syslog-ng
Hello,
I know centos does not use syslog-ng, but I have installed it at my
university. My intention is if a particular string appears in my
/var/log/messages I would like to get an email alert.
For example, if i see a message "foo" in /var/log/kern I would like to
email myself.
Any idea how to do this? Has anyone done this before?
TIA

BackupPC
I was a bit surprised to find that BackupPC
does not seem to be available on my CentOS-5.2 system.
What do people use to backup Centos systems?

ls and rm: "argument list too long"
Since when is there a limit in how long directory listings CentOS can show
(ls), or how large directories can be removed (rm). It is really annoying to
say, for example
rm -rf /var/amavis/tmp
and get only "argument list too long" as feedback.
Is there a way to go round this problem?
I have CentOS 5.2.

small window manager
What is an alternative X window manager, supported by CentOS,
that has very small memory footprint?
I want to avoid twm, because it defaults to interactive placement when
not giving geometry options. No other requirements.

fix firefox?
I once had firefox x86_64 installed (because it was the default).
But that one has problems with plugins (flash, java), which are
much easily solved by using the i386 version.
So I unstalled firefox, and installed it again using:
yum install firefox.i386
This worked, and even the plugins worked fine afterwards.
I did have some problems when uninstalling, because yum insisted
on a whole load

php5 and sqlite
Is there any reason (besides upstream does it) to compile
php5 with --without-sqlite in CentOS5 ?
Would it conflict with the sqlite that yum needs?
Is there a repo (centosplus, rpmforge...) having a php5 and sqlite
enabled ?
I can only find older mails that seem to imply it does not harm to
include sqlite (and some which seem to imply the contrary as well,
but without any facts) but I can find

resolving names it is really slow slow with CentOS5.x using named
Hi all,
I have a problem using named with different CentOS5 servers (2 servers): all
they are really slow to resolv any internet address and most of time fails to
resolv. This situation differs if I use "forwarders" servers like opendns:
resolving names it is really really quickly. And I don't understand why.
On the other hand I have tested three DNS servers using Windows

Another Postfix (or procmail ??) question
Is there a simple way to strip out what I assume is a header that asks
for a receipt that the message was delivered?
I never like to send such receipts, and they are annoying.
It mostly happens on a couple lists I'm on (not this one) - I don't just
want it for myself, I may be setting up a list soon and if soon, would
want to strip such requests out of the message before the list

Crontabs
Hey list,
I have several crontabs set up to run at night and I'm not convinced
they are running but of course, I'm not here to see for sure!
The crontabs are like the following example;
30 20 * * * sh /home/a_user/nightlyscrips/nightly_script_1 >
/home/a_user/nightlyscripts/`date +%d-%m-%Y--%H-%M-%S`.log
However, if this would have successfully ran last night I would surely
expect to

character translations with smbclient (was Share Access)
Hi,
Thanks for the tip.
I went to the Netherlands last week so didn't get a chance to try this
out until this week.
I upgraded to samba 2.2.3a and that helped. The bad news is that it only
solved some of the problems. The file link to the floppy backs up now as
the translation of the link is consistent somehow, but the character
translation on the $ (dollar sign) and ? (pound sign) is not

Inquiry:How to compare two files but not in line-by-line basis?
Dear All
Can you please do me favor and let me know how can I compare two files but
not in line-by-line basis on my CentOS server ? I mean say row#1 in file1
has the same data as say row#5 in file2 , but the comm compares them in
line-by-line basis that is not intended . It seems that the diff cannot do
the job as well .
Thank you in advance

Using umask
Grasping a full understanding of setting default Users, Groups
and Masks has alluded me over the years, but now I find myself in
a situation where manually "setting" the file/directory
attributes is becoming a pain.
I understand the fundamentals of the file attributes, though from
time to time I have to review the "sticky bit"; what I do not
understand is where/how the
