Installing Centos 5 on one system and moving the HD to another....
I have a bug report in (0002288) on an install failure on my decTOPs
(Centos 4.5 installed on them).
I have tried a lot of combinations and it is getting tiring.
What what happen, or rather how do I get the following to work:
Put my HD into a computer (Compaq SSF that I have installed Centos 5 on
with no trouble), install Centos 5, move the HD to the decTOP.
Different Video card.
No PS/2

Back to my Xwindows kernel panic
I have a newly built drive with 5.2 fresh install (that I will be
cloning shortly) in my DECtop and it is failing with X the same way the
upgrade from 5.1 drive did (not too supprising there).
In 5.1 X worked. I could startx from init 3 and get into GNOME. Also
VNC into the box and have a GNOME screen. With 5.2, I get a kernel
panic. Well I guess it is a kernel panic because once I run

Centos on a Flash drive and Micro drive
I am considering putting together a 'micro server' that I can easily
travel with. I am seriously considering the decTOP, as at $99 (plus the
cost of a 256MB SIMM) is amazingly priced.
But I want to run on batteries, so trash a real hard drive. I have a
couple of IDE to Compact flash adapters that support 2 flash cards. So
I was considering a 4Gb (or even 2Gb) cheap real fash card

INIT 5 and system is gone
I had been running a system on Centos 5.1 at INIT 3. I did the upgrade
to Centos 5.2 with the aid of the powernowk8 patch.
Previously I would VNC into the unit when I needed to do admin stuff
with a GUI. Well I noticed that I was NOT getting GNOME via VNC since
the upgrade (worked before just fine with 5.1). So I tried an INIT 5
from the command line (always worked before), but the system

Centos on the decTOP?
https://store.dataevolution.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DT%2D7001
For $99 a nice little system with AMD Geode GX500 128Mb memory and 10Gb
disk. Upgrade to 256Mb and off we go?
Replace the hard drive with a Flash card, and run off a battery pack?
Add Bluetooth (lower power draw that 802.11) and run IP over it to your
desktop.... It does have ethernet, so a crossover cable works too.

simplest boot to set hardware clock
Well I found a significant source of my problems with these decTOPs.
Hardware clock is back at Jan 2006. And many things fail.....
And there is no way to access the bios from a boot sequence.
On the one I discovered this, I watched everything get errors during all
the reboots a Trixbox install goes through.
Once I was allowed to log in, I ended using
date
to set the system date and

What is eating my memory?
The tail of two systems and one hard drive.
I install centos 5 on a HD while it is in a Compaq with 256Mb memory.
After install, i am in graphics mode (Gnome) and top reports not quite
all 256Mb used.
Then I move the HD to a decTOP with 512Mb memory. I am running
non-graphics (init 3). I ssh into the unit and top reports not quite
all of that used.....
So what ate up more than 256Mb

Recommend a mini or nano ITX system for Centos
I am looking into convising the boss to get me a mini-itx system to
replace my workhorse notebook (I have to have a corp notebook and I can
remote terminal into a Centos server from it).
So I have been playing with one mini-itx system (the decTOP) and am
looking at my options.
I want a fast processor, 1Gb memory, LAN, 4USB, VGA. Wireless and
bluetooth optional USB dongles along with a

decTOP - Centos install fails but DSL frugal install worked
I got 4 of those decTOPs
(http://www.dataevolution.com/dectop%20info%202.htm) and upgraded the
memory to 512Mb.
I cannot get Centos 5.0 to install.
I have the keyboard mouse attached to an ATEN USB-PS/2 adapter (probably
should try without this).
I have a USB DVD/CDRW drive.
The install CD boots just fine. But then the install says, "No CD" and
takes me to Askmethods.
So I use

Centos 5 install failed. Could it be the USB ethernet?
I am installing Centos on a decTOP via ftp, that comes with a generic
USB ethernet.
I chose the last listed driver some USB ethernet, and the install took off.
Got all the way to selecting packages and then it failed.
I don't have any SCP stuff to copy the debug too, but it LOOKS like the
ftp is failing now. As if the installer lost track of the driver I
selected?
Well I will try a

Failed to enable keyboard
I have a set of systems that I have to build that cannot be booted from
CD. So I put the drive in another system, do the install, move the
drive, and fix the video with system-config-display.
But seems perhaps there is another (small) problem. The build system
has a PS/2 keyboard interface (and mouse). The target system has NO
PS/2 interfaces. Only USB is available.
So at boot I get the

Centos 5 install failed compounded - no CD?
First off, there is no access into the bios on this unit It will boot
from the hard drive or a USB CD.
I have a USB DVD/CDRW. The system will boot from it.
But if I just press enter to install off the CD, I end up at the
askmethod menu.
I press the local CD option and am told, no CD.
Help?

non-graphics install or fix xorg.conf?
Trying the to install on the OQO, and hitting up against one problem I
see a lot in the comments about installing various distros on it. That
is its screen size.
So I could install using the text installation except...
What is the command line for text install and askmethod so I can use
HTTP to access my local repo? What do I add to 'linux askmethod'? And
if I go the text install

ARGH!!! Instal fails at drive format time
Got all the way through the selection of packages. All those time
consuming tasks and the install got to formating the drive and crashed
on a format error!
Since I know exactly how I want to lay out the partitions, is there a
way I can boot from CD, and get into Disk Druid to set the partitions
and do the formating. Then when I come to the install just select to
keep the drive how it is?

Install from a USB CDrom?
OK, this is getting ridiculous.
A relatively new HP NC4010 (1 year old). A maybe not the newest
Storix USB CD/R-DVD drive.
Of course the HP has no problem booting up off the CDrom. But then I
get that blasted dialog of where are my install.
So I go through the list and find a USB storage driver.
It doesn't help.
I do have a USB 2.5" drive case that I can put a drive in with the

What happened to the RescueCD?
Hey folks -
So what happened to the RescueCD ISO?... i'm not finding it under the
...centos/4.4/isos/ dir, as i believe it generally has been previously.
At my office, we have a local mirror, and i've always just burned the
RescueCD ISO and booted with that. At the prompt i supply "linux
askmethod" and then later reference our local mirror to do an install or
upgrade. The

CentOS 5.2 kernel [2.6.18-92.1.1.el5] crashes on dual-PIII Compaq ProLiant 3000
After yum upgrade, the new CentOS5 kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-92.1.1.el5.i686 ]
crashes each time early in boot process on Compaq ProLiant 3000
with dual Pentium3 CPU (600 MHz, CPU0: Intel Pentium III (Katmai) stepping 03, CPU1 the same).
I get kernel panic at powernowk8_init+0x05e/0x1c3.
The previous kernel [ kernel-2.6.18-53.1.21.el5.i686 ] seems to work fine.
I am wondering if anyone has met
