multiple softphone clients and same/different account credentials
(I'm new to Asterisk, after having started VOIP with vat on the mbone in the 90s.) I am setting up my first Asterisk system, and trying to read docs/guidance and follow best practices. I have read the 5th Edition of "Asterisk: The Definitive Guide" and like the 3rd Edition on the web it recommends that hardphones and softphones both have a unique name distinct from any concept of

Voice quality of Softphones vs. IP Phones an d Gateways.
In our experience, the total cost of softphones(money, reduced sound quality and lower reliability) in a large call center environment is actually greater over time than the cost of a channelbank and cheap analog headphones. We've tried 2 softphones, 2 kinds of SIP VOIP hardphones, 2 kinds of SIP analog adapters and we've tried channelbanks over the last 3 years. Right now we are half done

Softphone that emulates Skype API ?
There's a large number of gadgets one can buy that work with Skype through the API. One of the things I'm interested right now is the ability to properly use a mobile phone headset with a SIP/IAX softphone. Is there an softphone that emulates the Skype API? Are there legal implications in writing an softphone that emulates the Skype API? Should I just give up and buy a Siemens DECT

IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards
We are in the process of an Asterisk call center deployment using IAX2 G711 ulaw softphones. Outbound sound quality is terrible. This week we rebuilt the entire LAN with Cisco 2950-EI switches and have employed QoS on the switches and router. Still sounds terrible. What we are now finding is that the network card in the PC may be the key to the problem. A Dell Optiplex P4 2.4GHz 512MB

Can Asterisk "proxy" a SIP phone to make it look like a Cisco skinny softphone?
Hi there We have a Cisco VOIP environment here, with hard and softphones. I have a softphone account/etc, but I'm a Linux user and (as far as I'm aware) there is no Cisco softphone for Linux. However I can run Asterisk. So I was wondering if there is a way to "convert" a SIP phone transaction into a SKINNY transaction so that the Cisco environment thinks it is a Cisco

Softphone recommendation
Hi Folks, Had a quick search through the archives for softphones and cannot see any recommended ones. My question is what recommended free softphones are out there that can be used with Asterix? I don't really know how many are out there. Is anyone currently using a softphone with Asterix and if so which one and how do you find it? I'm only interested in ones that I can download and use

Best USB Handset and Softphone Combination
I have a client that want to try the softphone with USB handsets route to see if hardphones will even be needed. I always push for hardphones (Polycom) so I am not sure about softphones or USB handsets. This is going to be for a 300+ seat call center onsite and many offsite, I plan on using OpenVPN for the offsite machines. Any advice on softphones, handsets, or practical experience with

error when trying to copy file from samba share to old Windows CE share
If I open the file with notepad++, make an edit and save it, then it will copy successfully. If I open it with regular Notepad, and edit/save the file, it still fails. Changing the filename/extension did nothing. Is there a way on windows to view extra attributes or something?
