You can't get there from here
Having been accomodating about it in the past, the technical geniuses at Comcast have permanently blocked port 25, separating me (at my home office) from my employer's e-mail server. What can be done on the server side to keep Postfix listening on 25 _and_ accept my connections on some other port? Is there a Postfix solution? iptables maybe? Miark

pcre vs. regexp for Postfix checks
What are your opinions on pcre vs regexp for header_, body_, and mime_checks in Postfix? I looked at the regexp_table and prce_table man pages, and see almost no difference other than the available flags. Miark

Port 631 closed, not hidden
I have the firewall turned on my CentOS 5 box, but GRC is reporting that 631 is closed instead of stealthed. If the firewall isn't configured to allow that, then why might that be happening? Miark

OpenSSH sget/sput suggestion
Not sure if this has ever been suggested before as a feature request, but I am getting off my lazy a** and sending this Email to your list. Hopefully you will think it is a wonderful idea. I am forever using the wonderful OpenSSH on many systems and have done so for many years. But I often find myself wanting to transfer files while ssh'ed into another system. If I could just have a

Samba Guest Account
Wow I'm sending my second cry for help before the first even gets a reply, I'm starting to feel like a moron because I have no idea how I caused this current hitch. Here's the story: I was trying to add an acct called "administrator" to samba which has an enabled, good linux acct. I never did get that acct working for some unknown reason, but what happened as a result of my

VMWare vs Parallels, and Zen
I've seen several references to running VMWare under CentOS, but does anybody know how well Parallels runs under CentOS? On a related note, now that Zen is as mature as it is, are commercial VMs really much better than Zen? Miark

sid_to_uid/public share problem
I've got a public share that any user is supposed to be able to access. But no matter who I try to connect as, I get the dreaded: "NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER". Important info: Samba version: 3.0.28a, OS: Kubuntu 8.04 Looking at the logs, I think the problem is here: auth/auth_util.c:create_token_from_username(1116) sid_to_uid for pcguest

How do I create a globally accessible directory [partly solved] (XP works/98 doesn't)
I just want a simple, globally accessible directory for anyone on my LAN. I don't care who they are, who they're logged in as on their windows machine, I don't care about security (it's my own private LAN!!!). Why is this so difficult to do? I've looked through the archives (which by the way, could someone spend a few minutes and put a SEARCH feature there. Following threads

NIS problems after installation
so, i just installed CentOS on our server and set up NIS using the same configuration as on our other server, but the clients' ypbind services complain that although they can find the correct server, the server does not respond to requests. to debug this, i've: * pinged the server using its ip and it's name * ssh'ed to the server using it's ip and name *

Gnome Terminal and xterm problems
I've noticed this in CentOS 4 & 5 and Fedora 5 & 6. If I'm in Gnome desktop and using any of the terminal programs and I ssh into any server, the connection just hangs. Not drops, it just hangs and doesn't recover. These servers are all over the country on different ISPs in Tier1 datacenters. Some are in our office, so they are on the local lan. We have a mix of RHEL 3, 4

accented characters in filenames mangled when rsyncing to a samba share
Hi folks, I am having a problem rsyncing files with accents in the names. I've seen similar problems reported a few times before in the archives but they didn't seem to be referring to exactly the same problem as what I have, and I'm not good enough at Linux to solve my problem by generalising from the information there: sorry. Anyway, my specific details are this. I am running rsync

Simple and Stupid Share...
Hullo, All... I have HPUX 10.20 with SaMBa 2.2.3a installed... All I want to do is make a single share with read only access for everybody, no matter the user people are using, in other words, they don't need to have the user on the server side. I tried to setup, with no success. Anybody knows something? Thanks...

samba not logging windows user names
Hi, Is it possible that samba logs the windows username of the person that is connecting to a share. On many shares I use 'force user = testuser'. In the log I only see the messages "connect to service test as user testuser". This gives me only the username smbd should become. I also tried logging to a file which contains '%U' but this give me very often the

connections always mapped to guest
I have setup Samba 2.2.4 on HPUX 11.0. I'm using it only as a print server. It appears that ALL connections are being mapped to "pcguest" regardless whether they are valid or not. I do not have a "username map" defined, "guest ok = yes" is set for my printer share. I am running winbindd, which seems to be working correctly. I ran the following command 5 times,
