Samba print queues showing old jobs
We have a server running Centos-3 with all latest updates. The server
hosts 3 printers for us which are accessed by various Windows clients.
About 3 months ago we noticed that, after a cups update, if you looked
at the print queues in Windows they would show old jobs that had long
been printed. After a further cups update this quirk went away but it's
just come backs again - possibly after

CentOS newbie just saying hello
Hi folks,
Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer
Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB
unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if
I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I
think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked
this out completely.

Problem with Syslinux 2.07 and APM on SMP system
Hi,
We have a problem with Syslinux 2.07 and APM on an SMP system.
When either network booting with pxelinux.0 or CDROM booting
with isolinux we get a kernel error message:

Cannot re-make a software raid pair
Apologies if you get this twice - the first one didn't seem to make it...
Hi Guys,
I have just replaced a faulty Max...woah, wait...this one's a Seagate... IDE
hard disk but I cannot remake the software raid pair.
The currently running disk is hda and I am trying to add back hdg - both are
master drives on separate controllers.
I have run fdisk on hdg and created the same partition

CentOS 5 for IA64
Can anyone with a well-connected crystal ball suggest a timeframe for an
IA64 release of CentOS 5? Weeks? Months? Never?
Thanks

A 'simple' problem?
Here's one for you if you have the time:
I very stupidly killed the wrong process on a server on a remote site on
Friday and now I cannot ssh login to it! It's not a major problem as it's
main functions are as a file and print sharer (samba) and to run
postfix/mailscanner, and I can have someone on site reboot the server when
they start work on Monday, but I was wondering whether I

Chrooting SFTP over SSH2
Hi,
As per the subject line - if I look up setting up chroot jails for SFTP over
SSH2 I'm led to various Web sites and patches and also to a CentOS wiki page
dated 2005, but what's the 'best' or 'correct' way to set this up for Centos
4.5 and 5?
Thanks

Virtualisation of Netware?
Hi,
I am hoping someone can kick me up the learning curve (!) on Virtualization:
We have an old piece of data logging software that was written in Turbo
Pascal 6 using a file I/O module tuned to Netware and so it expects its data
files to be on a Netware server and will not access them locally or via an
MS/Samba share - essentially, it uses direct NCP calls for parts of its data
access.

Cups updates - overwriting mime.* files
Every time cups is updated I have to check mime.convs and mime.types to
ensure that references to handling raw file types are uncommented otherwise
we notice that one of our printers stops working because the files are
overwritten by the updates. Should config files not be left untouched?
We do have 'print command = lpr -r -oraw -P %p %s' in smb.conf but this on
its own didn't make

Mounting Floppies
Hi - daft one for Friday morning coffee break:
I have been trying to mount floppies on a couple of CentOS5 servers - the
usual "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" (yes, /mnt/floppy exists!).
On both servers, the mount command just doesn't come back and I have to hit
CTRL-C. I have tried different media and also changed the floppy drive on
one server, /dev/fd0 is seen as present on both

A couple of questions for the Mitel gurus (phone-related - not systems)
Hi Folks,
Just in case there are any Mitel gurus here:
1) Is it possible to convince a non-dual mode 5220 phone to 'upgrade' to the
SIP firmware? I have inherited one that's Minet only.
2) I have a 5310 conference unit and 5235 phone in SIP mode, but someone's
lost the connecting lead. Can anyone recommend anywhere in the UK for a
replacement lead or confirm the pin-out so I can

Copying user accounts (passwords) to another server
Hi Folks,
I am doing a server swap out tomorrow and wondered if there was a utility
that will copy user account details and their current passwords from one
server to another (both CentOS 4) - there's only about 15 to do so it's not
a major issue.
Thanks

Apcupsd UPS monitoring
Having some fun with the APC monitoring daemon (apcupsd) - I've
installed the Whitebox rpm and it runs OK but I cannot communicate with
the UPS on ttyS0 or ttyS1. I'm using a supported cable (according to the
utility's Web site).
I've followed the troubleshooting tips on the app's Web site with no
luck - the only bit that I can't resolve is it recommends disabling
logins

mdbtools on CentOS
Morning everyone,
I was hoping to use mdbtools to extract data from some Access databases
overnight. I have yum installed the tools from Dag and also downloaded and
(eventually!) compiled the latest release from the mdbtools web site, but I
either get 'buffer overflow' errors or no output from most of the tools. I
have been trying to cvs checkout the latest development version but

Netware server emulation on Linux
One of our group companies has just 'gone live' on a new laboratory
management package. Although the software is M$-based (ie: expects a M$
server at the heart of it), it is running with its core database on a
CentOS3 server using Samba for client access - in fact, the developers are
amazed at the performance and say it beats a Win2K/2K3 server 'hands
down'!!!
Anyway, the old lab

Disk problem has stopped 'df' from working
Hi folks, probably not CentOS specific but any help appreciated:
One of our CentOS4 servers crashed and when checked there was a disk problem
which turned out to be a faulty SATA cable on one of the RAID 1 drives. This
was sorted and the server brought back up after the usual disk checks and
all has been well for the last week. Today, however, I tried 'df -h' and
got:

APM and suspend to swap
I have been delving into how to get this HP NC4010 to suspend. I think
the practice of just closing the unit for 15+ min inside my backpack as
I move to the next meeting is what cooked my drive...
So it seems that Debian users have been successful with APM:
http://www.proulx.com/~bob/nc4000/ and http://www.gag.com/~bdale/nc4000/
So my Centos related questions are:

SATA - SIL3112A controller
Hi folks,
I have just installed a PCI SATA controller based on the SIL3112A
chipset into my Centos-3 (latest kernel patches applied) system and
moved an existing (not the boot disk) SATA drive from the onboard
controller to the SIL-based one so I can setup software RAID with two
300GB drives. Kudzu/Linux found the controller and drives straight away
and they've appeared as 'hda' and

com16/com32 module for APM powerdown
Hello,
In case anyone is interested, here are the source code for comboot and
com32 modules for powering down a computer using APM.
I started work on the ACPI version of it, but it will take some time to
parse the spec.
Regards,
Luciano Rocha

[PATCH 14/21] i386 Apm is on cpu zero only
APM BIOS code has a protective wrapper that runs it only on CPU zero. Thus,
no need to set APM BIOS segments in the GDT for other CPUs.
