Configure a local DNS caching nameserver: partial success
Hi,
The subject says it all. On my "server" machine in the local LAN
(192.168.1.252 in a 192.168.1.0/24 network), I setup Bind. I installed
the 'caching-nameserver' package, which provides a set of configuration
files for Bind so it can be used as a caching nameserver out of the box.
On the server :
I start bind (service named start), and try it out.

Re: CentOS 3.4 Single CD "Server" version
Hey,
Lance mentioned yum group install. This yum group
capability makes the "server" CD's more versatile than
the name implies -- you only need a broadband
connection to get any kind of CentOS install you want.
Start with a minimal install off the CD, and then use
the yum group install to conveniently get the same
install you could get off the 3 CD set (only more up
to date).

[story] Thank goodness for links and caching DNS
Right in the middle of doing something important on my Ubuntu box, the
web quit working. However, I could get to sites in my /etc/hosts file.
Sure enough, all three of my ISPs nameservers were down.
I'm not a DNS guy, but on my CentOS boxes I always installed a caching
DNS out of the box since it was part of the obvious install options. So
I set the DNS to one in my Ubuntu box, and of

alternative nameserver from local network
hi,
I have a debian system with shorewall acting as a router between my adsl
line and my local network. One of the things on that local network is my
playstation, and I''m having trouble playing an online game with it - the
game tries to access the internet, and then fails at the stage where it
tries to find the game servers.
The debian machine is 192.168.0.3, and the playstation is

Secondary Nameserver not working
I've configured a secondary slave nameserver based on what I consider rather expert advice, but
it's not working as expected. I'm trying to determine if I've done something wrong with basic
configuration or if there are AD/DC nuances afoot.
The main nameserver is the domain Active Directory/Domain Controller running Samba 4.4.16 on
Slackware64 14.2. This has been running for a few

CentOS 3.4 - i386 - errata - initscripts
There is an update to initscripts for CentOS 3.4.
The version packaged in the 3.4 isos missed the patch to remove the 10

This update reimplements the patch.

how do I find out which nameserver returns a DNS query?
Hi all
If I do a "dig mydomain.co.za" from a Linux server, how do I know which
DNS nameserver returns the queries?
I seem to have a faulty DNS server, but can't see which one, so I want
to find out which nameserver (if there's 4 - ns1.myserver, ns2.myserver,
ns3.myserver & ns4.myserver) returns the queries?

want to do when you send the command "ping domain.com" even if you are
disconnected to the internet it will still resolve the ip of
