Which phones are good, or at least acceptable, for home and office
I am looking to replace all of the old "Bell" (POTS) phones in my home and office with IP phones. As you can imagine I don't have a huge budget to work with but I want phones that will provide acceptable voice quality and durability. There are basically three categories as I see it 1. satellite phones (low cost, low function) 2. primary domestic phone (good quality, POE capable,

Wiki Voip Phone reviews
Hi, We have a page on the wiki just for phone reviews, but I think it needs a bit of format change. Instead of individual reviews for each phone, I think each person should review all phones they have worked with and list the phones they have had access to and rank them in relation to each other. Also each review should have a date so the reader can see how fresh the data is to current.

Codec order sent wrong from Asterisk
I'm communicating a softphone (SJPhone) to a Grandstream phone GXP-2000. The codec order on each one is the next: SJPhone: GSM - iLBC - PCMA - PCMU GXP2000: G729 - GSM - PCMA - PCMU (I have a G729 license, so there's no problem with transcoding G729) In my sip.conf, I've defined the following codec order: disallow=all allow=g729 allow=gsm allow=g726 allow=alaw allow=ulaw And my

Can Asterisk "proxy" a SIP phone to make it look like a Cisco skinny softphone?
Hi there We have a Cisco VOIP environment here, with hard and softphones. I have a softphone account/etc, but I'm a Linux user and (as far as I'm aware) there is no Cisco softphone for Linux. However I can run Asterisk. So I was wondering if there is a way to "convert" a SIP phone transaction into a SKINNY transaction so that the Cisco environment thinks it is a Cisco

Poor VoIP voice quality in one direction from three providers
We currently use asterisk 1.4.x with two Zaptel cards connected to POTS lines. So we make "outbound" calls from their softphones (using ulaw format), which go over a dedicated DSL line to the asterisk server in our office, which then converts the calls to POTS. This all works fine, assuming there aren't any unusual problems. It sounds as good as POTS on both ends. However, we

SIP Phone dropping calls, SIP Softphones working fine
Hello! I am semi-new to asterisk, I've been toying with it for about a month now. I'm using the current version from the CVS server (as of last week) and have succesfully connected it to Broadvoice, as well as a few softphones. I got a Nortel i2004 IP phone from a friend to setup at home as a homephone using Broadvoice, but going through my * box and using iptel.com for toll free calls.

Voice quality of Softphones vs. IP Phones an d Gateways.
In our experience, the total cost of softphones(money, reduced sound quality and lower reliability) in a large call center environment is actually greater over time than the cost of a channelbank and cheap analog headphones. We've tried 2 softphones, 2 kinds of SIP VOIP hardphones, 2 kinds of SIP analog adapters and we've tried channelbanks over the last 3 years. Right now we are half done

Soft phone sound quality help
Anyone got any tips on improving sound quality on soft phones running under Window XP SP2? I have tried Xlite, SJPhone and Firefly. They all seem to have significant sound quality problems. We have a reasonable sized network of several hundred devices connected together using Layer 2 switches, i.e. pretty dumb switches with no QoS. I also have a Grandstream connected to the same switching gear.

IAX2 and INVAL packets
Is anybody here familiar with the meaning of INVAL packets for IAX2? Every few days I get a dropped outgoing call in the middle of the conversation (the outgoing call has been connected for few minutes) when an incoming call comes in. The log reads the following when this happens: [Nov 17 15:25:04] DEBUG[5138] chan_iax2.c: Immediately destroying 2963, having received INVAL [Nov 17 15:25:04]

Softphones and other VOIP PBX's
Background: I've been having some minor issues with our Sipura 841's. Mostly it just relates to them being cheap phones. One of the alternatives to buying new phones was using soft phones. I'm curious what other people are using that works well. I found NCH's SoftPhone Express Talk which is a nice implementation with some decent features. They apparently make a NT based PBX,

Connections, but no voice paths except by console
I have a software-only PBX set up. I can register various softphones and they will call each other -- but I've never succeeded in getting any voice routed from any of the softphones. Only the console will transmit audio. I am writing to ask if I have missed some obvious step in configuring the system. Conditions: (1) Softphones running on the same machine as the PBX: Only Kphone seems
