CentOS and Red Hat SATA drivers
Hi there --
I was going to experiment with a CentOS x86_64 install in the following manner:
One of our new dual-xeon servers is using an Adaptec SATA controller card that
has drivers available for Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 and Enterprise Linux 3.0.
I was going to create the drivers for one or the other and then attempt an
install via the linux dd command. My question is, would either of these

I'm looking for any easy way to make gnome a little more like KDE so my
KDE apps look nice under gnome. I also want some extra gnome themes.
Does anyone have any links on how-tos, or any ideas on where to start?

kernel recompile help
Everytime I try to recompile a kernel, "make modules" always dies with
the error:
mv: cannot stat `include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h.tmp': No such file or
directory
make: *** [include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h] Error 1
I installed the src RPM and kernel-devel ... any ideas as to what I
could be doing wrong?
Thanks!!

dumb, dumb question
I''m very new to shorewall. My setup is IP Gateway (CentOS 4 + Shorewall)
with 3 NIC cards.
Shorewall works great on the firewall machine. Bind also works (local
net machines get IPs fine). Under firestarter, all works great.
With shorewall, the loc machines can not route past the firewall. They
can connect to the firewall, but not past it.
Exactly what information should I post to get

mirrors for CentOS-4.0 Beta?
Quick question. Does anybody know of any mirrors for CentOS-4.0 Beta?
I would like to give it a spin, but before I download the iso's from
c4beta.caosity.org, I thought I'd check.
Thanks,
Ryan

So the heap is set with data provided by the (local) attacker who could
initialize it to his liking using either of the two memory leaks in the

SYSLINUX bootsplash
Hello all,
Forgive me if this has been asked before, I've been googling for two
days now and the only thing that I've learned is that bootsplash is a
total black art.
I'm booting off of a USB stick and I've finally gotten a splash screen
to appear before vmlinuz and initrd load, but once they load the splash
screen scrolls off the screen. Is there any way to make it behave and

bootsplash in initramfs and isolinux
Howdy,
I use isolinux very successfully to boot a CD on which I have a kernel
with an initramfs compiled in that holds the bootsplash as well as an
external initrd with a boot script. the CD boots fine and everything
works the way it should.
My problem is actually when I try to boot the same kernel and initrd
from the HD of a machine (easy way to boot the CD without altering the
BIOS). For

SSH + VNC
I am trying to log into a desktop that is running CentOS 4.2 by
tennelling VNC through SSH..
The desktop auto-logins a user, then sits there waiting for me to login.
On the client side, I fire up SSH tunneling
ssh -L 8000:127.0.0.1:5900
The client spits back the error
vncviewer: ConnectToTcpAddr: connect: Connection refused
Unable to connect to VNC server
The server says

bootsplash: splash=silent always boots as splash=verbose
Hi there,
I am trying to migrate from using syslinux with the gfxboot patch to using vesamenu.c32 which is a much simpler solution for my needs. The only problem I am having is that when I attempt to use the "splash=silent" kernel parameter it always boots as though I had entered "splash=verbose". By which I mean that the vga mode is correct, and the verbose graphics are

gnome 2.12 via yum?
Hello,
I was asked a question regarding centos that i do not know the answer. I
don't use gnome or x on any box i deploy for production use so haven't
checked in to this. CentOS4 comes with gnome 2.8 from what i was told, the
question is is it possible to do an update rpmwise to gnome 2.12 via yum? If
so, what repositories do i need to enable to pull this off and what if any
