Promise TX2 and ATARAID....... kjouirnald and kupdated seem to fight it out for reasourses
What is really puzzling me is that the ataraid device (/dev/ataraid/d0p1 mounted as /bigdisk)
2x 123GB IBM Deskstar's is formated as ext2...top and ps etc... show a fight between kjournald and kupdated
and all searches for kjournald or kupdated fights suggest ext3 issues... :-)
It's a RedHat 7.2, 2.4.7-10 custom kernal (I added in the Promise FastTrak support and HIGH mem support

Promise FastTrak series
Hello,
In some weeks I'm going to reinstall some old RedHat9 based servers with
Promise FastTrak TX2000 "semi-hardware" RAID1 controllers. I just tried to
install CentOS 4.0 on a computer with a spare card and as usual both HDD
attached to the RAID1 controller are seen separately by the installer
because the specific driver for the TX2000 wasn't loaded. Nothing new here,

Hardware RAID Controller
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone had any experience of using the Promise FastTrak SX4000 or
SuperTrak SX6000 IDE RAID Controllers under Centos (if it matters I'm
using version 4). I've seen it listed on linuxcompatible.org as working
but would prefer to find out any first-hand experince before I buy.
I'm looking to build a new mini server based on Mini-ITX and have found

CentOS 6.4 installation fails with message "No usable disks have been found"
Hi folks,
I inherited a very old computer (I guess about 8 years old) which I'd
like to use for some training on CentOS. I downloaded images for CentOS
6.4 i386 (DVD 1 and 2) and burned them onto discs. After inserting DVD 1
into drive and booting, on the "Welcome to CentOS 6.4!" screen I select
"Install or upgrade an existing system". I then skip the media test and

Anyone using National ISDN (NI-1) BRI under Linux?
I have a North American BRI configured as National ISDN (NI-1) on an
SBC (Nortel?) switch. SBC calls this "FastTrak ISDN", and it's
surprisingly inexpensive -- less than two POTS lines.
I've been trying to find an inexpensive PCI interface solution to
connect this to Asterisk as voice lines. I prefer ISDN BRI over POTS
lines because of the improved signalling, fast dialing,

CentOS 5 + Nforce 4 SLI Intel SATA problems
I've been having an extremely hard time using the on board SATA
controller on my nvidia based board. I have two 160gig Maxtor SATA
drives attached to the on board controller, setup as software raid0. The
problem is the array is extremely unreliable, where I'm getting constant
I/O errors like:
sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000
end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector

Symbolic substitution of expressions into expressions
In the following
titletxt <- substitute(paste(tx, tilde(y) == sqrt(y)),
list(tx="Replace y by "))
I'd like to be able to replace e.g. sqrt(y) by a symbol or
symbolic expression that has the effect of inserting sqrt(y)
into the place that it occupies. This would allow me to put an
arbitrary expression into that position. [One can use text() or
mtext() etc. to place titletxt

DMA related disc issues
Howdy. I apologize for vagueness of this report but I am not immediately sure
how to proceed with this or what details will be relevant.
I look after a community server which has been running just fine for the last
6 months or so with no disk issues at all. The box has an all in one Shuttle
motherboard which uses the VIA 8233 ATA133 disk controller according to what
I see from dmesg. The

Can't boot from ad4: Device Not Configured?
I'm trying to move my drives from
the slow built-in IDE controller to
a faster PCI card (Promise ULTRA TX2).
The boot loader succesfully loads the
kernel, and the kernel succesfully probes
the Promise controller and the hard
disk connected to it.
But the root mount fails with error 6,
even after I type in "ufs:/dev/ad4s1a"
I looked through the kernel config files
and LINT and could

Systemfit (was RE: How to force two regression coefficients to be equal but opposite in sign?)
Thank you, Greg, and also to Scott Ellison, who replied privately. I am
in the process of trying out both suggestions.
After I sent my initial message, I came across the Systemfit package,
which allows specification of constraints on parameters. In theory,
this should solve my problem perfectly. However, I was not able to get
it to work with my data, as every attempt yielded the following

Hello
After compiling and booting a RH 8.0 box with a 2.4.19 vanilla kernel
i've started to experience some problems on my /home partition, (i/o
errors on 2 files).
After rebooting the machine failed the to mount /home and dropped me in
the recovery shell.
The fsck is still running after 9 hours.
The system is a dual athlon MP with 1Gb ram and ASUS MB.

Performance Issue: Red Hat vs SuSE
Hi All,
A couple of days ago I posted a query here about the loss of performance on
my backup server after I moved from Red Hat 7.3 to SuSE 8.1.
It appears as though, with no hardware or script changes, that my backup
process takes 4 hours longer with SuSE 8.1.
I'm doing (what I think is) a very simple script that basically employs
SMBMOUNT, CP, and DIFF. Like this:

software vs. hardware with ide Raid 1
What kind of implementation software or hardware is recommended for ide Raid 1 with ext3?
Some controllers from Promise like their new FastTrak TX2000 look nice. But won't I be
tied into the kernel version that is only supported under their drivers? Is ide software Raid
stable and fast with ext3 for a production system?
Thanks in advance.

Raid with one disk?
Is it possible to set up a single disk raid (kind of redundant to call a
single disk an array) but I've got a single SATA drive in the machine
not doing anything. It's a 10k maxtor 74G drive, and what I really want
is just to backup two home partitions. I can always reinstall the OS,
but the data can't be recovered that easily. The mobo supports raid-0,1
and jbod. Suggestions?
