SCSI schizophrenia
OK - I only have one tape drive but a real problem these days backing

Disable specific LUN on a SCSI bus
Hi all,
do you know if there is a way at boot time do disable specific LUN's on a SCSI
bus of a particular controller?
I'm trying to write an udev rule, but it seems that the system ignores the
"vendor" model/name of the controller...
For example: I want to disable /dev/sdb; so I gather some information with
udevinfo -a -p /sys/block/sdb and I try to use them to write

Make sshd log IP addresses, not hostnames
Can I adjust the ssh daemon to log IP addresses instead of hostnames?
I assume this situation is feasible...
* 10.10.10.10 attempts to ssh to the server
* reverse dns resolves to "somehost.domain.com"
* ssh daemon logs "somehost.domain.com" in messages
* foward dns on "somehost.domain.com" resolves to 10.10.10.20
Thus it causes some of my scripts a problem if the

Tape drive problems
Hi,
Hi,
I have been googling, and can't find anything that will help me:
mt -f /dev/st0 status
/dev/st0: No such device or address
Any suggestion?
I am using CentOS 3 [RHEL ES3 without the licenses]
The tape drive is recognized at boot [from dmesg]

SCSI drives and Centos 7
Everyone,
about 4 years ago, I tried to install CentOS 6 on a Supermicro server
with SCSI drives using a LSI raid system. I could never figure out or
find a way to make the installation disc of Centos 6 identify the SCSI
drives. The installation disc for Centos 5 identified the SCSI drives
without a problem. I finally gave up on Centos 6 and installed Centos 5
and the system has worked very

5.1 Upgrade Not Working?
So both "yum upgrade" and "yum update" now are complete and there's no
new packages. However, when I attempt to check my version, I'm still
showing 5.
# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5 (Final)
I remember seeing 5.1 repositories being access for the upgrades. Is
it possible my system did not upgrade?

Changing ext3 Partition Size
I have an ext3 partition from our SAN. The size was increased.
I am attempting to re-size this specific ext3 partition, obviously.
I unmount the partition, run fdisk, change the cyls, and save...

The kernel still uses the old table.
The new table will be used at the next reboot.
And that is the message that I

How to move my MBR
I removed an ATA drive (/home) for a new SATA and my system would not
boot. I'm guessing that it put the MBR on that drive instead of the
drive that holds the / partition. What's the best way confirm where
the MBR resides and, after I verify that's my problem, how I can move
(or make a copy) onto a different drive?
Thanks,

Megraid SAS virtual disc question
Hi,
Is there something OS related (CentOS 5.1) I would need to do for a CLI created array to become visible to the OS after the array is created and initialized? I don't want to reboot...
Thanks!

how to rescan serial ports without reboot
Hi all,
I hope this is possible. I have a server, with a network switch
attached to the serial port, and I want to rescan the serial port
(/dev/tty) to see if it picks it up? I'd prefer not to reboot the
server if at all possible.
dmesg reports ttyS0 as the active port:
[root at zabackup01 ~]# dmesg |grep tty
Bootdata ok (command line is ro root=/dev/System/root rhgb quiet xencons=tty6)

Xen on Dell PowerEdge 1850 with Perc 4e/Si controller
Hello,
I am having issues making my box boot with Xen. I am
working with linux-2.6.16.28-xen on a gentoo box. The
server is Dell PowerEdge 1850 with Perc 4e/Si, FW
521X. When dom0 reaches the point of scanning the SCSI
controllers, it hangs in a loop
aic7xxx_dev_reset_returns 0x2002. My regular (non-xen)
kernels come up fine with detecting my adaptec scsi
controller.
Had anyone had the same

Rescan for new geometry without reboot?
Hello,
We just had our servers fitted with more disks. Most of the disks are
growing existing RAID 1+0 channels, some are in new channels.
Controllers and disks support live installation.
I'd like to avoid a reboot just to let the system find that the disks
are larger.
All I can find so far suggests that its possible to rescan the disks,
and even find the new geometry (e.g.

My G729 problem re-visited
Ok, I built a test system to duplicate my problem and provide myself
a platform that I can mess around with to try and break any features.
My problem is G729 pass-through from a gateway to a phone. I think
I even have transcoding working, which makes me more confused on
what's wrong with my pass-through. It must be a configuration issue.

sdc1 without the sdc
So I'm working with the iSCSI Initiator and an EqualLogic SAN. I'm
not sure when this might have happened, but it appears that the
/dev/sdc device is missing, yet the /dev/sdc1 partition exists AND is
mountable. Is there a method to re-create the /dev/sdc device? I
cannot dd or fdisk it, obviously, but I can mount the /dev/sdc1
partition and it works just fine. Not having the /dev/sdc

Mapping to Samba
Using GUI methods (read: easy for most users), is there a way to map
to a Samba share and have it accessible to all applications? Going
through Nautilus I'm able to create a link to the shares, but they're
not accessible from many applications. And, obviously, this is going
to be something that changes per user (different mappings, different
credentials, etc), so I can't use a static
