I agree, use either SCSI with hardware raid with a battery backed cache or use sata/ide with linux software raid. Linux raid SCSI also works well, but if you go for the scsi drives might as well get the controller too. I've tried to modify the Makefiles in the debian source package, i don't get any error, but still the ztdummy module doesn't get compiled.
