SNMP monitoring options
Hi all,
Been using Cacti for monitoring various things like, system disk/mem/
proc, network usage, router usage etc...
While its been fun, the graphs are just unruly.
Was looking an OpsView (the free version), wondering what your
experience with this type of trend/heuristic analysis has been and
what what you like.
And of course thoughts on OpsView.

Time series data with dropouts/gaps
I have time-series data from a pair of inexpensive self-logging 3-axis accelerometers (http://www.gcdataconcepts.com/xlr8r-1.html). Since I'm not sure of the vibration/shock spectrum I'm measuring, for my initial sensor characterization run the units were mounted together with the sample rate set to the maximum of 640 samples/sec.
Unfortunately, at this sample rate there are significant

win3.1 in wine & suse8.1
I'm new to wine and suse 8.1.
I d/l the most current wine version for suse8.1 = 200303.. and rpmed it.
I was surprised that wine was not updated with Yast but only directly
with rpm.-F ...
Does anybody you know why? I had tried it first and it seemed to work
but rpm -q showed the same date!
I now have doubts on all the other rpm patches/updates ...
The win3.1 program is special purpose

Getting "Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails." from one client
Hi!
I am new to Mongrel but really like it so far. We''ve been running a
single instance for our test server for about a week now. When one
of our editors accesses the site, they receive a blank white page in
Firefox and/or IE6/Win.
In Mongrel logs we see this:
Wed Aug 09 16:25:30 PDT 2006: BAD CLIENT (192.168.2.42): Invalid HTTP
format, parsing fails.

WINE ASPI support and my Polaroid SprintScan 35 Plus
I recently acquired one of these nice film scanners and have set about
getting it to work under Linux+WINE (yes, I know about VueScan, but I
need the finer controls offered by Polaroid's software). The last
version of Windows I ever ran on my computer was 3.1, and I still have a
working installation on a DOS partition. This scanner is old enough
that Win3.1 drivers exist, and everything

Slow to open Word document the first time
On W98 or W2K PC, the first time I open a Word document on a Samba drive it takes about 20secs, thereafter about 2 secs. Running on HP9000 K380 HP-UX 10.20, Samba version must be 6 years old at least.

Request for advice on character set conversions (those damn Excel files, again ...)
Dear list,
I have to read a not-so-small bunch of not-so-small Excel files, which
seem to have traversed Window 3.1, Windows95 and Windows NT versions of
the thing (with maybe a Mac or two thrown in for good measure...).
The problem is that 1) I need to read strings, and 2) those
strings may have various encodings. In the same sheet of the same file,
some cells may be latin1, some

Best Practices for Shared Models?
What''s the best practice for having multiple ruby apps sharing the same
set of models? Are people just doing file system sym links or copying,
or is there an elegant little hook I don''t know about that lets you tell
the apps to look in a different location other than app/models?

Huge delays on login/first access from WinXP clients on samba 3.0.4 PDC
Hi *,
after upgrade from 2.2.8a to 3.0.4, I'm suffering from ~10 min. delays on
login/first access of a share from a WinXPpro client to a samba 3.0.4 PDC

Network time sync and reverse NetBios name lookup
I made a somewhat deep check for time synchronization and I
couldn't find what I was looking for. What I need to do is synchronize
the clock on a Linux box to the clock on an NT server. I can't use NTP
or any other protocol because the NT box doesn't understand it. Any
pointers would be great.
The second issue is that I need to do (if possible) a reverse
NetBios name lookup by
