Oracle and kernel 2.6 vs 2.4 performance question
All, We're currently running Oracle 9i on a RHEL AS 2.1 installation. We need to upgrade to Oracle 10g, and I've half-way convinced my boss to upgrade to RHEL 4 (we're still discussing AS vs ES, since we're running 2 HT processors...). Anyway, I want to upgrade because of EOL issues whenever RHEL 5 comes out, but before he okays me wiping the server and installing 4, he

To PAE or not to PAE...
Hi, I was wondering if anyone would know the cons of running a PAE kernel...? I have a 4GB pc and was wondering if it was worth going the PAE way to gain those exta 700MB... In the past, I heard that these 700MB were normally reserved for bios or chipset stuff... And that running in PAE would slow down some processes. By the way, I know 64 bits would solve this dilemn but right now I am

RODBC and Oracle
Hi WizaRds, I'm experiencing a problem connecting to an Oracle 10g database via RODBC (I'm getting this on Microsoft XP). The same SQL queries via PL/SQL Developer work just fine, but when I pump the query through sqlQuery in RODBC then I get a data frame back with 0 rows. I cut the query down alternating between PL/SQL and RODBC until I figured that it's some kind of row limit or

AMD64 + Debain + rails + Oracle ?
Hi folks, Does anyone know how to install the OCI8 ruby interface on Debian64 without having to install Oracle? My understanding, from experience with Debian i386, is that you need Oracle (specifically the SQLPlus) installed to be able to compile OCI8. Since my new dev machine is AMD64 running Debian, I''m stuck. My rails applications need to connect to a remote Oracle 10g, but cannot

Implementing R through Oracle
I have been looking for a statistical package that I can implement in our application and I came across R. We run an n-Tier environment with an Oracle 10g backend. Our design is to keep all business logic in the backend. What I would like to do is call R from pl/sql. I noticed that ROracle is designed to connect with and process from a client perspective. I actually would be running in the

Oracle Client for Rails on FC5
It seems to be quite an issue to get an Oracle 10g client running on Fedora 5 (FC5) Linux. Does rails (or active record to be more concise) really need the full (300 MB) Oracle client or is this small easy-to-install Oracle-Instant-Client sufficient? Or is there a pure-Ruby solution that works without any Oracle-client installation? Best regards Karl

Trying to install Oracle 10gR2 client
Well, I have been trying to see if I can get the installer for the Oracle 10gR2 Client to install. (Available from here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10201winsoft.html ) The first problem I encountered was some kind of JRE DirectDraw problem that I can work around with an extra command line parameter (setup -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true). This gets
