disabling prelink?
What are the pros and cons of disabling prelinking in CentOS 4? From what I understand, prelinking is ment to be performance improvement (faster loading time for binaries). I can see some potential benefit on workstations where many different processes are started frequently. But how big is that benefit in real life? Would I slow down things noticably if there is no prelinking? Is

Tripwire for CentOS
Hi, I literally have about 36 machines running CentOS on a private network, and will probably change the remaining 30 or so away from Whitebox or RH in the near term. One thing I just noticed was when I tried to search out Tripwire RPM's, that none seemed evident. Can anyone point me in the direction of an Tripwire RPM that works with CentOS 4.3, or advise me on how to create one from the

CentOS 4.1
Question about differences in RHEL 4.1 and CentOS 4.1 organization. Does CentOS follows same organization as RHEL? I don't see separate directory for 4.1 on Red Hat's ftp server (well, the public part of it, with SRPM packages), seems like all the updates were simply dumped into the 4.0 updates area, so basically doing normal system upgrade will bump all RHEL 4.0 systems to 4.1. On the

rkhunter and prelink
Can't remember if I posted this before... We're getting warnings from rkhunterWarning: Checking for prerequisites [ Warning ] All file hash checks will be skipped because: This system uses prelinking, but the hash function command does not look like SHA1 or MD5. Now, googling, I find people saying to rm /etc/prelink.cache, then run rkhunter --propupd. Works. And then,

CORRUPTION: /lib/tls corruption with ELF prelinking
The current /lib/tls support in Xen/Linux through rewriting faulting instructions seems to work well, but for one rather nasty issue. If you are running with /lib/tls on a system that also uses prelinking (you can check this by looking for e.g., /etc/cron.daily/prelink) then you''re /lib/tls libraries will get corrupted! The problem is that the prelinking changes cause some of the binary

tripwire alternative
Hello all, Years ago, I used to work with tripwire for system monitoring. Last time I checked with "yum search tripwire", there is no hit. IIRC, it used to be packed by default on older Redhat distros. Any suggestion for an alternative of tripwire for my CentOS 5.6? Check integrity or rootkits on remote server?
Hello, when one has physical access to a computer, he can run something like tripwire, with keys and checksum on a separate, write-only media, to verify the integrity of the system. What if the system is a remote one (in my case Centos 4.3 on a User Mode Linux VPS some hundred of KMs from here)? Does it still make sense to run tripwire remotely? If yes, how, since you cannot plug a floppy or

Several files's checksum change without reason
Hi list, I'm a bit worried here. On a server, Centos 4.3 fully-patched SELinux activated, Osiris (a decentralized scanner for files changes on distant servers) signaled me several changes on files who were not (at first sight) affected by a recent update (the list is below). Is there a logic explanation for those changes to happen ? The "rpm -Va" command does not output md5sum

Prelink failure
I have a number of CentOS6 machines, and on one of them, the daily prelink cron job aborts. Any ideas what to look for? /etc/cron.daily/prelink: /etc/cron.daily/prelink: line 47: 9381 Aborted (core dumped) /usr/sbin/prelink -av $PRELINK_OPTS >> /var/log/prelink/prelink.log 2>&1 I'm unfamiliar with prelink, so I'm not sure what to look for in the logs.

I've been hacked -- what should I do next?
My home system has been hacked. It's running CentOS 4.4, and I recently added an account to play around with Samba shares to back up PCs here at home. I had set a weak password for that account and forgot to disable it after my testing. I could hear the disk being accessed constantly, so I knew something was up. I disabled the port forwarding to my CentOS box on my Linksys router

Aggregating logs from numerous FreeBSD machines
Hi folks, My stack of trusty FreeBSD servers always seems to be growing, and it's getting to the point where the daily and security output mail is too much to make good use of. I'm looking for suggestions for log monitoring and aggregation tools, especially from a monitoring-for-security perspective. If I had to imagine an ideal system, it would be a central server that securely
