After looking on ALSA's web site, I believed that ALSA had good support for the CA0106 chipset used in such cards as the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit. I had all kinds of problems with it and finally was reading the driver source code and realized that it is documented to not work with lower sample rates and other things that Asterisk requires of a sound card for the console ALSA channel.

If your vmail is connected via serial to your PBX it is most likely using SMDI for MWI which isn't supported by Asterisk.
