Systems Admin; Telecom Newbie - What do I ne ed?
>But currently, I only have one ethernet jack per office. Routing >another 60 or so ports would add a very substantial expense in both >cabling and backbone expansion (what category ethernet is required, >BTW?). Most decent phones have an ethernet passthrough (2 port) so you can plug in your PC. As long as your LAN is decent (Cat5 100baseT switched) the overhead using VoIP is

SoftPhones: Bad, or just bad QoS?
Hi again, folks. I've been getting feedback from this list and elsewhere that softphones are generally not considered good enough for hardcore business use. Can someone point me to where I can find more detail on this debate? Is the problem that the technology isn't mature, that the load on the computer is too high, or simply that it doesn't work well in a poorly designed

T1 Timing Troubleshooting
I'm having (I think) timing issues in relation to bridged T1-T1 calls via dynamic spans. Fax calls are intermittently working, but voice is fine. My box has a Sangoma A400 inside it as the primary Zaptel timing source. My T1 PRIs that are hooked to the box come in via a foneBRIDGE2 (dynamic TDMoE spans). PRI #1 is the telco and PRI #2 is an existing Comdial FX-II. For some reason, bridged TDM

In the beginning-The first question.
List, Im a Cisco certified Network guy with little telecom experience (BRI/PRI at the time) so please forgive my terminology. I am showing interest after the Network World SHSU October 4 article. We have 3 offices (Hub-Spoke T1 Frame relay to the remote offices(Data & voice on separate T)). Each office currently does their own thing for telecom. Our Main(HUB) office currently has 14 channels

Newbie Questions
I've been doing a lot of reading over the last few weeks on Asterisk, and will be implementing a test system this week to play with. I've got two questions in regards to the ideal implementation for our company. First, has anyone written any drivers to interface with proprietary phones? Specifically we have a comdial system and if we could use our existing 35 phones instead of having to

Choosing an ISP for Asterisk
I am the IT Manager for an international company who preserves its competitive edge by cutting costs. We are moving to a new office in about two months, and naturally, Asterisk came to mind as a way to implement a VoIP setup at low cost. My expertise is computers, not telephones, so all of this is new to me. I need to know what the ideal setup for an Asterisk set up is. My idea is to have our

Digium T100P T1 Card
Hello All, I could use a recommendation if anyone has a moment. I have the T100P but I have not gotten my service yet. I want to have at least 12 lines of digital voice with DID. Should I just seek out a PRI ISDN provider or is there something else I should look for? I want to keep cost as low as possible. Also, I want to own my own router for the phones since it is always a hassle to get

Do Both! :) Re: Telecom SIP termination vs. DS3
Message: 16 Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 00:16:34 -0600 Michael, Do both! As for Sip Termination: ----------------------- Contact Kristi Eggers @ Txlink.net for month to month Originating/Termination VoIP Toll Free or Local USA DID #s. Yes they do both Sip and IAX. You must have seperate accounts for either Sip or IAX and fund your account with a minimum of $100. This is what I did. Once I get

SIP hardware phones
I'm trying to understand why vendors keep making 100Mbps integrated 1-port switches in their hardware SIP phones. Even the recently-announced D40 and D50 Digium phones are limited to 100Mbps. Only the more expensive models (like the D70) can run at 1000Mbps. However, you can't expect a firm with hundreds of extensions to buy the most expensive model... And gigabit speed is important when

Quad T1 Card
Ok... I am reluctant to ask this question as I believe that it may be like asking what someones favorite linux distribution is... but I need to make an informed decision. We are getting ready to upgrade from a TE210P to a quad T1 card with echo cancellation. I am trying to decide between the Sangoma card and the Digium card. I need this to have great quality and I need it to work well. I would

Question on echo's for Canadian Asterisk users ...
Has anyone has issues with echo using a Wildcard with a PRI from a major Canadian Telco? (Bell, Telus, AllStream, Sprint, Group Telecom). We are using a T1 from GT that is giving use annoying echos whenever a SIP/IAX2 client calls a local analog line. Calling cells phones is no issue since its digital. Regardless, there should be no issue with echo on a PRI at all. NOC at GT is telling us

IP PAX gateway to PSTN
Hi, If I setup an IP PAX gateway to handle VoIP calls to a traditional phone line, I am wondering how each VoIP call to the PSTN connection get charged by a local Telecom. Thanks Sam

Is Gigabit Ethernet necessary?
For an office that is using VoIP phones to connect to Asterisk, is gigabit ethernet really necessary for the Asterisk box to connect to the switch? I know that I won't even approach the limits of 100 Mbps, but would gigabit help with latency / collisions when several calls are underway? The fact is, anything going outside the office will be over a data T1, so intuition tells me that 100

Minimum budget question ...
I've tried to figure out from the web site the minimum hardware cost to run a small office Asterix solution but I'm afraid I miss something: Let's say that I want to connect four/five analogic extension to the PBX. I have: - 1 computer as the server (with linux and Asterisk on it) - 1 dummy patch panel to connect all the analogic phones around the office What (and how many) cards

FXS or VOIP
Hi I am setting up a phone system for a small office. The office will have 5-8 phones and a fax line. There are 4 hunt lines coming into the office. We have made no hardware purchase yet. Being an asterisk newbie, before I suscribed to this list I just assumed that I would buy voip phones and connect all the phones to a private ethernet network. However, I see many people inquiring about FXS

* point to point t1 solution?
Can anyone point me to a reference or sample config for bypassing a nailed up (point to point) t1 between two PBXs with asterisk and a pair of t1 cards? Right now I have 2 Nortel norstars connected to each other via a leased line t1. I also have a solid 10mbps low latency microwave link between the 2 sites. My goal is to run an asterisk box at each end with a t1 card and Ethernet card to

Good comparisons on cheaper VOIP phones
Hello list, I am doing some work for a non profit group. As part of this, I am going to be putting in a 30 handset Asterisk solution. We are trying to keep the costs down as much as possible, as this job includes cabling, I am looking at POE solutions. On the switch side, I am considering something like some Netgear ProSafe FS726TP 24 port switches, or maybe the equivalent Linksys SRW224MP 24

OT: DS3 -> VoIP Hardware Recommendations
Hello all, We are looking for some hardware requirements/recommendations to be able to handle a full DS3's worth of TDM -> VoIP traffic. The DS3 would bring 24 calls per T1 x 28 T1s = 672 simultaneous calls. We would then need to convert those calls into G729 SIP VoIP calls to send to our asterisk box over ethernet. Since everything is going in/out of asterisk is 729, and no features

Stumped on LD questions......
OK.. I'm up to my eyes in LD BS! I can't for the life of me understand how any carrier, either VoIP or traditional service provider can make heads or tails of how to hand off an * based call to an LD provider. Every provider I talk to, says I have to have a traditional T1 put in to their respective networks. I don't want to do this. I want a LD provider that can take a IP, SIP, IAX
