailman - searchable archive
Mailman works well for our mailing lists, but the archive is
unacceptable - the worst thing is lack of search function.
I got one tip for this:
1) emails converted to html format with mhonarc
2) search can be done with htdig
Opinions? Maybe there are better software solutions for this - I hope.

Disk quotas for Sendmail
Hi,
CentOS 5.x, Sendmail 8.13.8.
I would like to start using disk quotas on my Sendmail server, and optimally
they should be configurable by user or group. How can this be done? (I tried
to google, but no success.)

Openwebmail emergency (Perl)
After system update yesterday, Openwebmail now gives an error:
> Undefined subroutine &Compress::Zlib::memGzip called at /var/www/cgi-bin/openwebmail/shares/ow-shared.pl line 1175.
I tried to do
perl -MCPAN -e shell
install Compress::Zlib
But it says Compress::Zlib is up-to-date. What do to?? I cannot find an
answer by googling.

KVM resources?
Later this week I will have to install a serious KVM setup, and I am
looking for background material.
I found a nice how-to:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/KVM
...but it is probably partly outdated by now.
Then there is a fine virtualization manual:
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Virtualization/
...but it seems to be only for xen.
I plan to use either CentOS 5.6 or Scientific Linux

File sharing solution
I would like to offer my isp clients a solution for sharing (big) files,
basically on one-to-one basis. This is how I imagine it:
- an anonymous or registered user can upload a file
- on response (s)he will get a file-specific (or batch-specific)
username/password
- (s)he can send a link and un/pw by email
- the receiver can download the file
- the file will be automatically deleted from the

Changing size of a xen guest filesystem
It should be easy, but I have not yet found a solution. Only some
methods involving use of dd, but that sounds a little scary to me on a
production server.
I wish there would be a command "virt-resize", but no... Maybe
"virt-clone", with the option --file=DISKFILE, could be bended to do this?

Xen stack scheme
I need to restructure my server farm from tower PC:s to a minimal amount
of 1U rack servers. I am going to rely on xen virtualization, as KVM
seems not to be very mature yet.
My current problem is the mail server, which uses a lot of CPU and I/O.
A dedicated machine would be the best option. But would there be any
sense in this:
- run the mail server in xen dom0 (to get full native

More on amavis/clam permission errors on Centos 6.3
I should probably find either the amavis or clam list(s) and take this
there?
Anyway, I have totally rebuilt my machine with clean installs. I have
spent time carefully (I hope!) studying the amavis and clamav conf files
before starting them and running the tests. Here is what I am getting:

Per-user limits for port access
Centos 5.x again...
Is there a way to limit port access on a per-user basis? My practical goal
is to limit, who is allowed to use SMTP AUTH in Sendmail. Any possible
solutions appreciated...
Obviously, limiting by ip will not work, since the very purpose of SMTP AUTH
is to enable mail relaying for trusted users from *anywhere*.
