make check problem
Dear R People:
I thought all was well with my source compilation on Windows
until I tried "make check"
Here is an abbreviated version of my results:

failure of make check-all
This run was done this AM on my linux box, and older 32 bit Dell optiplex (core 2 duo).
The failure message is at the very end. (It's due to be replaced in a couple of weeks.)
The sequence of steps was
svn up
tools/rsync-recommended
./configure
make
make check-all |& tee zzz
Terry T.
Result of ./config
R is now configured for i686-pc-linux-gnu

R 3.5.0 fails its regression test suite on Linux/x86_64
Hi,
I just tried to upgrade Nixpkgs to R 3.5.0, but unfortunately the new
version fails its regression test suite. We configure the build using
the flags "--without-recommended-packages", in case that's relevant. You
can see a complete build log with all relevant information at [1].
Anyway, the test failures look like this:
| make[3]: Entering directory

failure of make check-all
You may want to retry that after a make distclean, in case anything changed in the toolchain.

multiple installations of R (in Fedora)
Dear list,
so far I installed new versions of R on top of the old one in default /linux/local/lib64 .
For several reasons (mostly compatibility issues) I would like to change this and to keep older versions still functional/available. Furthermore this should allow to perform installing and testing completely independent of any user still using a precedent version of R, and the switch for users

problem building R from svn repo
Hola!
I just changed my laptop to debian squeeze,
downloaded R devel from svn repo, as described in the manual.
Then I configured for building in a separate build dir with:
kjetil at kjetil:~/R/Rbuilddir$ sudo ../svn/configure
--- which succeeded, with:
R is now configured for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu

R and MLE
I learned R & MLE in the last few days. It is great! I wrote up my
explorations as
http://www.mayin.org/ajayshah/KB/R/mle/mle.html
I will be most happy if R gurus will look at this and comment on how
it can be improved.
I have a few specific questions:
* Should one use optim() or should one use stats4::mle()?
I felt that mle() wasn't adding much value compared with optim, and

R-devel (1.7 to be) on windows XP
Hola!
I'm trying to make r-devel on windows XP. I downloaded an hour ago
R-1.7.0beta_2003-03-30.tar.gz
make terminates without any error messages, with
make check I get error messages from tests of internet and
socket functions, surely because my modem was not
connected (It doesn't say in the documentation (file INSTALL)
that internet must be connected under make check.)
But the file

Inverting matrix...
Dear all,
Either I'm being totally blind now (as you know, the eyes are the first
thing that is blinded :-)), or something is missing in
"An Introduction to R". The section heading of section 5.7.1 is
"Multiplication, inversion and solving linear equations", and since I was
looking for the canonical way of inverting a matrix, this was the place to
look. However, I found

Matrix output from drawing functions
Dear all,
I'm a bit confused about the output from functions that generates random
values, e.g. rpois. I'm using 0.65.1 on Digital UNIX alphaev6.
If I say
> rpois(10,5)
output is not unexpectedly:
[1] 4 6 5 7 6 5 2 2 5 3
but I figured that if I go:
> rpois(10,1:10)
I would get a 10x10 matrix as output, with random values for each of
the vector elements in the row vectors, but

Off-Topic: LaTeX package listings
Hola!
I ask here since I learnt from this list that the LaTeX package listings
should be good
for typesetting R code. I encountered one problem:
\begin{lstlisting}
X %*% V
\end{lstlisting}
in the output the * in %*% disappears! same with %/%, etc, the /
disappears.
Any ideas?

proposal for new flag to R CMD INSTALL
For the purpose of helping in installing only parts of a package
(in my case, the help system), R CMD INSTALL
should accept a flag --no-check-deps
Below is a diff for R-devel, svn revision 53672
