upgrading storage on hardware RAID 10 possible?
Hi all, Can anyone please tell me, from experience, if it's possible to upgrade the hard drives in a RAID 10 system from 250GB HDD's to 500GB / 750GB HDD's, while the server is running? The server runs CentOS 5.5 x64. Our hardware vendors simply always say no, so we never actually tried doing this, and when a client needed an upgrade like this we had to build a new server with the

can I use CentOS as a antivirus / spam filter / HTTP AV gateway?
Hi all I've been thinking about using CentOS on a Dell R200 server and turn it into a firewall / network monitor / traffic shaper in our datacentre, instead of using a dedicated firewall device. One of the devices that I have been looking at, with my limited budget, is the D-Link DFL 860 - http://www.netdefend.eu/Product.aspx?m=15&ref=DFL-860 It provides AV, SPI, VPN, DOS, P2P, etc

using CentOS as an iSCSI server?
Has anyone succesfully setup, and used CentOS as an iSCSI server? I'm trying to setup a server with 4x500GB HDD's, setup in RAID 10 to act as an iSCSI server for a virtualization project, but I can't find a decent howto on how to setup an iSCSI server using CentOS. I would like to setup something like Openfiler, but we also need todo some other stuff that OpenFiler doesn't

What NAS device(s) do you use? And why?
If you use any NAS (or a SAN) devices, what do you use? And I''m referring more to larger scale network storage than your home PC or home theater system. We''ve had very good experiences with our NetGear ReadyNAS devices but I''m in the market for something new. The NetGear''s aren''t the cheapest ones around but they do what it says on the box. 2way authentication for SSH?
Hi, Does anyone know of a stable / working "2way authentication" system for SSH, and even web authentication services? Most of the banks in South Africa have a system that, when you want to make a payment, they send you an SMS and you need to verify the action with a secret code which was SMS'd to you. gmail also has this. Does anyone know of a "universal" plugin /

using a Laptop as a KVM console?
Hi all, Has anyone seen something like this before: I want to use a laptop as a KVM console. Basically when a technician goes to one of our datacentres, or clients he has to look for a free LCD, keyboard & mouse to connect to a server (no network access, reinstall, troubleshoot failed kernel / HDD, etc). And then hopefully there's an open power socker in that cabinet. So I'm

Re: unable to access Linux HVM via xm console - Couldnot read tty from store: No such file or directory
HVM = fully virtualized. The question is, why are you using fully virtualized domUs? Hi, What is the preferred OS to use with XEN, as the dom0 host? We primarely us CentOS (currently 5.6) but it seems that the native XEN that comes with CentOS is a bit behind. correct steps to add XEN bridge to Debian squeeze?
Hi all, Does anyone know what the correct steps are to add a XEN bridge, let''s say xenbr0 to Debian Squeeze? I have added the following to /etc/network/interfaces # XEN Bridge auto xenbr0 iface xenbr0 inet manual bridge ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 And then rebooted the server but brctl show still shows eth0 as bridge: newusaxen:~# brctl

is Intel VT-d "really" necessary?
Hi all, I'm just curios and would like some input from the community on this one. We're busy budgeting for a couple of new servers and I thought it would be good to try out the Core i7 CPU's, but see the majority of them don't offer VT-d, but just VT-x. Looking at the LGA1366 range, only the "Intel lga1366 i7 980XE" (from the list of what our suppliers stock) have VT-d,

how do I find out which nameserver returns a DNS query?
Hi all If I do a "dig mydomain.co.za" from a Linux server, how do I know which DNS nameserver returns the queries? I seem to have a faulty DNS server, but can't see which one, so I want to find out which nameserver (if there's 4 - ns1.myserver, ns2.myserver, ns3.myserver & ns4.myserver) returns the queries? -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers CEO, SoftDux Web:

CentOS 6 domU on Debian 6 dom0 not working
Hi all, Has anyone managed to get CentOS 6 domU (i.e. guest) working on a Debian 6 do0? Both OS''s are 32bit and I''m running XEN 4.0.1 with HVM support. A CentOS 5.6 domU works fine on this very same server though. When I start CentOS 6, I get the following error: newusaxen:~# xm create -c /xen/genocide.cfg Using config file "/xen/genocide.cfg". xenconsole: Could

eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?
HI All, I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice 1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS. or 2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box? I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music,

Building a Back Blaze style POD
Hi All, I am about to embark on a project that deals with allowing information archival, over time and seeing change over time as well. I can explain it a lot better, but I would certainly talk your ear off. I really don't have a lot of money to throw at the initial concept, but I have some. This device will host all of the operations for the first few months until I can afford to build a
