Q: No Reiserfs in Kernel
Hello, I have a quick question. I am currious why reiserfs isn't compiled into the kernel? Although RHEL doesn't include the tools to manage reiserfs it includes the kernel drivers. Thanks, Bill

CentOS newbie just saying hello
Hi folks, Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked this out completely. How to map ata#.# numbers to /dev/sd numbers?
On my C5 machine (a Dell XPS420) I have a 500Gb disk on the internal SATA controller. I also have a SiI3132 dual-port multi-device eSATA card. This is connected to an external SATA array of disks. Now occasionally I see something like this in my logs ata7.01: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 a ction 0x0 ata7.01: irq_stat 0x00060002, device error via D 2H FIS ata7.01: cmd

Hot swap SATA?
Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

A 'simple' problem?
Here's one for you if you have the time: I very stupidly killed the wrong process on a server on a remote site on Friday and now I cannot ssh login to it! It's not a major problem as it's main functions are as a file and print sharer (samba) and to run postfix/mailscanner, and I can have someone on site reboot the server when they start work on Monday, but I was wondering whether I

External SATA enclosures: SiI3124 and CentOS 5?
Tired of "little problems" trying to keep 7 drives working in an old desktop computer, I'm considering an external SATA drive enclosure with a controller card based on the Sil3124. http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=152 I'm a bit concerned about long-term support, namely that the company's driver page only lists drivers through RedHat 4.

Samba print queues showing old jobs
We have a server running Centos-3 with all latest updates. The server hosts 3 printers for us which are accessed by various Windows clients. About 3 months ago we noticed that, after a cups update, if you looked at the print queues in Windows they would show old jobs that had long been printed. After a further cups update this quirk went away but it's just come backs again - possibly after

Virtualisation of Netware?
Hi, I am hoping someone can kick me up the learning curve (!) on Virtualization: We have an old piece of data logging software that was written in Turbo Pascal 6 using a file I/O module tuned to Netware and so it expects its data files to be on a Netware server and will not access them locally or via an MS/Samba share - essentially, it uses direct NCP calls for parts of its data access. Key mishmash
Hi, copy your key from /etc/rndc.conf to /var/named/chroot/etc/rndc.key if you are unable to contact your bind (DNS) server after the last update. For more info, see: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=203070#c4 Secret must be the same or chrooted bind is unable to talk to rndc (ie: '/etc/init.d/named status' for example). -- Milan Kerslager

"dumb" SATA controller recommendation
Just wondering if any 4.2 users out there have a favourite "dumb" PCI controller to add a couple of SATA ports to a motherboard that doesn't include SATA support. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just 2 SATA ports that a recent vintage kernel will recognize without a lot of configuration gymnastics. The intended use is for relatively light weight internet browser

APM on SMP kernel
I'm Currently running Centos 3.4 on an old Dell PowerEdge with dual PIII-450 processors. I know from searching that 'APM is not SMP safe' and so when I choose to reboot the server someone has to hit the power button to power down and then restart it. Most of the Web-based info I have found on APM and SMP is dated 2000-2002 so can anyone update me on whether there is now any way
