state plugin
hi,
I saw that Mike Dransfield tried to port 'state' plugin from beryl.
What does it do? It should be able to place windows, based on name,
class etc., to specific viewports. I recently converted to compiz window
manager from WindowMaker (used it for 8 years), and I miss automatic
'pinning' of specific windows to particular workspace (or viewport in
this case).

Dynamic server address
Hi!
My mail server (ubuntu breezey badger) is connected by ADSL and has a
dynamic address. I have noticed that, every day after the IP address
changes, dovecot is no longer reachable from the net. Iguess this is because
dovecot doesn't register this change and continues to listen on a
non-existing interface/address.
I'm trying to solve this problem by putting a script in /etc/ppp/ip-up/

Couldn't activate plugin 'rotate'
First, I would like to compliment you all for a great work you put in
developing compiz. I have it running for more that a month and it did
not crash. Stability is very good. Great work!
Today I updated compiz from git tree and found that rotate generates
this error:
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'rotate'
Rotate does not function. Any ideas ?

how to divide a string into characters? - for comparing strings that is
Hi
I am searching for a way to do something like "ABC" -> c("A","B","C"). How can this be accomplished?
I tried cut() and split(), but they do something else, it seems.
The purpose for doing this is to find the number of common (and uncommon) characters, i.e. ultimately I want something like this:
> foo("ABD","ADE")
c(2,1) # 2

does this sound like any kind of R procedure to you?
I apologize that this is not precisely about R, but it does fall into
the "what would an R user do?" category of questions.
My colleague came to me and said "I have data on 20 countries, 4
elections in each one. I have measures for each election on a number of
things, and I want to know if the change from one election to the next
follows a pattern. For example, is the measure

Commercial license?
Hi there
Is there a commercial license for using Rsync or the Rsync algorithm
within a commercial product? I appreciate that Rsync as it stands is GNU
and therefore it cannot be used in this way, but I thought that I would
ask the list. I understand that it is open source, but we have an
application that would benefit from something like Rsync and therefore
thought we would ask the question. If

Dovecot 1.2, problem with SQL quota and mail aliases
Hello,
I have a small server running dovecot 1.2 (still not balsy enough to
switch to 2.0 - virtual sql accounts, managesieve etc.). There are no
local users - only ones defined in the SQL database, and everything else
(including quota) is defined in SQL db too. Dovecot is used as IMAP
daemon, and dovecot-lda is responsible for delivery (in order to make use
of sieve and managesieve). I know

[OT] IAX2 WiFi phone?
Does such a beastie exist?
I've tried a couple of UT Starcom WiFi SIP phones (the F1000g and F3000
respectively), and found them both to be seriously lacking - regular crashes
(especially the F3000), poor battery life, and poor reception in particular.
However, whilst SIP phones are great, I'd really like an IAX2 phone if there
is one, as I can make that work "natively" though

iptables mangle table PREROUTING rule with -o flag
Greetings all,
I realize from the subject line this makes little sense but here''s the
scenario:
I''m trying to shape (via priority - not bandwidth) peer to peer traffic
from a number of clients. Currently I use an IMQ device to bring all
their outbound (inbound to me - outbound to Inet) traffic together to work
with policies all at the same time. I''m testing the

extremely slow delete/move operations?
I've been working to migrate several hundered users on to our new mail
servers, which run dovecot 0.99.11 (RHEL4). The problem I'm seeing is that
deleting or moving a message seems to take a very long time. It's not
uncommon for Thundirbird (1.0.7) to have delays of 5-10 seconds to delete a
single message from my Inbox (<500k) and place it in my Trash folder (~100MB

config question for proxyarp hosts?
I''ve got a serious mess of NAT on our firewall/router systems at the
corporate office which seems to do nothing other than confuse the heck
out of people. What I''d like to do is gradually migrate the hosts on
the various DMZ networks away from private IP addresses and NAT over to
public IP addresses and proxyarp.
What I''m wondering, before I start this, is how do I
