initial value in 'vmmin' is not finite
Dear r helpers
I run the following code for nested logit and got a message that
Error in optim(c(0, 0, 0, 0, 0.1, -2, -0.2), fr, hessian = TRUE, method = "BFGS") : initial value in 'vmmin' is not finite
What does this mean? and how can I correct it?
Thank you

R-users
E-mail: r-help@r-project.org
Hi! R-users.
I am just wondering what the definition of "dffits" in R language is.
Let me show you an simple example.

yy <- c(1,3,4,2,4)
data1 <- data.frame(x=xx, y=yy)
lm.out <- lm(y~., data=data1, x=T)

Working with "ts" objects
I am relatively new to R and object oriented programming. I have relied on
SAS for most of my data analysis. I teach an introductory undergraduate
forecasting course using the Diebold text and I am considering using R in
addition to SAS and Eviews in the course. I work primarily with univariate
or multivariate time series data. I am having a great deal of difficulty

how to add a 'label' column
Hello R users,
I'd like to ask a question about how to add a new column. So, below is my

In order to perform the repeated ANOVA, I first imported the following

Comparing "transform" to "with"
Hi All,
I've been successfully using the with function for analyses and the
transform function for multiple transformations. Then I thought, why not
use "with" for both? I ran into problems & couldn't figure them out from
help files or books. So I created a simplified version of what I'm
doing:
rm( list=ls() )
x1<-c(1,3,3)
x2<-c(3,2,1)
x3<-c(2,5,2)

Ordered logit/probit
Hello everyone
I am trying to fit an ordered probit/logit model for bank rating

Besides polr() in MASS package which is not written especially for this as
far as I know, do you know how else I can do this?
I already found the modified polr () version on the

Plot 2-d Polynomial without solving it
Hi,
I want to plot a polynomial in the form like ax^2 + bxy + cy^2 + dx + ey + f
=0 without solving it(since I may have 3 or 4 dimensional polynomial and
it's really hard to solve). Is there any way to plot this kind of
polynomial?
Thanks a lot!

Alternative to interp.surface() offered
I wanted a simple function for bilinear interpolation on a 2-D grid, and
interp.surface() in the fields package didn't quite suit my needs. In
particular, it requires uniform spacing between grid points. It also
didn't have the "visual" reference frame I was looking for. Here is an
alternative function, followed by an example.

landscape plots
Is there a set of R expressions that has the same effect as the
following set of S-Plus 2000 expressions:
graphsheet(format="printer", orientation="landscape")
par(mfrow=c(2,2))
plot(x1, y1)
plot(x2, y2)
plot(x3, y3)
plot(x4, y4)
dev.off() # one page of landscape plots sent to printer
I am having trouble with formulating the equivalent of the first line of
the above in R.

Selecting a subplot of pairs

I'm trying to plot a set of 3 dependant variables (y) against 4
predictors (x) in a matrix-like plot, sharing x- an y-axis for all the

y1/x1 y1/x2 y1/x3 y1/x4
y2/x1 y2/x2 y2/x3 y2/x4
y3/x1 y3/x2 y3/x3 y3/x4
In fact, this plot is a rectangular selection of the result of pairs(),

"zpool import -f" not forceful enough?
I had to use the labelfix hack (and I had to recompile it at that) on 1/2 of an old zpool. I made this change:
/* zio_checksum(ZIO_CHECKSUM_LABEL, &zc, buf, size); */
zio_checksum_table[ZIO_CHECKSUM_LABEL].ci_func[0](buf, size, &zc);
and I''m assuming [0] is the correct endianness, since afterwards I saw it come up with "zpool import".
Unfortunately, I

Help with domain model/database design
Hi All,
I was wondering if I could get some comments on my approach to the
design of the domain model and database for my rails app. I don''t
have much experience in this so I am wondering if I am heading in the
right direction.
My app is an ecommerce site for my business which is a record label.
That might seem straight forward, but the one thing that might be
