Crontab Nobody
I have a crontab for Nobody. I tried to delete it in a root kcron, which I'm
sure is how I dealt with this in the past, but it seems impossible to delete.
Should I delete the file /var/spool/cron/nobody? It is owned root:root, perms
600.

Security advice, please
I run chkrootkit daily. For the first time I've got reports of a problem -
Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 1008)
The page http://fatpenguinblog.com/scott-rippee/checking-bindshell-infected-
ports-1008/ suggests that this might be a false positive, so I ran 'netstat -
tanup' but unlike the report, it wasn't famd on the port. It was

What's special about port 19842?
I've had umpteen IPs knocking on this door yesterday. The router blocked
them, so it's not a problem, but why that port?

Where is gpg-agent?
The only obstacle now to running this box as the mail server is that I do read
and send mail on it occasionally, while working on something. I need
gpg-agent, but can't find how to get it. Is it merged into another package,
or do I simply have to look at other repositories?

Copy of own messages
For some reason I'm no longer seeing copies of my own messages. I've checked
http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos and the preferences setting
is still fine. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks

Getting printer to work under 5.2
Hi
I have a standard hplip install on my 5.2 box installed from the repos
(it originally was installed from the 5.1 disks and followed any upgrade
that may have occured in the transition to 5.2). My printer is a HP
Deskjet F4180 connecting via USB.
I can't get the printer to work. Documents manually printed from the
file menu in OO.o 2.3 stagnate in a print queue, while the print icon

Another security question
I would like to be able to check my bank account while we are on holiday. I
know the bank's site is encrypted from the start - the login page is https and
Verisign-trust encrypted - but is there any risk in using public wireless
networks for jobs like this? It sounds secure enough, but maybe I'm
paranoid....

Web server in a sandbox?
I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I
don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have
spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. I
found this article:

Would it be straightforward to follow those

chkrootkit and 4.10-prerelease issues?
Has anyone else seen chkrootkit (version 0.43) on 4.10-prerelease or
later report chfn, chsh, and date as infected?
I built world yesterday, and my nightly chkrootkit reports this on run.
I've replaced the binaries with their 4.9 equivalents, and things don't
report as infected. I upgrade the 4.9 machine to 4.10, and chkrootkit
reports them as infected again.
Is this similar to the

Creating a Roaming imap account
This (CentOS5.1) box is my new imap server. Using
system-config-security-level I opened port 143 tcp, and mail is readable
throughout the LAN. I want a Roaming account on my laptop so that I can read
mail while away from home. I have set up the account in kmail, and I know
that that part is correct, as it worked on my old, less-secured, imap server.
However, I haven't been able so far

chfn, date, chsh INFECTED according to chkrootkit
I ran chkrootkit ( v. chkrootkit-0.43 ) earlier and
noticed that chfn, date, and chsh showed as being
infected. I remember reading post from the past that
right now chkrootkit is giving alot of false
positives, so I suspected that these 3 binaries are
not bad.
However, to be on the safe side, I deleted the 3
binaries, removed /usr/src and did a 'make world' to
4.10-STABLE.
But, chfn,

[solution] chkrootkit reports infected files
Hey all,
I've submitted a fix for chkrootkit port, to solve the
false positives on FreeBSD 5 and higher:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=55919
The topic, btw, should be "Teach security/chkrootkit
about FreeBSD 5", but it's not my first typo today.
Maintainer, please approve.
Authors, please see if you can include the changes.
I also fixed a minor bug in chk_vdir.

Can't send mail through new server
I thought I had just about got the old server to the point of being
switched off. I have been reading from the dovecot server for a couple

well - but I couldn't get anything out. I got:
