Mocking User.find( :all, :limit => 10 )
Hi, I''m trying to setup a mock for my controller test but I can''t get it to recognise the mock. I use it "should find all users" do User.should_receive(:find).with( :all, :limit => 10 ).and_return([@user]) do_get end and in the controller @users = User.find(:all, :limit => 10 ) But this does not work. It gives me User expected :find with (:all)

spec''ing shared controller methods
I want to isolate and spec methods that are shared by controllers, and live in application.rb. Whereas I usually also provide examples in individual controllers that use these methods, not necessarily all the edge cases and I''d like to isolate the examples. This is the approach I''m taking (thanks to bryanl for suggestions and http://pastie.caboo.se/123626). WDYT? This

How to test for exceptions
Hi folks, I''m in the process of converting a Test::Unit functional test to RSpec, but I''ve run into a slight problem. I tried looking through the documentation but I still don''t know what I missed. Thanks in advance, Blake describe VenuesController, "on update" do before(:each) do @venue = mock("venue")

Macros and stuff
I was looking at my controller code and the edit/create/update/new for each are practically identical. So first I DRY''d the four methods in each controller to just one and then I decided to write a single macro for all my controllers. This is the macro: def self.edit_action_for(model, options = {}) model_class = Object.const_get(model) define_method(:edit) do

Running specs for a plugin - undefined method ''define'' for object
I''m trying to write specs for a plugin I''m developing named audit_fu, and I''m running into a problem which I can''t get past it. I''ve got the same specs setup in the main rails app, and everything works fine there, it''s just running the plugin specs that I''m having a problem with. My setup is: - edge rails - edge rspec (in

Injecting actions into controllers
Hi, I''m trying to write a plugin that should inject an action into the controller. Please note, not just an instance method, but also an _action_, one of those that are listable by running ControllerClassName.action_methods. I wrote the following code: def render_field_search(name, object, controller, options = {}) controller.class.class_eval do

removing Mocha; 'spec spec' fails but the specific model file passes
I happened to mix ryan bates'' authentication scaffold with rspec_scaffold on a demo project. and ran into the problem of mixing mock frameworks...ryan uses mocha. So, as a learning experience, I choose to redo ryan''s tests without mocha but ran into a strange problem with tests of the User model. With debugging you can see.... If you run just the user_spec.rb file, everything

Rails Masters'' debugging techniques -> Rails Recipes?
Hi, This msg for Chad Fowler or anyone who fits the subject line. I bought the Recipes book and really like the way it has been progressing. There is one subject I''d like to see explored in detail. Having come from Assembly and C background I find that a ''must have'' tool in your collection is the debugger. I find debugging a Rails App the most thorny issue inversely

CheckListBox : delete method bug !
Hi, I''ve practically finished a patch for removing the limitation of CheckListBox (http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/wxruby-development/2007-October/000973.html) but I just discovered a new bug related with this control !! I need to redefine the delete method to take into account the deletion of the associated data. The problem is that if I just redefine this method and simply call super,

Taking Control of Un-handled Exceptions
Greetings, I''m trying to catch all un-handled exceptions. I''m having problems handling the RoutingError and UnknownAction exceptions. I''ve added the following to my application controller as a protected method: def rescue_action(exception) render(:text => "error") end As far as I understand, this should catch all uncaught exceptions and override

Automatically mocking ActiveRecord methods
Seems like I do a fair amount of mocking ActiveRecord''s automatically generated routines when I''m testing controllers. Things like: @portalspace = PortalSpace.new :public_readable => true, :public_writable => true, :name => ''public'' @portalspace.stubs(:id).returns(203) PortalSpace.stubs(:find).with(203).returns(@portalspace)

Problems with mock assigned to a constant
Hi all, Initially I thought this was a bug in the built-in mocking framework(and it still may be), but I better hash it out on the mailing list before I file/reopen the ticket: http://rspec.lighthouseapp.com/projects/5645/tickets/478-mocks-on-constants#ticket-478-6 I thought my example illustrated my problem, but obviously I was passing the wrong arguments to the mock. I revised my example to

Mocking models provided in Rails plugins
Hey folks, How do I mock a model that is given to me by a Rails plugin? I''m trying to mock Session from the restful_authentication plugin but I get a number of errors telling me RSpec doesn''t recognize Session.
