I've been hacked -- what should I do next?
My home system has been hacked. It's running CentOS 4.4, and I
recently added an account to play around with Samba shares to back up
PCs here at home. I had set a weak password for that account and
forgot to disable it after my testing. I could hear the disk being
accessed constantly, so I knew something was up. I disabled the port
forwarding to my CentOS box on my Linksys router

radio broadcasting using FLUID
Guys,
I have finally succeded in runing Fluid which is a streaming media , this is
how I did it.
First of all I had to download JRE (java run time ) into my rh 9.0 box,
then compiled the fluid module as follows:
# cd /home/fluid
# java FLUID conf/fluid.config
as soon as compiled it would launch the server in a listenning mode , the
fluid.config script contains a file called

firefox and D state
Previously when firefox went catatonic
to the point that I could not even scroll,
its CPU usage had gone to 100%+.
Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space)
or sometimes kswap... has process state D,
uninterruptable sleep.
Any suggestions on how to deal?
I often have a lot of tabs open,
so discovering the right one was hard enough before.
Usually, it was something relatively new,

CFD Plots in R and Other Things
Dear All,
I am getting some data from fluid dynamics simulations (air mixing in
a pipe, 2D axial symmetry, geometry described by a radial coordinate r
and an axial coordinate z) which I'd like to plot and analyze with R.
Think about slicing the cylinder along its axial direction to get a
set of cross sections which are orthogonal to the z axis.
For each section, I have a set of velocity

Thunderbird or Dovecot bug? (multiple keywords)
Here's a strange one. I have a user who's using Thunderbird 2.0.0 and
assigning multiple tags (keywords) to emails, which are getting "lost"
(I'll explain) when he leaves the folder and comes back. I can reproduce
this on *his* account myself, but cannot reproduce it on *my* account
(separate new TBird 2.0.0 profiles on Windows XP).
Use the two TBird default tags

More FlacPak stuff
For those who are interested in checking out my initial specification
for the FlacPak format, I updated the web pages at:
http://swami.sourceforge.net/flacpak.php
The direct link to the specification notes:

For those who weren't reading the previous threads, FlacPak is a format

R vs Fortran
Dear R experts
I work in computational fluid dynamics in 2D: I have a 200-by-200
array of fluid properties such as density and velocity and these
evolve in time (the precise equations depend on the problem).
Up to now, I've been using Fortran and the code is very very messy.
It works, but a professional programmer friend of mine saw the source
code once, and had to be strapped down for his

24G running on centos 5 desktop.
Hi All,
Thought I would let those that are interested know that I had success in
running 24G on an Asus P6T with 24G kit of Kingston DDR3. While I was
putting this together I saw lots of forum posts asking if anyone had tried
it. Well we did here at our work and all looks great including running
"memtest86" overnight.
I have a fluid dynamics simulation running on it with 90% memory

4 Final, RC1 -> Final?
Build team -- what's our current outlook on the 4 Final release shaping
up to be (ie, this week, next week, a month..)? Should it be further
out, would it be relatively painless to 'upgrade' (so to speak) from the
current RC1 to Final when it rolls around?
thanks!

RHN-like system for CentOS?
Team,
Is anyone aware of a Red Hat Network alike system of server package
update status that could be adapted for CentOS3? I'm not interested in
the complete management aspect (channels, scheduling remote updates,
etc) but merely the ability to see your list of systems and determine
which are out of date with XXX packages. If you happen to manage a
large-ish number of RHES3 systems, you

How to keep plot title same as column name using apply/sapply?
Dear list,
I am trying to plot histogram of a 10 by 5 matrix by columns.
What is a good way to paste the column names?

gcc, libkrb4 problem
I'm trying to recompile the source RPM from the FC3 version of cvs
(http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/3/i386/SRPMS.updates/cvs-1.11.17-4.src.rpm),
as the version shipped on RHEL/CentOS/etc has a known bug (version
1.11.2-unix "cvs watch on" doesn't work).
The initial configure is failing with this obscure error:

Strange occurrence
You mentioned that your systems are running Fedora Core.
At 4:00 every morning cron runs the updatedb script to
update the locate database. That script looks for files on
all local files systems on the machine. When it does this
it causes starvation of memory so the kswap process activates,
while that process is looking for candidates to move to swap
space your regular user processes will

Public kudos to Timo
I'm sitting here working away on various unrelated projects and watching
patch after patch after patch flow in from Timo to fix all sorts of
problems people are reporting. A coding madman on fire.
Thanks Timo, you rock. I appreciate the time you spend on this software,
I'm sure everyone else does as well. :)

CentOS4 + Subversion?
Hey all - does RHES4/CentOS4 beta contain a recent integration of
Subversion? I've been holding off trying to retro-fit CentOS 3.x on our
CVS server, hoping that the official channels aready had it in store for
the future. Not that you *can't* retrofit, I was just uncomfortable
upgrading so many stock packages.
Anyone have it installed, can take a look for me?
thx,

Multiple private namespace question
(apologies if this has been covered, can't find it on the Wiki/FAQ, etc.)
We have a stellar, fantastic, hard working Dovecot 1.0.5 (yes, I need to
upgrade) installation running in Courier-IMAP compatibility mode:
