Mabe OT? What managed switch is best for VoIP application?
My Trendnet 26 port managed switch gave up on me so I'm shopping for a
new switch. I learned the hard way NOT to trust marketing material from
anyone so now I'm asking the list: what am I looking for in a managed,
VoIP switch?
P.S: For those that don't understand WHY I can't trust marketing
material, let me tell you something about the Trendnet switch that's
fast becoming

Failing Network card
Everyone,
Most of the time I am over my head in trying to troubleshoot problems.
However, after reading manuals, man pages, and getting advice from this
list I have been able to work my way through difficulties, and at the
end, I usually have a better understanding of what 'is going on'. I can
only hope this method will work on this problem too.
I have been chasing a problem with a

[OT] switches
If your phones support PoE,
I have had huge success with Zyxel:
http://www.amazon.com/ZyXEL-ES1100-16P-16-Port-Ethernet-Unmanaged/dp/B00
5GRETMM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426296572&sr=8-3&keywords=zyxel+poe
If you want to go even cheaper, I have successfully used these as well:

Problems with building a complete kernel
I have a plain vanilla Centos source (not 100% sure where we got it
from), but I can't seem to get a build that installs correctly.
I tried the method described at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, but rpm doesn't like the
output file, and even if I install it with -F, nothing seems to happen -
no new kernel, now initrd, nothing.
When I tried following the directions in the

Routers that do not show external IPs...
I have a customer that has a Trendnet TEW-435BRM router which has the
bad habit of rewriting all external connections so the Asterisk server
only sees the IP address of the router itself. Up to today this has not
been a problem since all extensions are on the local network but now
they want to have a couple external IP phones (SIP).
I opened up the ports on the router and my phone can register.

How is this possible?
As an experiment, I am attempting to build a more recent version of
GNOME than 2.16.0 on CentOS 5.1. I've tried both garnome and jhbuild,
and neither one works quite right. Jhbuild blows out looking for a
dbus-glib-1 revision >= 0/74 (the release rev is 0.70), so I
downloaded that and tried to build it. This results in the following
error:
gcc -g -O2 -Wall -Wchar-subscripts

DVI + VGA?
I have an LCD monitor with both VGA and DVI connectors on it, and a
video card to match (both connectors). If I want to switch from the
VGA (currently in use) to the DVI, do I need to do anything special
other than switch wires? I didn't see anything in google that was
helpful (though I may not have used a smashing search...).
Thanks.

Time to sync (NOT a complaint)
Is anyone else seeing this situation?
I subscribe to the announce digest, and for the last four or five
announcements that contained updates to CentOS 5, I've been unable to
get a successful run of yum update for as much as 24 hours after the
announcement. The last time around, I tried at about 5 hours after
the posting, and yum couldn't see anything. I ran yum clean all, and
yum update

Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.3 - slightly OT
I've noticed recently that the latest version of Adobe's Acrobat
Reader (9.3) has a really annoying tendency to stop for 30-60 seconds
shortly after it starts up to read/display a PDF file. I don't see
this on my Windows copies, just on CentOS.
Anyone know what's up with that?
Thanks.

Extended characters not working on CentOS
A friend of mine here at work pointed me at this web page
www.fhlcell.org where there are a lot of Chinese characters on the
page.
Interestingly enough, on my CentOS 5.2 system, with both Seamoneky
1.1.11 and Firefox 3.0, we were unable to get the characters to
display properly (they showed up as the little four number boxes
instead).
However, on his Ubuntu system, using Firefox, they displayed

Curiosity when installing CentOS 5.1 in addition to W98 & WXP
I got half way through an installation of CentOS on a box that has
Window$ 98 in the first partition and Window$ XP in the second, where
CentOS was designated for partitions 3 (/boot - 128MB) and 4 (/) and
had some strange results.
During the install, I changed the default OS to boot to Window$
(because I rarely use this machine, but others who don't have a clue
use Wxx), but then while the

Firewall for virtual machines
I realize I'm not getting a lot of questions answered here lately, and
I'm going to presume that this is for legitimate reasons (i.e., people
don't know or are too busy to think about it), not because they seem
stupid (if they do, please tell me, on the list or privately).
I run Windows as a VMWare guest on top of my CentOS host, and I
generally have not used a firewall on the guest.

OT? Creative Zen player not registering as a USB device
I plugged my son's new (Christmas) Zen V player into my CentOS 5.1 box and
it doesn't register as a device that the system can see or mount.
If I lsusb, it shows up as bus 2, device 8, but there is no corresponding
/dev/??? device for it, so the system can't get at it.
(I tried my flash drive in the same USB port and it works fine, so it's not
the hardware.)

Live CD?
I just used a Live CD for the first time today, in part to show what
CentOS can do for a co-worker who is looking at using it at work and
home, but I got the strangest result.
We booted the CD and let the centos user log in. It took a really
long time to load the desktop and there were no panels, so the only
things we could do were browse the computer, CD, home, file system,
keyboard (sort of)

Audio issue(s)
I just bought a new (refurbished) Everexe StepNote laptop with a VIA
C7-M CPU and a VIA chipset, installed CentOS 5.4 on it and the audio
is not working.
I looked around for a sound driver for the VIA vt1708/a, which is what
it claims to have (see below), but that didn't work either.
Any pointers as to what I'm missing?

Widescreen monitor won't configure to a wide screen
I just put a 1680x1050 LCD monitor on my home system, and I went into
system-config-display to configure it as such, and it just won't take.
I had to tweak some of the settings by hand, but when I log out, I get
the wide screen for both the Nvidia driver splash screen and the login
screen.
But, when I log in, It jumps back to 1280x1024 and refuses to run in
wide screen mode.
