CD burning issues & questions
I have been having some strange results trying to burn CDs under
CentOS. I don't think they are hardware related because I have had
some success, in fact most of this usually works.
I use k3b for most of my CD and DVD writing - it seems to work fairly
well (well, except for wrecking my installation a few weeks ago when
it crashed my installation and I had to reinstall to get it back, but

Hardware serial number access from (a) command(s)
Over the weekend, I had to make a technical support call on one of my
DVD burners, and at one point the recorded message mentioned I should
have my serial number handy. I thought there was a way to read that
from at least one piece of software on the system, but I couldn't
remember one and man -k on a number of subjects was unrevealing.
Can someone enlighten me (us)?
Thanks.

DVD reader: Hardware problem or OS glitch?
Hello: The box is dual boot (Win XP & CentOS 5). A Dell Dimension
4300 Celeron. There was an intermittent problem with this last year
and last Thanksgiving, I wiped the HD and installed Win XP and CentOS
5 clean. My daughter asked me to install KStars which is in the kdeedu
RPM on the Fedora Core 6 Install DVD. I did that, without any
problems, on my box and on my wife's box. On the

Gnome CD/DVD Burner?
Hi all,
Wondering if this might be a good item for either CentOSPlus or even
Extras repository.
I've been looking for a decent CD/DVD burner for Gnome.... at present
I load up k3b (KDE app) and thus much of the KDE environment).
Someone pointed me to GraveMan (http://www.nongnu.org/graveman/ )
which looks very good. All reports is that it's lean, mean and quite
stable.

URGENT: libdvdcss install hosed /var
I am running CentOS 5/2 (latest updates) with the GNOME DE on a 32-bit
machine (at work).
I have k3b installed, and I was trying to copy a DVD earlier this
morning, but k3b said it couldn't read encrypted DVDs.
So, I installed libdvdcss from rpmforge and restarted k3b. It hung
the system. I rebooted, and / had been damaged. After running e2fsck
from the repair prompt, I rebooted and a

Setting CDROM parms
My apologies in advance for asking such an elementary question. I
called myself searching the Installation Guide and Deployment Guide,
with no success.
The situation is that I bought a Lite-On ATAPI iHAP122 that will not
burn DVDs unless I use hdparm to turn dma off. I bought that drive
because it was a rare beige drive. Until I can find a decent DVD burner
and/or get a Windows machine put

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now
neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a
directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on,
usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is
write-protected (duh).
Here's what happened most recently:

Problem burning DVD+RW discs
Good Day--
I've been backing up my essential stuff to DVD+R discs for quite a while
with no trouble at all.
Last week I tried backing up to a DVD+RW with no trouble at all.
This week, when trying to re-write my weekly backup, CD/DVD Creator told
me it could not write to the disc because it was read-only. Is there a
bug in CD/DVD Creator or am I doing something incorrectly. Obviously,

Strange behavior from OO Writer
I just had the strangest experience I can remember since I ran
Windowsas my base OS....
Yesterday I was editing a file in the OO Writer (word processor).
Today, it will not open. I copied it to a new file, and it opened
fine. I edited it, updated it and closed it. Then I tried deleting
the original file and copying the new one to the old name. Won't
open. Renamed again, and it opens

Natulius CD burner does not accept my 700Mb CD-R disks
When I try to burn anything to cd, I get a message to insert a CD large
enough for my file (normally an ISO image). Doesn't matter if the iso
image is a 600Mb Centos ISO or a 48Mb DSL ISO. Same warning.
My CD-Rs are Memorex 700MB/80min 52x disks that work just fine on XP
systems.
So what am I missing configuration-wise?

iso size?
I've been being told, over and over, by K3B, Brasero, and
Isomaster, on two machines, with three different downloads of 6.0, that
the file is too large for the medium. Nautilus and the browser that die
each download all say it's 4.4 GB; I've tried with two +R and an RW DVD,
all of which are labelled 4.7 GB Two of the files are 32-bit, and one is

[Slightly OT] Use CentOS to create a bootable Mac OS X DVD from dmg file?
Hi,
Sorry if this is only half-CentOS-related.
In my office, I'm running CentOS on all my systems (server, workstation,
laptop, sandbox PCs). A colleague brought me her MacBook Pro to upgrade
it from OS X 10.5.7 to 10.11.6.
I downloaded the 5.8 GB dmg file and now I wonder how to create a
bootable DVD with this using only Linux tools.
1. Can I simply burn this as a data DVD with K3B?
2.

App for burning CD from MP3s
I would like to be able to make an audio CD directly from some mp3
files I have. I know that isn't the best way due to the lossy nature
of the MP3 format, but that's ok for this purpose.
K3b is supposed to be able to do this, but I got an unsupported file
type error when I tried this. I installed the python-mad decoder that
is listed in the k3b document, but I don't see how to get

Hey all,
Does anyone know of a CD ripper that will work with CentOS 8? I've
found a great many that will work CentOS 6 and 7 but nothing that will
build for CentOS 8.

Relocating WINE prefix
On my system, I have the wine prefix installed in the default location (/home/username/.wine). However, I goofed when I was installing linux, and my home partition is very small compared to the root partition. I tried repartitioning it with a livecd, but it said that the volume was "locked" or something like that. Anyways, I only have about 2 gigs of space left on my home partition,
