evolving the spec (was: forking Markdown.pl?)
> Anyway, a spec for Markdown Extra would contain a spec for Markdown as > well, wouldn't it? I think the whole enterprise would be a lot more valuable, if we produce a combined spec, which would be self-contained, and call it Markdown 2.0. I don't think we necessarily need a formal grammar. What we need is to create a document, starting with "Markdown Syntax" perhaps,

problems with escaping backticks
I can't escape backticks if on a line with other code: $ echo 'maybe use `fixed face` for `/path/to/file` by using \`back ticks\` around it' | /usr/pkg/bin/Markdown <p>maybe use <code>fixed face</code> for <code>/path/to/file</code> by using \<code>back ticks\</code> around it</p> and this is even more wrong: $ echo 'maybe use

Entity conversion glitch?
Hello, Given the following text: under a license from AT&T; however, others were based on BSD instead. Daring Fireball's Markdown Dingus produces: <p>under a license from AT&T; however, others were based on BSD instead.</p> Note how the '&' is not escaped to '&amp;'. Bug? Feature? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, PA.

HTML5's audio/video and Markdown
Does anyone have any toughts on how one should be using <video> & <audio> with Markdown? Using the link or the img syntax? Maybe: [a film](film.m4v) [an audio](audio.mp3) could create: <video src="film.m4v" controls><a href="film.m4v">a film</a></ video> <audio src="audio.mp4" controls><a

tables with Unicode box drawing characters?
Hello, I read David Wheeler's table proposal[1] for Markdown and very much agree with his conclusion and PostgreSQL-inspired proposed format. I also read the mailing list archives for 2009 but did not find any clear concesus on whether DW's format was officially accepted (I hope it is soon!). However, I want to ask: has anyone considered taking these simple ASCII table drawings to the

ANN: python-markdown2 -- another Python implementation of Markdown
Hello all, I'm announcing python-markdown2 -- another Python implementation of Markdown. (MIT license.) http://code.google.com/p/python-markdown2/ It should be a drop-in replacement for [markdown.py](http://www.freewisdom.org/projects/python-markdown/). It fixes some issues that I ran into with markdown.py [^1]. I believe that it is faster than markdown.py [^2] and on par or a little

Fenced-Code-Blocks in Python-Markdown
I'd like to announce a beta release of the Fenced-Code-Blocks Extension for Python-Markdown. <http://www.freewisdom.org/projects/python-markdown/Available_Extensions> The latest code for Python-Markdown and packaged extensions are now available on Gitorious. <http://gitorious.org/projects/python-markdown> The same syntax is used as the just released PHP Markdown Extra 1.2. php-markdown-extra-extended - my humble attempt at extending php-markdown
Dear all, I have used Markdown via Drupal a few months now, with a customer site and my currently my own blog and based on that practical experience I wanted to add some extra functionality to PHP Markdown Extra, so out of this grow my (extended) weekend project https://github.com/egil/php-markdown-extra-extended The big missing item right now that I would like to implement is the ability to add

Backtick Hickup
I'm using Michel Fortin's MDTest cases to rewrite my html2text.php script. Just now I stumbled upon this bug (in PHP Markdown at least): # Input: Backtick: ``\``` # Output: <p>Backtick: ``&#96;``</p> # Should-Be Output: <p>Backtick: <code>`</code></p> If you (Michel) are already aware of this, just ignore me ;-) -- Milian Wolff

An Extra for Python (was: Re: seemingly no good way to end bulleted list and start code block)
On 10/6/07, Lou Quillio <public at quillio.com> wrote: [snip] > Wish there were an 'Extra' for Python. > There is. Sort of. Python-Markdown has an extension interface [1]. There's a number already available and its fairly easy to write your own. I've slowly been adding many of php extra's features [2]. Unfortunately, some things are still hard, but were working to

Correct behaviour of block elements without leading line break before paragraph
Hi I hope I haven't missed anything which answers this question on the syntax page, but what is the correct behaviour of the following markdown random text heading == random text # heading random text + list 1 (note there is not space before the '+') The following page treats the headings differently to the start of the list http://old-wp.slekx.com/the-markdown-tutorial/ That

Table of contents
I'm using Markdown in an app and would like to provide support for including a table of contents. Any suggestions for a syntax? Has anyone done this before? My first thoughts are: 1. Have a special header item (using markdown extra's header syntax), e.g. generate-contents: yes 2. Have a special xml tag with optional alternative text inside, e.g. <contents> 1. First thingy 2.

list corner case
I'm curious how people think the following *should* be interpreted: - one 2. two http://babelmark.bobtfish.net/?markdown=-++one%0D%0A2.+two%0D%0A%0D%0A As you can see, implementations split into three groups here: (a) treat as an unordered list Markdown.pl, Python markdown, MultiMarkdown, BlueCloth, MarkdownJ, Showdown (b) treat as an unordered list with an ordered

trailing spaces in code block
It seems that Markdown 1.0.1 strips off trailing spaces at the end of code blocks. Is this really what it's supposed to do? There might be reasons to include trailing spaces in code displayed on a web page -- for example, in demonstrating how to do a hard line break in markdown. Even if the trailing spaces aren't visible, they can be cut and pasted. Besides, Markdown 1.0.1 preserves

`time` element syntax
Hi folks, I expect that the response to this post will be "we don't need such a thing", but humour me for a moment by pretending that in fact we do. HTML5 added a number of new tags to the mix, but arguably the most significant is the `time` element. It associates a machine-readable timestamp with a human-readable string (e.g. `<time

underscore and italic policy
Hi All, So I just joined the list - first off, Markdown is a great format and we're using it in our online community project disCourse: http://discourse.ics.hawaii.edu We're using markdown for our wiki pages, stories, message postings, pretty much everywhere. One markdown policy that doesn't seem to fit intuitively for our users is the fact that embedded underscores leads to

discount <markdown in C>
I've written an implementation of Markdown in C, for people like me who shout BAH! and wave their canes at modern programming languages. (I needed a decent markup language for my website and weblog, and didn't want to have to install any new programming languages on the machine.) Discount <http://www.pell.portland.or.us/~orc/Code/discount> has been in production for the past two and
