High Speed WAN Rsync now possible!!!
Folks-
Just wanted to plug a totally awesome software package from a group I
know: UDR (UDT Enabled Rsync).
For those not familiar with UDT, it is a low level network protocol
based on UDP that allows for high speed transfers over high latency WAN
networks:

For a while the UDT API was available, developed by the Laboratory for
Advanced Computing at the

Suggested additions for TINC
1. The UDT library is a BSD-licensed accelerated UDP-based
transport.
Would tinc be able to use this for UDP-based connections and would the
licensing be acceptable?

2. I would like to see a 3rd compression protocol added to tinc:
one

bug: recursive directory copy that re-copies nightly
I''m seeing a recurring, nightly copy of files which are not changing. I get the following message every night from tagmail.
1. It happens once per day (not every 30 minutes)
2. The files haven''t changed in months
3. The files aren''t changing -- there''s only one md5 in the clientbucket for each file
4. There''s no schedule on the resource
5. The files

macintosh file clutter on samba filesystems.
I have a client who has a bunch of macs accessing some samba shares, and
they write these ._filename and .DS_STORE files all over the place, he
would perfer it to not write these files at all. Anyone ran into this
issue? what would be the best way to prevent these files from getting
written onto the shares? veto?

Domain cannot be contacted
I have setup two samba domain controllers, both have basicly the same
configs and use the same ldap database backend. Often however when
logging in users will get a "domain cannot be contacted" error,
attempting to login multiple times will eventually get them in and it
will work fine from then on.
The question is, is there anything else I really need to do to make this
work correctly?

Using large-scale repetition in audio compression
This idea is so simple that I'm sure it must have been thought of
before, and discarded, since AFAIK it's not used anywhere. I did a
quick web search but that didn't turn up much, so I figured I'd put
it up for discussion here anyway.
How about using large-scale repetition in audio compression? I'm
thinking of redundancy in repeated pieces of a song, ie a chorus.

Daily snapshots...
All,
How can I get at the daily snapshots?
When I go to the website, www.openssh.com, and follow the Linux
link to portable.html and then go to request the daily snapshot from
http://bass.directhit.com/openssh_snap/, I get prompted for a user id
and password. Needless to say, I ain't got.
That's real useful. Use to be, I could get the snapshots from
the ftp site. Then things

3.3beta2 on centos 6.2 seems very broken
i have been playing with 3.3beta2 for a few weeks now and i can easily
create inconsistencies between replicas.
my first test was to start an rsync from a client using the gluster fuse
code and then reboot one of the servers. after the rsync finishes, i
can see that the replicas are out of sync (which is to be expected), so
i start a self-heal via find. after that has run to completion, i

xml output from * ?
Hi Yawl,
I took delivery this morning of a used BetaBrite LED
display sign which I promptly set about playing with.
Having found a windows app that grabs XML headline
files from places like Slashdot and CNN as well as
stocks etc I had an idea.
What if I could get it to display stats from *? Things
like call volume, queue stats, message waiting info.
Now I'd be looking for someone to write

another odd centos 4 issue
while in firefox if i use arrow keys in text fields, it acts very oddly.
starting at the beginning of the line it works fine for a few characters
and then jumps to the end of the line. backarrow jumps backwards from the
end of line to within a few chars of the beginning.
anyone else seeing this?

tzdata update, but no announcement?
i see one available in the repos, but i don't recall seeing any
announcement about it. from googling, it does seem to be real, but still
a bit disconcerting to not have an announcement about it.

40 second delay on automounts with 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 kernel
after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on
automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to
autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel.
i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has
jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm

core 2 duo motherboards and centos 4
from my googling around, it doesn't look there is a single motherboard
that supports core 2 duo and works without patches or tweaks. is that
true? the main thing we want is:

Mathlib
First of all I would like to join the chorus of approval over the release
of R 1.0.0. It really is an excellent piece of software. I'm sure you
will astonish us again with Omega.
I have a query about Mathlib. It is such a nice collection of functions
that it would be nice to use it in other software, not necessarily related
to R. Is it possible to build Mathlib separately, and/or install

vorbis ogg vs. aac
Hi folks:
this is my second question at this list and I wanted to mention that with
answers and guides I got from 2 persons last time, I got a quite low rate
stream in vorbis ogg, in about 5 minutes after reading what you wrote-
Thanks!
Well after that, I pointed my attention to the so called AAC, and after
tweaking a bit I got my AAC stream up and connected to Icecast serv.

tiny bug in R installation (redhat)
First, let me join the chorus of praise for R. (Hey, isn't somebody going
to analyse all these praise emails in some statistical way?)
I'm writing to point out an error in the file permissions in the
linux/redhat version. (I'm using R-base-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm, by the way.)
The permissions in /usr/lib/R/doc/html aren't correct, since
