portmap not answering
CentOS 5 updated, Xen host.
The portmap on this machine is somehow "stuck" and I can't figure out why.
I enabled it to be able to mount a remote nfs share. The first hurdle was
that "portmap" didn't appear in the chkconfig list, it was installed with
the initial packages but not added to chkconfig. Took me a while to figure
this out. Adding and starting it up is no

How can I disable sound?
I usually don't setup any GUI on my Linux systems. Yesterday I installed
with X and Gnome on a spare system for some testing and hit a problem.
Right after login the system freezes. The system froze already earlier
when I opted to test the sound card on the Welcome screen and when I login
with the alternative login choice xterm and shut down it freezes when

xenbr0 isn't created anymore
Somehow I managed to disable the creation of xenbr0 on boot-up of the host
system. CentOS 5 with standard CentOS Xen.
I changed all Xen VMs to use xenbr0 instead of virbr0 and disabled
virtlibd. Works fine. But when I later restarted the machine I found that
all networking for guests had gone. On inspection there's no xenbr0
created anymore. I can get it up by stopping network (or eth0)

[PATCH v2] v2v: linux: use NEVR for querying RPM packages (RHBZ#1669395)
Use NEVR when querying RPM for the list of files of a package, instead
of ENVR. Also, use the epoch only when non-zero, and version of RPM
supports it.
The approach is basically copied from what supermin does in its RPM
package handler.

packages (binary) update best practice
Hi all,
I have update recently to freebsd 9.1 via freebsd-update and I was quite
happy with the process and the instructions on freebsd-handbook, I think
well documented.
But I would like to understand what is the best practice to update the
ports too as I used the package tools (pkg_add -r) to add few package to
the base install. Keeping in mind my server have disk space constrain

Sorting of passwd/group files
Is there a program on CentOS which will sort my passwd/group etc. files by
username or uid/gid? On Suse I can do this with a sysconfig switch and
Suseconfig, is there something similar on RH-based systems?

Rake migration error
Hi,
I am constantly getting an error when I use the rake command to do a
migration or even use drop, this happened after I installed some
plugins such as paperclip and seed-fu.
The error is:
rake aborted!
uninitialized constant PKG_NAME
/var/www/html/quote/Rakefile:10
The Rakefile looks like this:

chkconfig question
In the docs for chkconfig it says:
<startlevellist> is a list of the runlevels for which the service
should be started by default. Only services which are really required
for a vital system should define runlevels here. If no runlevels are
defined, a - should be used in place of the runlevels list.
and then:
More commonly, the service is off by default on all runlevels, which

CentOS 6.0 chkconfig strange behavior
Hi,
I'm noticing some strangeness with chkconfig on CentOS 6.0 and was looking for a bit of advice.
It appears that chkconfig is re sequencing or re ordering the start priority of various services when turning on a service using chkconfig.
Example is the network service. Under normal circumstances network is set to start at S10. However when I add something like snmpd and invoke chkconfig

updating to 5.2 from local repo
This is my first major version update after using a local repo.
It seems that before I can "yum update" I have to fetch the complete new
5.2 base? Is this correct?
When I run yum update it now fails with various strange dependency errors
although all the updates are synced. When I change to using the original
repo file it wants to download many many more and shows a lot of files
that

Package chkconfig-1.3.49.3-2.el6_4.1.x86_64.rpm is not signed
Hello,
gpk-update-viewer on my CentOS 6 desktop gives me an error about
untrusted updates. When running yum update from a terminal I get the
following error:
Package chkconfig-1.3.49.3-2.el6_4.1.x86_64.rpm is not signed
No other packages seem to be affected so for now I updated excuding
chkconfig and ntsysv.
Regards,
Leonard.

Quation about CentOS 4 xenU kernel
I converted a physical maschine running CentOS 4.6 to a Xen VM on a CentOS
5 host. Almost everything was running when I decided to rsync /lib and
/usr a while later in order to get updated files and get the one or two
non-working programs to work. There are differences because of the xenU
kernel I didn't think about. I forgot to exclude rpm database and
/lib/modules.
Because the synced

chkconfig madness CentOS 7
I have a couple of in use C7 boxes that were built with ntsysv and
chkconfig for some old packages that needed to start using init.d. (The
person setting these up didn't know about systemd creating service files
for older packages, so we're stuck with these as-is. Here's my problem:

Installing old Suse as fully virtualized guest: problem with install source
Using CentOS 5.1 with Xen 3.2.
I'm trying to install a fully virtualized system for the first time and
doing this with an old Suse 9.0 (this probably would run paravirtualized,
maybe it won't run, anyway, because of hardware problems).
I start with virt-manager and after choosing "fully virtualized" it
presents me two options for install media: iso image and CD-ROM or DVD,
