Remote reboot problem
Don't know if this might be hardware or software related, but it seems that every time I attempt to do a remote reboot of the machine, everything shuts down normally, and it never comes back. Just returned from the co-lo site, and when I plugged the monitor in, it had gone to the point of "rebooting" and hung. This is 4.3 on x-86. Sam -- Sam W.Drinkard -- sam at wa4phy.net

library() with v. 1.5.0 for Mac OS X Carbon
I am having trouble with the library function of R Version 1.5.0 for Mac OS X Carbon when I try to load libraries that did not come with the R installation. For example, I put the Biobase library from bioconductor.org in the 'library' folder. R cannot find it, even though it can find the pre-installed libraries: > library() # this lists standard libraries such as 'boot',

Swap
I know this is more of a general unix question, but the thread about the last kernel update, and memory usage got me to looking and thinking. Given a system with 2 Gb of memory, and at peak usage, top reports considerably less than the 2 gig amount in use, as well as system monitoring that never shows all available memory used, what would happen if you just turned swap off, and let memory

Kernel update = slower ?
This is really strange. Day before, I updated the machine here (x86_64) and all went normal. I rebooted, and everything came back just as I expected. Next morning, I noticed one of my jobs during the night had finished, but finished late by about 8 or 9 minutes. I really didn't think much of it, but after looking at jobs running today, I'm seeing the same thing. Processes that

SuperOdoctor for super-micro
Rats... found some hardware monitoring from the vendor and it's broken, or I'm missing some pieces. No mention of CentOS specifically, but RH is supported, so figured it *ought* to work. I'm apparently missing a library -- liblinc.so.1, and a net search reveals several sources, both for x86 and 64-bit. Tried them both, after the x86 did not work, and the 64-bit I thought was

Notice: Check your tuned settings for a performance boost.
Last week we noticed that the default scheduler isn't being set properly in CentOS 7. I haven't checked this for CentOS 6, but it might be worth exploring. The TL;DR is unless you're running CentOS 7 on a laptop or as a virtual guest, you should probably run 'tuned-adm profile throughput-performance' I wrote up the full details here ->

Summary re: read.table on Mac OS 10
Thanks to all who responded. Not all of the advice helped me with that particular problem, but, I have learned a lot just from your answers. 1. R for Mac 10 (Carbon version) uses the Mac convention of using ":" for the usual Unix "/" and thanks to Dr. Lumley for that since I'm new to R, Mac10, Macs in general, and Unix. 2. Interestingly, Dr. Ripley suggested to

I appreciate the parable of helping non-technical users (or, more precisely, users not keen on IT). As I understand, placement of software like Word or Photoshop servers this purpose. But both of them have decent open-source counterparts, and they are better fit for an rsync manual. Or, if from any reason proprietary software is preferred in this context (perhaps because it generates even more

A request for help managing wiki permissions
Long story short, the core team doesn't need to be in the business of micro-managing wiki permissions. We've not been that good at it during the best of times, and as the 6.6 build process is showing we've clearly let some stuff slip without following up on it appropriately here. What I'd propose is that 3-4 people who have been around the distribution a while (perhaps John

VPN connection before login
I imagine something like Cisco AnyConnect on Windows, where you can connect before login to the machine. So afterwards user specific network shares are available and can be connect via scripts. CairoPDF, Fonts, and Windows 7
Hi All: I have some basic questions about Cairo graphics engine. I'm trying to use the Cairo package to produce PDF output, mainly because I perceive it to be easy to use with a wide variety of fonts. But right now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what fonts are available to be used with Cairo, specifically the CairoPDF function. I've been able to successfully produce some test PDFs

Fresh ad installation - Win2022 can't join
Good morning, and a Happy New Year ? I'd like to setup a test-enviroment, based on Debian Bookworm and mjt's 4.19.3 packages. samba is running as a Hyper-V vm, its ip is 192.168.178.37, its name is dc.augusta.domain.tld My idea is to use this dc for two networks (192.168.178.0/24 and 192.168.180.0/24) and for testing one Windows 2022 server (192.168.178.34/24). I used these two
