btrfs vs data deduplication
Hello, I''ve stumbled upon this article: http://storagemojo.com/2011/06/27/de-dup-too-much-of-good-thing/ Reportedly Sandforce SF1200 SSD controller does internally block-level data de-duplication. This effectively removes the additional protection given by writing multiple metadata copies. This technique may be used, or can be used in the future by manufactureres of other drives too. I

ZFS on Mac - new sighting
There''s been another sighting of ZFS on Mac. The latest developer release of Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) has a dialogue box calling out the "Zettabyte File System (ZFS)" as an option. The first publication I saw this is a French website called Mac4Ever - http://mac4ever.com/ news/27485/zettabyte_sur_leopard/ I put up a Babelfish translation at my site, http://storagemojo.com/?

SMART for SATA devices ?
I noticed that the changelog for the new kernel 2.6.9-34 on the redhat enterprise watchlist states on of the fixes as; 145061 - SMART support in SATA driver (P1) Does this mean that with that kernel we should be able to interrogate SATA drives now ? Cheers, Bards.

Help! how to infer failed fileName|inode from LBA sector for ext3 on Fedora Linux??
Hi, I have an ext3 file system question for a while: How to obtain failed file (inode) from LBA section reported by Linux kernel? The following lines are a simple example: ... smb-ldap or not to smb-ldap
Hi all, We are deploying a Linux server and desktops for a customer. We will have the users and groups in LDAP on the server, and files shared via NFS. However, one never knows if Windows desktops will be needed in the future. Is it a good idea to add users with smb-ldap even if samba is not initially used, as adding the samba attributes to an existing LDAP database is painful, and the

When are Logwatch errors really errors
Hi All, I don't know enough about when errors are *really* errors. So I google a lot to read and learn. I have a few things in my Logwatch that I want to make sure I understand 1. smartd **Unmatched Entries** Problem creating device name scan list Device /dev/sda: using '-d sat' for ATA disk behind SAT layer. Device /dev/sdb: using '-d sat' for ATA disk behind SAT layer.

Vote for CentOS - AGAIN :)
The preliminary round voting is completed in the "2005 Readers' Choice Awards" at Linux Journal. CentOS was nominated in the "distribution:" category along with 18 other Linux distros ... and we finished in the top 3 (along with Ubuntu and FedoraCore). Thanks to every one who voted for CentOS. I really did not expect that we would be on the final ballot, though I am

Using a single class multiple times
Hi- Recently starting using puppet while migrating an existing messy group of systems to some nice new hardware. Things are going incredibly well, and puppet''s functioning great. Have a bit of a headache. I''d like to keep myself from duplicating lots of included classes. Lets say I have this (snippet of a) class: class dbserver { file { "/etc/my_${db}.cnf":

Converting asterisk h264 recordings
Hello, We are setting up an asterisk system for voicemail with video possibilities. We are not using the voicemail app, but rather writing our own dialplan logic. The part of recording, and replaying, the voicemail works, and we receive both an h264 and an wav-file. What I now wonder is how to convert these into one file playable by a (standard) media player. I have not found any real good

Question on failing hard drives
In my Cent OS machine, I have 3 hard drives, an 80, and two 200gig hard drives. One of the drives is obviously starting to fail, but I'm not sure which one. Is there a command line command in Linux that will check the drive integrity on all the hard drives and tell me which one is going bad? Thanks Jim

Looking for a good disk exerciser
I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T. came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I should backup my data and replace the disk (!). I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I have some time yet to take it back, but I'd

Mail slowed down to a crawl...
Been moving along just fine for a couple years now, then in the last two days, email has slowed to a crawl. Retrieving email via IMAP is very slow, progress bar in the mail client shows that it is downloading messages almost constantly, like it never closes the connection, or it?s getting the messages very slowly. The server that dovecot/postfix is on has also bogged down to a crawl. The
