Up2date confusion
Hi, I installed 3.1 from CD and ran up2date without changing /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-source. Checking some of the files it appears I have all the updates including the updates from the last few weeks. However up2date for some reason shows that I still need to update and lists old and current files in the list of available updates. Any idea why this is so and how to fix it?

Apt repositories for CentOS?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Greetings again folks, One of the things I like about Fedora Core is the fact that I can add apt as a repository tool. Has anyone done this for CentOS-3? Why was yum chosen? I prefer apt over yum because of features and was wondering if anyone had created an apt repository for CentOS. Thanks in advance for the info, I'm not trying to start an

URL for downloads by apt on Fedora Core2
Hi. I see the URL for downloading wine with apt for my Debian installs, but is there one I can use with apt for downloading wine to my Fedora installs. I've tried a few options, but keep getting 404's. The last one I tried was. rpm http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ fedora/2/i386 binary This is sort of following the layout of other URL's I've got in /etc/apt/sources.list, for

CentOS-4 RC1 (i386) Bugfixes
All, There are 3 bugfix updates for CentOS-4 (RC1). 1. mod_perl needed to be recompiled after the RH errata for perl was incorporated, but it was not flagged by the perl update. ( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=803 ) (thanks Joshua Hirsh) 2. httpd identified itself as Apache/2.0.52 (Red Hat) Server instead of CentOS ( https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806 ) (thanks

what the best ? apt-get? yum or urpmi ?
Hello, I must make a choice concerning the use of a tool used to update rpms: yum, urpmi or apt-get. Personally, I use urpmi every day, without real problems (the dependences, even those of Perl are very well managed), the "hdlist" can be used in several forms , it contains a lot of funtions but, it is not integrated into up2date and does not have a graphic interface that fits Centos3

can't "yum install mplayer" : no libmpcdec.so.3 available
Just upgraded to 5.4 yesterday morning. (Kudos to those who did that!) That's probably irrelevant to this problem: "yum install mplayer" fails. Here's what happens: ================================================== # yum install mplayer Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, filter-data, kernel-module, keys, kmod, list- : data, merge-conf, security, upgrade-helper,

Messing around with iptables
Hello all, I am messing around with iptables, trying to learn how it works so that I can build my self a router/firewall and mabey a VPN. Anyway I tried to use a command on my Desktop CentOS3 machine. "iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p icmp -j DROP" now the command seems to have went through because I didn't get any errors, but when I go to ping 127.0.0.1 I am getting a response

PXEboot works but running into a wall at "login"
This is slightly off topic since I am all the way upto the login prompt, but I appeal to you all because you probably have experience in this: I am passing a diskless workstation a compressed root filesystem that is copied from a server (chopped down). I am only intereted in text consoles being available on the client (runlevel 3). The diskless workstation goes well up to the login: RedHat

[LLVMdev] Error: Program contains no debugging information!
Hi, I have a question about using lldm-db. I compiled a simple program using "llvmgcc -g" and loaded the resulting .bc file into llvm-db, but when I tried to set a breakpoint by "b main", it complained "Error: Program contains no debugging information!". Is there anything obvious that I did wrong here? What do I need to do to produce debugging info in the .bc file so

SSH scanning attempt vias "guest" and "admin" accounts
There has been some discussion on the gentoo security list of late about a new attempt to find ssh vulnerabilities. No one has reported a successfull break in as far as I know, but I though the cross post couldn't hurt. Dan Margolis (krispykringle at gentoo.org) has put together some notes about it. http://dev.gentoo.org/~krispykringle/sshnotes.txt Regards, Jake ===== Jacob Hawkes, B.

cannot add domain user to directory security on 3.0.6 from Windows Explorer
Hi, I'm trying to run samba 3.0.6 with --with-acl-support on redhat 9.0 with kernel 2.4.25 patched with acl, joined to a ADS w2k environment. Everything is OK, except that I can't add any user to a directory security on a share, with error "unable to save permission changes on folder EmirF_create_tis_fldr. Access is denied". Even as user "EmirF" from windows explorer,
