mdadm on reboot
Hi, I'm in the process of trying mdadm for the first time I've been trying stuff out of tutorials, etc. At this point I know how to create stripes, and mirrors. My stripe is automatically restarting on reboot, but the degraded mirror isn't. -- Drew Einhorn -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

LSI Logic MegaRAID 8480 Storage controller
I have LSI Logic MegaRAID 8480 Storage controller I am having trouble reconfigure one of the hardware raid devices It is configured with 4 hardware raid logical volumes on /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd. I am in the middle of rebuilding the system, ?and at this point I am only using one of the volumes, /dev/sda /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, and /dev/sdd are all 2 drive raid1 mirrors I will be

New RadRails tutorial using AWDWR book
Hello there, I am basically a J2EE refugee fascinated with Rails. I have been using the Spring framework (a lightweight J2EE java framework with some special characteristics) but I am so impressed with RoR that I am porting over many applications. In order to "dive into Rails", of course the second thing to do was get myself an IDE, and since I''ve been using Eclipse for the

EVMS?
EVMS Enterprise Volume Management System sounds interesting, looks like it supported CentOS4, but not CentOS5. But maybe I'm not looking in the right places. -- Drew Einhorn -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Software RAID setup ideas and an apology.
The apology first. If I've offended anyone, or just annoyed anyone, I apologize for that. I sometimes can go 'off the deep end' when I'm being sarcastic (an old habit from my news.admin days when I ran a Usenet site in the early 90's), and I'll try to not go into news.admin mode here in the future. Now, the question. I have a few ideas about how to do this, but am

"Shortcut" for creating a software RAID 60?

FWIW, what I've done in the past is build the raid 6's with mdraid, then use LVM to stripe them

Software versus hardware RAID performance.
With the Dell OpenManage question on my mind (and having seen it answered very well), I was reminded of an interesting and a little surprising thing I saw yesterday. I upgraded a PowerEdge 2850 from CentOS4 to Fedora Core 5 (keeping everything updated for GNUradio to run on CentOS 4 became more of a job that it should have) for our pulsar data processing machine (it has a GNUradio Universal

question about software Raid 1
Does software raid 1 compare checksums or otherwise verify that the same bits are coming from both disks during reads? What I'm interested in, is whether bit errors that were somehow undetected by the hardware would be detected by the raid 1 software. Thanks, Nataraj

Generic RAID question
Does anyone know if using unequal drives in a RAID 0 is possible? I was looking to set up a software stripe but if I have two volumes of unequal size I wish to stripe over, will the OS try and work around this by say only using as much space as is available on the smallest drive or is there anyway it will use all of both drives? Does it have to be a perfect block/byte balance across drives?

RAID-10 vs Nested (RAID-0 on 2x RAID-1s)
Greetings- I'm about to embark on a new installation of Centos 6 x64 on 4x SATA HDDs. The plan is to use RAID-10 as a nice combo between data security (RAID1) and speed (RAID0). However, I'm finding either a lack of raw information on the topic, or I'm having a mental issue preventing the osmosis of the implementation into my brain. Option #1: My understanding of RAID10 using 4

Software RAID 10?
Hello... I have a server with 4 x SCSI drives and I would like to install Centos 4 (or 5) onto a software RAID 10 array. Do you know if this is possible? I noticed that under the Centos 4.92 beta, RAID 5 is an option but for some reason RAID 10 is not listed. There does appear to be a RAID 10 module.... /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/md/raid10.ko More info I found here:

Moving from RAID 0 to LVM RAID?
So I've learned a valuable RAID 0 lesson, and it fortunately was not a major catastrophy. I got lucky, and had a workable-enough backup on tape to make the user who needed some data happy. Now, from the OS side, LVM is an option. Say the RAID controller only allows hardware striping or mirroring for logical volumes, but I want to use more than two disks, and I don't want the RAID 0

The cell companies are "doing it" like they think makes sense. If they know your cell is off/out of range they route instantly to VM. They could give "4-10 rings" of fake effort, but why. With follow me roaming and such, they want to process the call as fast as possible. If they don't know if the cell is available, they may go through about 4 rings of searching, but

RAID[56] status
If we''ve abandoned the idea of putting the number of redundant blocks into the top bits of the type bitmask (and I hope we have), then we''re fairly much there. Current code is at: git://, http://git.infradead.org/users/dwmw2/btrfs-raid56.git git://, http://git.infradead.org/users/dwmw2/btrfs-progs-raid56.git We have recovery working, as well as both full-stripe writes

CentOS 6.2 software raid 10 with LVM - Need help with degraded drive and only one MBR
CentOS Community, I have a dedicated server with 4 hard drives in a RAID 10 software configuration running LVM. My OS is CentOS 6.2. Earlier today, I rebooted my system and my system did not come back online. I opened a ticket with my datacenter who informed me that one of my hard drives is no longer recognized by the bios and has failed. I was told that an OS reinstall was needed. I
