Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash. I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

Unable to map more than 4 workspaces to keyboard shortcuts on C7.
Hi, I have a new install of c7 with the gnome desktop. I run it with 12 workspaces. Normally I create the shortcuts so that ctrl+f1 maps to workspace 1 ctrl+f2 maps to f2, etc. When I goto applications -> settings -> keyboard -> shortcuts -> navigation, I only have the ability to define "Switch to workspace" 1 through 4. There does not appear to be a way to map keyboard

Yum update wants to overwrite newer app package
This is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway (I do that - you all know... :-). Due to a bug I found in OOo 2.0, I moved to using OOo 2.3, back when I was still running CentOS 5.0. Now that I have upgraded to 5.1, yum wants to update my OOo from 2.3 BACK to 2.0. Is it possible to get yum to recognize that 2.3 is newer than 2.0, or should I just exclude OOo from the updates? Thanks.

Menu Bar KeyBoard Shortcuts.
Hello, I''m trying to use a wxMenuBar from XRC built with DialogBlocks on Windows. My first example had the menu being called from the Frame because I couldn''t figure out how to call the menu from my XRC. Shortcuts worked nicely. Example 1: menu.append(Wx::ID_EXIT, "E&xit\tAlt-X", "Quit this program") tool.append(Wx::ID_PHOTO, "&MS Picture

Problem setting keyboard shortcuts for more than 4 workspaces.
Hi, Does anyone know how to set keyboard shortcuts for more than 4 workspaces? If I goto settings -> devices -> keyboard I see "Switch to workspace {1-4}" I have virtual workspaces configured for 12. I would like to set keyboard shortcuts for all 12 workspaces. Google shows numerous solutions for ubuntu but I cannot get any of them to work on Centos 7 with gnome 3. Regards, --

All in one good for CentOS
I've asked a similar question before, but this is slightly different - is there a reasonably good, cheap all-in-one scanner-copier-printer-fax device that works well with Linux, CentOS in particular? (Last time I asked about a scanner only, although it was in the context of a Canon MP160, which I never did get to work and wound up taking back.) Thanks. mhr -------------- next part

Volume keys don't work
A side effect that I just noticed is that the volume up/down controls keys no longer seem to function at all. I reset the keyboard shortcuts to use them, but even with the whole volume control panel enabled, they don't do a thing. What did I break? I don't remember seeing this one before.... mhr

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). Here's what happened most recently: # mount /dev/hdc /mnt mount: block

OT: Slow browsers or slow connections?
I have AT&T (formerly SBC) DSL for my primary internet connection here, and tonight it has been exceptionally, extraordinarily S - L - O - W.... Pages that normally load in, at most, seconds, are taking several minutes to locate, even common, frequent access pages like Google, Gmail, etc. I called AT&T, of course, and all they know about is IE, which, as you can probably guess, I rarely

CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 issue - no keyboard after reboot
I did this twice now, although the first couple of builds seemed to work ok, they just weren't configured quite right. On my third and fourth builds of the 42.0.8 kernel rpm, when booting, kudzu came up and ran, but the keyboard was somehow not recognized and I had to reboot using the mouse on the login screen (no text appears no matter what I type). I'm using the rpm build strategy from

Severe VMware slowdown
In the last few days, I have noticed a drastic slowdown in my VMware Windows guest OS.. I recently bit the bullet and upgraded it from XP SP1 to SP2, and that seemed to work fine for quite a few days. The two major changes I made to the system recently were: 1) The most recent update from CentOS (can't remember which one, but it was within the last two weekd for 5.0). 2) Adding another VM

Keyboard problem
I've had a Logitech cordless desktop on my primary desktop for the last few years, and every once in a while the number pad would just "go out" - the <enter> key and num-lock would still work, but of all the others would do nothing except the 5, which would pop-up a subwindow in some app on the screen that didn't have the focus. I thought this was aproblem with the

USB printer goes into disconnected state when low-power mode enabled
I've mentioned this before, here, but with a laser printer connected via the lp0 port. I have a new laser printer, a Brother HL2140, that normally works just fine when installed using the CUPS interface per OpenPrinting's instructions (with one minor modification I had to add because the base driver without the CUPS installation did not work. Every so often, which actually appears to be

Can't umount flash drive because an application has it locked
This occasionally happens to me when I've been editing an OOo document that resides on a flash drive I use with one of my laptops. I've tried poking around in ps to find out which process has the drive locked, and I can't figure it out. Nothing directly refers to the flash drive except one of the hald processes, and it's just scanning the drive (I tried killing that and it made

Strange behavior from OO Writer
I just had the strangest experience I can remember since I ran Windowsas my base OS.... Yesterday I was editing a file in the OO Writer (word processor). Today, it will not open. I copied it to a new file, and it opened fine. I edited it, updated it and closed it. Then I tried deleting the original file and copying the new one to the old name. Won't open. Renamed again, and it opens

VMWare hiccup on CentOS 5, 2.6.18-8.1.8
For reasons which escape me, my VMWare Server, which was working perfectly a week ago when I shut down my machine for vacation, no loner comes up with the formerly working Windows XP system - it just stays in the small window where it normally boots and does nothing. The vmware serverd log shows nothing particularly interesting, and I have reconfigured the vmware twice to try and fix this (which

Kernel build warning
What does this mean: WARNING: "autofs_kill_sb" [fs/autofs/autofs.ko] undefined!
