mocking singletons
How can I safely mock a singleton without the mocked method living on
outside the scope of the test method?
I''ve run into this problem with mocking methods on globals (gasp!) in
the past by doing something like
def mock_my_global
original = $my_global
$my_global.expects(:foo).returns(''bar'')
yield
$my_global = original
end
Is there something similar I

ActiveRecord lets you define validations at the class level. This
plugin lets you define validations for ActiveRecord instances. Take

Mocking, changing method interfaces and integration tests
Suppose we have a method ''foo'' which internally uses another method
''bar''.
Being good BDDers we mock out the ''bar'' method. After all, we only
want to spec the ''foo'' method - actually running the ''bar'' method
means slower, less maintainable and brittler specs. That''s why we <3

Mock with an attributes that has state
I''m developing a rails application. I have an Order model that has_many
OrderItems.
I mocked the OrderItem model in my Order specs using mock_model. I thought
I should focus my specs on each model and always mock associated models.
In my Order model I need a way to merge OrderItems which have the same cost
and same product_id. That I can spec.
The other thing this merge helper

controller spec with model that validates_uniqueness
I want to use mocks and stubs to test the controller, but am having
trouble getting my validation not to trigger. Here''s the code:
# spec:
Image.stub!(:find).and_return(@image)
@image.should_receive(:save!).once.with(:any_args)
put :update, :id => @image.id, :category_id =>
@category.id, :image => {:name => ''test'', :image_number =>

testing behaviour or testing code?
hypothetical question for all you BDD experts:
I want to make sure that a :list action always returns widgets in
alphabetical order. There''s at least 2 ways of doing this:
it "should fetch items in alphabetical order" do
Widget.should_receive(:find).with(:order => "name ASC")
get :list
end
it "should fetch items in alphabetical order" do

Something cool I learned about rspec today
I found an awesome feature today. When you''re setting expectations,
you can actually pattern match the parameters to methods. Here''s my
discussion and example:

validates_presence_of validation order?
I have a form with 3 fields: user_id, email and password.
All 3 fields are required, so I have a "validates_presence_of :user_id,
:email, :password" in my model.
Works, but the validation errors show up in a different order than I
specificed in the validates_presence_of statement.
Is there a way to specify the order in which the validations (and
corresponding error messages) should

test/mocks/ in rails directory structure
Anyone ever uses test/mocks/development && test/mocks/test directories ?
If someone does, test/mocks/development doesn''t really seem like a
nice place for putting development environment mocked classes. May be
mocks/ should be moved to RAILS_ROOT ? Or may be it should be removed.

Validate some fields only on object creation, not update
I''m having a problem with my User model. Originally I had alot of
validation, including this:
validates_presence_of :password_confirmation, :password
validates_length_of :password, :within => 4..50
validates_confirmation_of :password
However, this made it impossible to edit a user without setting his
password, which I don''t want. So I tried to isolate the above
validations

Example for attr_accessible?
Is anyone out there writing specs to check attr_accessible fields? I had
originally written my spec to check for allowing the desired fields, and
then none of the other regular db fields. Unfortunately this isn''t
satisfactory, because attr_protected could have been used instead, which
of course wouldn''t prevent mass assignment to any whatever=(val) method.
I''m thinking

Trying to Overide Class Object Methdos For Testing
Hi,
I thought I had a handle on the whole singleton class thing but now I''m
not too sure.
I have a class definition:
class ValidationMaster
def validate(params)
# complex and time consuming validation
# returns true on success, raises Exception
# on failure
end
end
Okay, so when I''m running my functional tests within rails, I want to be
able to control how

i receive 4 errors.

Can I add a singleton action to @controller in a test?
All,
I want to create a mock action to test a filter in a functional test,
e.g.:
# Simplified example
def test_my_filter
# Singleton action
def @controller.foo
assert # something
end
ActionController::Routing::Routes.draw do |map|
map.connect '':controller/foo'', :action => ''foo''
end
get :foo
end

Combine custom validations with helpers
Hi
I have a model that uses several validation helpers, for example
validates_presence_of. Now I want to add a custom validate method for
a very complex validation. I override validate in the model and it
works by itself but when I do this the helper validations stop
working. I guess the helper methods rely on the
ActiveRecord::Base#validate original method in some way. Has anyone
any suggestions

ActiveRecord validations and FormBuilder
Hi,
I''m writing my own FormBuilder and I wanted to put an asterisk or
something next to any required fields. The Builder has access to the
AR object, is there any method I can call on the AR object that will
tell me whether or not a particular field is required? Failing that,
can I access the complete list of validations so I can look through
it for instances of

Is there a way of validating input inside the controller? or an equivalent to
ActiveRecord::Validations::ClassMethods.validates_presence_of ?

I''ve got a user object which has quite a few attributes mapped to the
database. As of right now I''ve got some validations in the model like:

password."
validates_confirmation_of :password, :message => "Password doesn''t match
the confirmation."
