3.53-pre5 released - release candidate
Hi all, I have received a fair number of bug reports over the last few weeks -- even days -- and I am therefore declaring 3.53-pre5 a release candidate for a 3.53 bug fix release. This 3.53 will not contain either of the two major features under development -- client side state (including boot-once) and gPXE integration -- since I want to avoid destabilizing the code base beyond the bug

Live migration: 2500ms downtime
Hi there, I''ve read the paper on Xen live migration, and it shows some very impressive figures, like 165ms downtime on a running web server, and 50ms for a quake3 server. I installed CentOS 5 on 2 servers, each with 2x Xeon E5335 (quad-core), 2x Intel 80003ES2LAN Gb NICs. Then I installed 2 DomUs, also with CentOS 5. One NIC is connected to the LAN (on the same switch and VLAN), the

boot 32 or 64 kernel depending on cpu
Hello, The attached l32or64.c implements a com32 module that boots two different kernels with different initrds depending on whether the cpu has long mode support or not. I stumbled upon two problems while developing it with current git version (last commit 595705ffad4f63cfeb84e9bb1243df03808c2fff). The first was that syslinux_boot_linux didn't work for me. Both the command line and initrd

[OT]: Passing password for a command on the fly
Hi, First things first, sorry for the off-topic, but I've already burned my eyes Googling and couldn't find the answer to what I need and I remembered asking here, because I'm a long time CentOS and its mailing list user. Again, my apologies. I have this command to create an FTP account: # pure-pw useradd mario -u 502 -g 502 -n 1000 -N 200 -d /home/pages/mario This command asks for

OpenSSH multiple private key question
I am using CentOS 4.5 with OpenSSH_3.9p1 and I am curious if anyone has a solution for this scenario. I have several pub/priv keys that I use for various tasks/reasons. My issue is that I want to have 2 private keys stored in ~/.ssh/ and I am not sure the best way to accomplish that. Currently I am using ssh-agent, and it works fine for manually performing tasks. I was curious if there

strverscmp, scandir, alphasort and versionsort
Hello, These are implementations of strverscmp, scandir, alphasort and versionsort, and some test cases for them. I know these aren't in POSIX, but they're useful, nonetheless, and someone else might be interested in them. logrotate and regular expressions
I am trying to use logrotate to rotate our web logs for our various vhosted sites to cut down on space and rotate out old logs that are not necessary to keep around personally. What Im curious to find out, is how supported extended regular expressions is within the logrotate.conf file. More specifically, will logrotate be smart enough to decipher the following:

VMWare vs Parallels, and Zen
I've seen several references to running VMWare under CentOS, but does anybody know how well Parallels runs under CentOS? On a related note, now that Zen is as mature as it is, are commercial VMs really much better than Zen? Miark

screen detatch
The man page for screen says that I can create a detatched screen running with a set command in it by doing this: $ screen -dm $command However, it doesn't work. Screen exits without creating the detached screen. If I say $ screen $command ...I get dropped into a screen session running $command as I would expect. What's the magic invocation I'm missing? Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5
Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]:

Raid5 issues
So when I couldn't get the raid10 to work, I decided to do raid5. Everything installed and looked good. I left it overnight to rebuild the array, and when I came in this morning, everything was frozen. Upon reboot, it said that 2 of the 4 devices for the raid5 array failed. Luckily, I didn't have any data on it, but how do I know that the same thing won't happen when I have

Maybe this is a silly question, but i have a few million files i need to delete but i can't just reformat the volume. Right now the fastest thing i can think of is nice -20 rm -Rf /folder-i-want-to-delete is there a better or faster way to do this? Thanks, Jamie
