When to use BDD/TDD w/ external libraries
Test First Development is great...But should you use it when you are
adding classes/methods on to external library that doesn''t have an
extensive test suite? I noticed that the rspec plugin for autotest
has no specs.
David Chemlinsky said something to the list a while back that has
been stewing in my subconscious - that you develop software
differently using Test First

Something like rcov but more explicit?
Hey list,
Does anything exist that can show me which lines are explicitly tested? RCov
is great, but it doesn''t really give a sense of _actual_ coverage, indeed,
there is no guarantee that functions executed were in fact called as the
result of a line being tested.
I know nothing of the rspec internals, but would a simple list of executed
lines be a relatively simple feature to add?

Extra Options to Heckle
I''ve tried running Heckle with rspec on some of my classes, but keep
getting (what I believe to be) an infinite recursion. Is there some
way to supply extra options to heckle via. rspec?

TDD stats on a project
Just a thought, it would be interesting to track and graph the number
of examples (and number implemented) on a daily basis as a way of
tracking a project progress.

Promoting options to heckle?
Hi,
I''m trying out RSpec with the heckle option (for mutation testing).
Problem is that heckle goes into an infinite loop when running it on an
example. I want to send a "--verbose" to heckle but can''t find a way to do
that through the spec binary. Since this is not an uncommon situation when
using heckle I would like this to be supported in some way by RSpec.

autometric gem
I''m working on tool to automatically run code metrics in the same way
as autotest. It''s runs rcov, flog, and saikuro right now, and works
with rspec and rails. It''s hosted at rubyforge:

I''ve got a post on how to configure it with growl:

log file
hi,
When running rails spec tests is there a log file generated? i''m
looking for generated sql to help me debug like in development.log
or is there a way to run the test against a webrick server so i can
see logs?
(i''m not running with spec_server at the moment, it doesnt seem to
work well with autotest)
thanks

MockCov: Proof of concept
Hey list,
RSpec is great, I''ve been using it at work for a couple of months now. One
gripe I have is that I find it hard to know exactly to what extent my code
is covered by the specs. I am aware of RCov and Heckle; they''re great, but
I''d like to demonstrate another perspective of coverage analysis I''ve hacked
up.
The perspective is that of what is mocked and

rails edge
hi,
first time trying rspec, and rails edge. Are there any known issues
running rspec with rails edge?
for one, apparently script/generate scaffold_resource has been
renamed just "resource". Do I just search/replace "scaffold_resource"
with "resource" in file rspec_resource_generator.rb ? Somethings
still missing.

should_receive.again
Hi,
It appears that if I have 2 should_receives in a row, the latest one
overrides the previous one(s).
If there isn''t one, could we add a way to accumulate them, such as
@thing.should_receive(:method).and_return(@value)
@thing.should_receive(:method).again.and_return(@value)
@thing.should_receive(:method).again.and_return(@value)
would be equivalent to

questions rspec on rails
Hi, rather than flooding this list with separate emails, I''ve been
queueing up questions using rspec with rails. (an irc channel would
be nice too :) Here ya go...
- Is there a way to test named routes?
- Could I get an example how to test an ajax request
(link_to_remote)? would that go in view? and/or in controller spec?
- Can you assert which layout template is rendered in a

Unexpected message on :attr_accessor
This may be a dumb noob issue, but I haven''t found any answers while seaching
the forum--
I have a controller method
def edit
@user = User.find params[:id]
@user.password_confirmation = @user.password
end
The User class has an "attr_accessor :password_confirmation" definition (so
"password_confirmation" doesn''t exist in the users table). My spec

sharing specs in a subclass
Hi
I''ve spec''d a class and they pass.
Now I''d like to assure that any subclass of this class also passes
the same specs.
Any suggestions for a clever way to handle this?
I''d prefer to keep the existing specs as is (eg instead of moving
everything into shared behaviors, or doing something to all the
''describe'' lines)
thanks

rspec on rails update question
I''m sure this is OT but I''d appreciate the help
I''m using rspec_on_rails
I prefer to use stable release rather than live dangerously (at least
until I can tell the difference between what I might be doing wrong
vs problems in rspec). However, I would like to try the
RspecScaffoldGenerator fix.
I installed (per the docs) last week with the following commands

stub with assigns?
is there a way to stub a method that sets an instance variable, so
the stub sets it too?
def find_foo

end

Am I missing something with Heckle?
Hi
I can''t get heckle working. In fact, I''ve built an example so simple
that it either shows a bug, or I am being really, REALLY stupid.
Heckle does not appear to support RSpec directly, so I''m trying to use
spec --heckle (RSpec trunk as of 10 mins ago, Heckle 1.4.1). I''ve
constructed this pair of sample files:
18> ~/Desktop/heckle_test % cat
