readGDAL or raster for reading bit map files
Dear all,
I have asked yesterday of how I can read a simple bitmap file in R cran.
I was suggest to use either readGDAL or raster for loading my bitmap
a. I have done it with readGDAL like
    store<-readGDAL(fname='lena256.bmp')
and it works,... but it converts my matrix-like notion of a bitmap to a large vector
b. Raster also returns a class that I can not understand.

PPM to BMP converter
Dear all,
Several days ago, I posted How to write a bmp file pixel by pixel. Instead of bmp, I succeeded in writing a PPM file by using the pixmap package. Thanks for the hint generously provided by Uwe Ligges.
Now I have a new question. How to convert a PPM file to BMP file in R? I know I can do this in photoshop or by some other softwares, but I think if I Can do this in R, that

[FORGED] Re: polypath winding rule with transparency
Hi
Just to clarify, I think this IS a problem with grid.path() as well as
polypath().
For the example you give, grid.path() diverts to drawing a polygon
(because there is no 'id' specified), and the NAs in 'x' generate two
separate polygons, which get drawn one on top of the other.
The correct analogy to the polypath() example is ...
x2 <- matrix(x[!is.na(x)], ncol=2)

read the middle of a file
Hello,
The other day Justin Peter presented a mini program to plot a topographic map with an overlay of the worldHires. I seemed interesting so I checked the ETOPO5 site and find that there is a new file ETOPO1 with a 1 minute grid. I downloaded it and tried a similar procedure. Now the ETOPO1.gz is 1 Gb and the uncompressed file is 5 Gb. They do not fit into my laptop. I tried the following

Tif image to 8bit colour matrix.
Dear listers,
I have a collection of tif images that I would like to convert, in R, to a
matrix containing the values of the 8bit colour. Ideally, I would like a matrix
for each of the colour channels (red, blue and green). I have 'googled' and
searched the help list but have yet to find a solution and hope that someone can
point me in the right direction.
I currently use

How to label a polygon window (spatstat package)
Hi,?
I want to label a polygon (circle or polygon) inside.
As for example code?

x <- runif(20)
y <- runif(20)
X <- ppp(x, y, window=disc(0.7))
plot(X)
Now I want to label that circle inside . Can some one please help me ??
Thanks.?

Problem with adding a raster and a brick
Hi,
I seem to be having a problem adding the following two raster objects
together - one is a rasterLayer, the other is a rasterBrick. The extent,
resolution, and origin are the same, so according to my understand it
should work. The objects look like so:

class       : RasterLayer
dimensions : 60, 200, 12000 (nrow, ncol, ncell)
resolution : 0.5, 0.5 (x, y)

Time Delay / Wait
Hi Group,
Is there something like a delay function based on System time or equivalent?
I basically am generating a few graphs and I would like to see each graph
for say 2mins before moving on to the next one?
I can always have an empty for-loop I guess but is there a better way?
Thanks,

arguments must have the same length
Hi, anyone up in the night working? Thanks for being there. I'm getting this
error message "arguments must have the same length."
Can't seem to straighten it out. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
PS I saw that someone asked a similar question, but I don't see that
anyone had posted a reply...

read ESRI file geodatabase feature classes
Hello-
Does anyone know if R can read in ESRI file geodatabase feature
classes, directly from the file geodatabase? I currently have to
export the data out of Arc, to a csv file, then read the csv file. I'd
like to bypass this step and read directly from the file geodatabase.
Thanks for your help.

rgeos - gBuffer, width by z-value
Dear list!
I have problem with buffer size (width) in package rgeos. I would like to expand given geometry (points) to specified width based on the z value from attribute table. Here is example:

point_shp <- SpatialPointsDataFrame(point[,1:2],point)
plot(point_shp, xlim = c(0,30), ylim = c(0,20))

RNetCDF: retrieving variable names and units
Dear List,
does anybody has experience with the RNetCDF package? I manage to open a connection and copy data from a ncdf file but would need a way to automatically retrieve variable names (ideally all of them from one file) and units from the file.
Any ideas?
