IO causing major performance issues
Hello everyone.
I'm wondering what other people's experiences are WRT systems becoming
unresponsive (unable to ssh in, etc) for brief periods of time when
a large amount of IO is being performed. It's really starting to
cause a problem for us. We're on Dell PowerEdge 1955 blades - but this same
issue has caused us problems on PE1950, PE1850, PE1750 servers.
We're running

Xen 3.0.3 disk i/o
Hello,
I''ve seen from time to time where a domU using heavy disk I/O can slow down
an entire server (including all other domU''s and dom0). Is there a way to
schedule or limit this in Xen 3.0.3?
Thank you,
Brian

pvmove speed
Are there any ways to improve/manage the speed of pvmove? Man doesn't show any documented switches for priority scheduling.
Iostat shows the system way underutilized even though the lv whose pe's are being migrated is continuously being written (slowly) to.
Thanks!

Network Interface Options
I see that by default Xen seems to emulate a Realtek 8139 in my hvm''s.
I have a quad port Intel PCIe nic available and wondered if I remove the network line altogether from the config and pass the nic in will I have near native performance without pv drivers?
Also, is it possible to pass in one of each of the 4 ports into 4 different hvms? I don''t exactly know how the NIC

heavy IO load when working with sparse files (centos 6.4)
Dear List,
We have noticed a variety of reproducible conditions working with sparse files on multiple servers under load with CentOS 6.4.
The short story is that processes that read / write sparse files with large "holes" can generate an IO storm. Oddly, this only happens with holes and not with the sections of the files that contain data.
We have seen extremely high IO load for

USB disk IO
Hello - frequently I turn on my external USB 3.0 disk and back. While my
machine is copying and backing up my desktop becomes very sluggish.
Is there a way to change that ? I am using CentOS 7.5 x86 with a very nice
processor extra cores available and plenty of memory. There is no reason
the "other" cores cannot keep the desktop going.
Thanks,
Jerry

remote command execution
I need to launch a job remotely from a Windows machine on a CentOS box, the caveat is that I can't maintain a connection once I have initiated the job. Anyone got an idea how I can accomplish this?
Thanks!

Install on two discs with Software Raid and LVM
I am mirroring two drives during install, what's the best practice here for the swap partition? Maybe two separate lv's from independent vg's *not* mirrored for swap and the let the OS manage it? Boot and the / vg will be mirrored.
Thanks!

merge an lvm snapshot back
So how does one accomplish this if say the snap is now deemed the copy of interest? I am hoping dd is not the only answer:)

Re: Poor performance running WinXP x86 hvm underCentOS5.1x64 with xen3.1
I found on some CPUs an ACPI based HVM chews up a lot of CPU time versuses an APIC HVM, so in Windows I would change the computer type in device manager to "Standard PC" and disable acpi in the domain config.

Problem with allocation of big files
Hello,
I found a strange problem with allocationg big files on drive.
For example in guestfish I allocate large disk image
for example:
$ guestfish
><fs> allocate test.img 20G
When an image allocating, there is a big slowdown of guest OSes,
launched on host machine, and on different drives.
For Linux guests with virtio drivers, there is no so big performance
penalty, but for FreeBSD

Kernel question(s): I/O handling
I have been chasing down the way the inode and page caches are
structured and handled, but there is a mystery I have not been able to
track down yet. How does the I/O queue that dirty inodes and pages are
put into when it's time to flush them out to disk get picked up? Also,
where are the sources for the I/O schedulers? I haven't been able to
locate them yet either.
I know this

ionice
Hi Everyone,
I''m experimenting with ionice, and I have to say at first impressions
I''m very impressed!
Does anyone have any idea how I could script the ionice config? I''m
using phy for my DomUs so everything appears in ps as blkback.<DOMID>.xvda1
The problem is, is that the process id for the blkback process will
change after every DomU restart,

Xen HVM images on VMware ESX
Hi everyone,
I''m trying to convert some Xen HVM images to run on VMware ESX,
unsuccessfully thus far. I believe the problem is that ESX by default
wants the VMs to use SCSI virtual disks, but my HVM VMs are configured
to use IDE virtual disks. If you have any experience with this sort of
thing, please get in touch.
Thanks!

Ok, Jumbo's enabled on the switch and media server. For the sake of our sanity jumping back and forth, I am trying to enable jumbo's on the bonded pair in the target, # ifconfig bond0 mtu 9014 and it errors

Questions on Xen
Hi all,
I have the following questions regarding Xen hypervisor. Can you please
clarify these queries?
Does Xen follow any security model, in particular, does a Random Oracle (RO)
fit in Xen?
When there are concurrent Guest OS running on the same hardware, then there
has to be a mechanism for concurrency control and fairness, how does Xen
implement these?
Shared memory access has to make sure that

PCNS for CentOS and APC ups's
Apparently there is only an Itanium client for RHEL according to APC? I need to setup a few boxes to shut down safely and don't know if the PCNS 2.2.3 Linux version will do it? Anyone know why it needs Java as well? (Blegh)
Assuming APC is fairly popular, how do you guys shutdown your CentOS boxes with a UPS with a management card in it?
Thanks!
