reading old dump backups from 2009
I have and old dump format backup done under fedora 7 which is stored on
disk and has an sha256sum file that indicates there are no data errors
in the backup file.? When I try to read the file with restore under
CentOS 6,? I get the following error:
cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 6.10 (Final)
restore tvf u1_l0_04-29-09_md1.dump Verify tape and initialize maps

how to properly change the timezone
Hi,
I have a Centos 5.5 server with no GUI installed. I have several times
changed the timezone by copying the correct file to /etc/localtime,
however something keeps changing it back. I'm not sure if this is a yum
update or what. Without installing the graphical tools, how can I
update the timezone in such a way that the /etc/localtime file won't
keep getting clobbered.
Thank

Unable to Install Ocfs2 in Oracle Linux 5 Machine.
Hi,
I was trying to install OCFS 2 in my Oracle Linux 5 Machine.
I created a mount point for cluster file system:
# mkdir /u02
My Kernel version is :
# uname -r
2.6.18-308.4.1.0.1.el5xen
I am downloading the appropriate version of the kernel module from this
location:
https://oss.oracle.com/projects/ocfs2/files/RedHat/RHEL5/x86_64/1.4.10-1/2.6.18-308.4.1.el5/

Swap space for kvm virtual host
I have a kvm virtual host running on what will become CentOS 6 with 12GB
of memory and a Quad Xeon X5560 2.8Ghz . The store for virtual
machines will be a software raid 6 array of 6 disks with an LVM layered
on top. I'm not initially planning any major overcommitment of
resources, though there could be a need for some overcommitment with a
light workload on the guests.

Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead
I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose.
so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box
has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates
come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE.
grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it
actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've

Removing old kernels
I have the following kernels on my /boot:
2.6.18-128.1.6
2.6.18-92.1.18
2.6.18-92.1.22
I'm low on /boot space and need to remove the oldest version. It
appears that I cannot use yum to remove since all of the versions are
the same (only the release is different). I believe that I can use rpm
to remove the old version, but I also need to remove them from the
grub.conf. Any other

Centos on Dell XPS15
I have a Dell XPS 13 9360, though I am running ubuntu 18.04 on it.? I
remember there being a patch to the mainline kernel which addressed many
of the wireless problems. I'm not sure if those changes ever made it
into the CentOS kernels.
Some of the Dell XPS 13's had removable ethernet interfaces while most
of the more recent ones had the killer interfaces on the motherboard.?

question about software Raid 1
Does software raid 1 compare checksums or otherwise verify that the same
bits are coming from both disks during reads? What I'm interested in,
is whether bit errors that were somehow undetected by the hardware would
be detected by the raid 1 software.
Thanks,
Nataraj

Redhat Virtualization
What are the differences between the Redhat virtualization product and
the kvm virtualization that is currently included with Redhat/CentOS?
If I don't want to run the standalone hypervisor or the windows based
management interface (Is this worth considering?), are there any
advantages to the virtualization product over running kvm on CentOS? It
is my understanding that the windows

Not able to run kernel-xen with megasr module :/
I've managed to install CentOS 5.1 on S5000PAL
with fakeraid Intel Embedded Raid Technology II
Raid1 (LSI chipset) with some help of kickstart
declaration 'driverdisk --source=http://.../driver.img'
Then I've had some problems with yum update - new kernel
didn't know about megasr.ko. I've solved it with commands:
cd /lib/modules/
cp 2.6.18-53.el5PAE/updates/megasr.ko
