runs.test in by() statement
Hi everybody I am a recent convert from SAS so please excuse me if this is all very obvious: I want to use the runs test {runs.test() in package tseries} to test the randomness of a certain variable in a survey for each interviewer. I tried to us the by() statement but it doesn't seem to work with runs.test() as the function. Here is what I have: Consider a data frame with two variables and

Job market Rails, Java, C++, etc
I have been sending out my resume to whatever Rails jobs I can find. There is a limitied supply unless you want to relocate. It seems like the Rails stuff out there gets alot of applicants, though I am not sure if they tend to be locals, very experienced etc. I have also been applying for C++, Java, and Perl jobs. I have alot of background in C++, but am a little rusty. I have done some Java, but

removing message: [Previously saved workspace restored]
Dear All, I saved by mistake the environment I was working in after typing q(), and now I get the annoying message: [Previously saved workspace restored] I have already deleted all the objects in the environment, saving it as an empty environment, so it's just a matter of nitpicking I suppose. The message does not appear if I start R from any other place in the directory tree. I am

axis and tick widths decoupled (especially in rugs!)
Hi! (a complete newby, but will not give up easily!) I was wondering if there is any way to decouple the axis and tick mark widths? As I understand they are both controlled by the lwd setting, and cannot be controlled independently? For example I might want to create major and minor ticks, which I now know how to do by superimposing two axes with different at settings, but what if I also wanted

analysis of data with observation weights
Dear R-users, Recently I had to analyze a dataset from household survey. The sample design ensured, that each household in the population has the same probability of being sampled. However the data were gathered from only one adult individual in each household, who was randomly choosen by an interviewer (via "Kish grid"). To equalize the probabilities for each INDIVIDUAL a casewise

How to query the package owning the file? (no packahe manger installed)
Guys recently I had this question asked in a technical interview. How do I find out the package owning a particular file, when no package managers are installed? I am assuimg SRPMs are used to install the software? Is this actually possible? Install the Linux OS without a package manager? I know "rpm -qf filename" gives the package owning the file. But how to get the package name

Domain password policy with Samba AD DC
Hi folks, I just wonder why it is not possible to set domain password policies with GPO, using the Windows RSAT Group Policy Manager? For most other settings, using GPOs through RSAT works. For somebody who sets up a Samba AD DC infrequently, this is a huge trap. There should be a very visible warning on the AD DC setup wiki page, that you *must* setup password policies with samba-tool, if

Darcs mirror, some fixes & rake patches...
Hi, as our repository has now been switched to SVN I have stopped my darcs-mirror. Is anyone still interested in the darcs mirror? I would have to set up a new one for the SVN then, since I can''t reuse the history of the CVS import. If no one requires the darcs mirror, I would just trash the darcs repository and reactivate it if need arises. In other news, I have some small fixes for

[RFC] Updating googletest to non-release tagged version
+Chandler who might have some thoughts on this. Could you provide an example here of the motivation for the feature you're missing? Might help motivate the discussion (and/or we'll end up nitpicking how it could be done differently without that feature... - which is sort of where I'm going with this. Combinatorial test case expansion does seem a bit suspicious to me - I'd hope we
