How "expensive" are the different codecs? (Regarding CPU time)
Hi! The encoding, decoding and recoding cost cpu time, that's sure. But does this time differs much depending on the used codec? Is - for example - a G729 faster than a GSM codec? Bye! Michael

Which modem is known to work with asterisk?
Hi! I want to connect my asterisk system to the PSTN. Now I'm thinking about using an analog modem as FXO device. Which modems do run? How is the voice quality? (I looked into the wiki, but on <http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk%20hardware> no regular modems were mentioned. Or should I use a special FXO-card? I don't want to spend 99$ for such a thing but

Question concerning creating .exe shorcuts.
Hey guys, I was curious about something. When Wine installs a program, that creates a shortcut after installation, it is usually placed on the desktop (as it would in Windows). So how I can create the same type of shortcut which will use the .exe's inbuilt icon; as Wine does? I know how to create a shortcut but i'd manually need to search for a .png file to use as that shortcuts icon.

Resolving QOS problems
I'm looking for advise on troubleshooting QOS problems. After much searching and reading online (Google, Voip-Info Wiki, etc.) I don't feel any closer to finding the right tools to solve my problem. Any info you would like to share would be much appreciated, and I'm sure the thread will server others in the future. The problem : ------------- I'm having intermittent problems

Use l7-filter in/and TCNG.
Hello every one! I''m making a project to a discipline in the university and the project is make a Linux router that grants QoS to Multimedia connections (the prof. say we can use Open Source Soft. :) or reinvent the wheel). I have been googeling and googeling and i found the l7-filter in source forge and the spectacular simple language that is TCNG. Well the problem is how can i

VoIP QoS monitoring and failover re-routing
Hi, I am looking at a project which requires VoIP QoS monitoring and failover re-routing to PSTN, without dropping the call ideally. While I have hardware solutions available such as the Quintum Tenor series, I see no reason why Asterisk can't have this feature with some effort obviously. Plus I note it is on the wish list at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+Wishlist (last item

jdg-qos & DSL
hi all! i have a dsl connection with 1280 kbps for downstream and 256 kbps for upstream, and i want to manage the bandwidth to give high priority to voip traffic and low priority to p2p traffic. i found the script jdg-qos. i readed on this forum (i have a dsl-g604t router with MCMCC firmware) http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16250220 that the two parameters of the jdg-qos script (DWIFLIMIT

looking for input on broadband router with QoS and VPN support
Hi, We're installing an * box next week (pbxtra from fonality) and I'm trying to come up with a solution for remote users that want a phone in their home. I need VPN and QoS capability, wireless support would be a nice to have. Ethernet handoff is fine, i don't need integrated dsl or cable modem... I've been googling and cruising the list and can find bits and pieces

GXP-2000 Audio Quality
I have a client with about 16 GXP-2000. They complain that the audio quality is terrible after 2 or 3 simultaneous conversations. They are behind DSL 1.5Mbps down and 256Kbps up. Because they are using G711.u codec, I know they upstream bandwidth is the limiting factor and they most likely won't be able to have more than 3 simultaneous conversations, and if they're surfing the

Bandwith especification.
Hi, If I have a DSL router with 300kpbs upload bandwith: Linux(eth0) ---(100Mbps)---> DSL ---(300kbps)---> INTERNET Which is the recomended value I must set in my QoS setup for the maximum outbound bandwith of my ethernet interface ? The max of 300kbps or something less like 290kbps ? Especify less than the maximum available bandwith is advisable to ensure that the QoS algoritms goes

Nearing my wits end....bad switch???
Grasping at straws here...is anyone using a Dell PowerConnect 2224 24-port unmanaged 10/100 switch in a deployment? I have two separate asterisk installations with bad one-way audio where the only common elements left are the Dell switches and Polycom IP-500 phones. Two different ITSPs - one location uses IAX2 to the outside world, the other SIP. Two different bandwidth providers, one SDSL 1.5

QoS and IPSec...
Hi, I have what to me is an interesting issue. I am wanting to prioritize (QoS) traffic that will be passing through an IPSec (OpenS/WAN) VPN between two (identical) Linux routers. I know that I can apply the IPSec patches (1-4) to the kernel and IPTables (if they are not already applied by now) filter traffic before and after IPSec encapsulation. My problem is that I don''t know

How Do I ...
All, I've got a machine running CentOS 5.3 and this machine has got 2 - built-in 1 Gig NICs and a expansion card with 4 - 100 Meg NICs. For whatever reason at install time, it made the expansion card eth0 through eth3 and the internal ports eth4 and eth5. And by default the 'machine' is known on the network by the eth0 NIC, so my throughput is limited to 100 Mb. How can I force

Call routing based on remote ip address.
While setting up my first dial plan, I find that notions like remote ip, network, or incoming network interface seem to be totally lacking regarding calling parties, where * still seems to fully rely on the easily spoofable caller id. Especially, allowing only certain ips or networks to enter a specific context in the dial plan is apparently not possible, at least in the h323 world. Don't
